[0] Conan O 'Brien needs a fan.

[1] Want to talk to Conan?

[2] Visit team cocoa .com slash call Conan.

[3] Okay, let's get started.

[4] Hi, Jonah.

[5] Welcome to Conan O 'Brien needs a fan.

[6] Hey, Jonah.

[7] How's it going?

[8] We're doing great.

[9] How are you?

[10] I'm doing well.

[11] I'm doing well.

[12] It's great to finally get to talk with you guys.

[13] Tell me, Jonah, where are you coming from right now?

[14] I'm coming from Tupelo, Mississippi, which is the birthplace of Elvis.

[15] That's right.

[16] Elvis Aaron Presley, born in Tupelo, Mississippi.

[17] That is very cool.

[18] I believe 1935 and his house is still there.

[19] Is that right?

[20] That is right.

[21] He has a whole section dedicated to him kind of in one corner of Tupelo.

[22] But, you know, every corner you turn, there's like Elvis Graffiti.

[23] I mean, he's just ubiquitous.

[24] He's everywhere.

[25] Yeah, yeah.

[26] Well, he is one of the biggest stars of all time.

[27] I keep trying to get my hometown of Brookline, Massachusetts to commemorate something in my honor.

[28] um nothing oh absolutely nothing and i said i'm kind of the elvis of and then i can't even finish the sentence because i i can't think of anything it's just one put a conan sticker and they painted right over it yeah there was a conan statue for eight seconds it was made of butter and a car drove through it smashed it so jonah what do you do what do you do for living yeah so i'm a used car dealer.

[29] The business was passed down to me from my granddad, who pretty much retired out of it in 2020.

[30] And so ever since then, we've renewed everything in my name.

[31] And I've kept it chugging along.

[32] Do you like being a used car dealer?

[33] I do.

[34] I do.

[35] It's rewarding for sure.

[36] And also, I like to be able to just kind of not have a chain of command.

[37] You know, I can kind of just do whatever I'd like to do.

[38] So, especially with just being able to raise my three -year -old.

[39] She comes into work with me. Yeah.

[40] That's so nice.

[41] So you're your own boss.

[42] You sell used cars.

[43] How many used cars do you have right now?

[44] It's a very small lot.

[45] I typically keep five to ten.

[46] I think currently I have seven in inventory and then I have two out in the shop right now getting getting painted so John it let me ask you a question let's say I tomorrow because I could jump on a plane I can get to two below this is a direct flight from Burbank can I and let's say I wandered onto your lot is there a car on your a lot that you would put me in that you think I'd be a good match for um I don't think that I would have anything currently that you would be real interested in but You know, I could put you in one of my cars and we could just kind of tour around the city.

[47] And, you know, I could show you all over to show you all those Elvis faces.

[48] Oh, that's great.

[49] No, I don't think I...

[50] That's cool.

[51] No, first of all, I've owned all kinds of cars.

[52] I had a 73 Plymouth Valiant once.

[53] I had an Asuzu Opel that I bought used at LAX.

[54] I had a Ford Taurus.

[55] I've had many kinds of cars.

[56] I've enjoyed them all.

[57] I'm not a car snob, so I'm, you know, you know, I'm...

[58] You might have a car that I would really like, but I really like the way you just said, hey, you could just hop in the car and we could go for a ride.

[59] You seem like a very nice, chill person.

[60] Do you get that a lot?

[61] Do people tell you that?

[62] Yes, they do.

[63] I usually just try to keep a very calm demeanor in any kind of situation.

[64] Wow, you're like the opposite of me. Yeah, yeah.

[65] It's so cool.

[66] He really is.

[67] Honestly, he really is.

[68] He puts us out of ease.

[69] I found my opposite because you're very relaxed.

[70] and you seem like you take life as it comes.

[71] I've never done that.

[72] I fight every day.

[73] I fight the day from the minute I wake up to the minute I go to sleep.

[74] Just battling it, battling time, battling my own existence.

[75] Sorry.

[76] It's got really intense.

[77] Well, it's funny because a lot of people will say that I'm the opposite of how a typical car sales and would act, you know, a lot of them, you know, they're very direct and they're, you know, they can be kind of pushy almost.

[78] Right.

[79] They can pressure you.

[80] I mean, I asked you outright if I come to Tupelo, what car would I buy?

[81] And you went, oh, I don't know if I have a car for you.

[82] Maybe I'll just drive you around.

[83] Yeah.

[84] You're losing money on the deal.

[85] Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[86] Yeah.

[87] Don't worry.

[88] I'll pay for the gas.

[89] I'll buy you some lunch.

[90] I mean, you do seem like someone who, if I showed up, you wouldn't put any pressure on me. at all to buy a car no not at all i uh i just you know i try to honestly it's kind of it's almost like a sales pitch to just say you know hey no pressure um check it out you know if you want it you know take it home with you and so people really uh you know people people people like that you know they don't like to feel like someone's just being right over top of them you know about um you know or anything, really.

[91] So that's kind of my approach with, you know, with not just the sales, but just kind of life in general, just take things as it comes.

[92] I bet you you're the kind of friend that would pretty much do anything for anybody.

[93] That's the, that you seem like that.

[94] Yeah, yeah.

[95] Yeah, yeah.

[96] I try to.

[97] I try to be there for anybody who, you know, who needs me pretty much.

[98] So I can't get past the fact that you bought a car at LAX.

[99] What the hell happened there?

[100] Oh, I know this story.

[101] Yeah, it was years ago.

[102] My writing partner at the time Greg Daniels and then when we first came to LA in 85 and didn't know anything, there was like a, you know, I think a company called Rent a Rec.

[103] You could rent a beat -up old car.

[104] And we rented it and then not knowing anything said, how much would it be just to buy this?

[105] And the guy looked at us like, you're kidding, right?

[106] This thing's barely a car.

[107] But we bought it for, I think, like $700 or something.

[108] Which one was that?

[109] The Asuzu Opa.

[110] Oh, wow.

[111] 1777, it Suezoo Opal, and it had a sticker on the back that said, I heart my, and then the head of a poodle.

[112] And we couldn't, and it had a racing stripe, a four -cylinder car with a racing.

[113] With a four -cylinder car with a racing stripe, which is like, it is like, yeah, it's like putting a spoiler on a turtle.

[114] And we drove this car around, and then I bought it from Greg.

[115] I was like, that sucker let this thing out of his mitts.

[116] You bought him out?

[117] bought him out.

[118] And then didn't understand why I'd like try and, you know, I'd take a young lady out on a date and should get in the car and it looked like a family of six had been murdered in the back seat with a machete.

[119] The seat was, anyway, this is a car even you couldn't sell, Jonah.

[120] And I drove it around L .A. for about two and a half years.

[121] Jonah, what's the strangest car you've had to sell?

[122] Is there real any oddities or anything?

[123] there there's not been anything that's just really stood out however um what comes to mind with that question though is my my granddad had this uh limo at one point he had purchased it from from an auction and so he had a limo and uh he sold it to somebody but i just somebody come up and wanted it you should drive around in a limo but you're driving yeah yeah oh that'd be great a stretch limo.

[124] You know, it'd be funny if I bought a early 80s stretch limousine that had been used for like 600 proms and it has 140 ,000 miles on it.

[125] But I drive it.

[126] And then every now and then, Sony, you stick your head out the sunroof and go, woo.

[127] I would love to be the woo girl.

[128] I've done that.

[129] I'm wooed.

[130] And then I'd be looking for a low bridge.

[131] Oh, come on.

[132] Come on.

[133] Oh, it just grazed the bun of your hair.

[134] That's all.

[135] Come on.

[136] Now, it looks like you've got some tattoos on your chest.

[137] Is that right, Jonah?

[138] You got your shirt open?

[139] I see some tattoos there.

[140] How much, how much ink you got?

[141] That's what I like to say.

[142] That's what I say to the fellas in a restroom.

[143] Hey, buddy, how much ink you got?

[144] Let's see it.

[145] It's not weird at all.

[146] Show us your chest, Jonah.

[147] Hey, Jonah, let's see that chest.

[148] This is how I talk to people.

[149] Hey, I might buy a car.

[150] Take off your shirt.

[151] That's not the first time someone's asking me that.

[152] Oh, no, is that true?

[153] I'm thinking I might buy that car, but first, let's see those pecks.

[154] A little different kind of test drive I'd like to do.

[155] I won't need the car.

[156] Yeah.

[157] Sorry, this compliment turned crazy really fast.

[158] No, it's okay.

[159] It's okay.

[160] I honestly don't even know how many tattoos that I have.

[161] have.

[162] I just know that I have two sleeves and a chest piece.

[163] I would say that that might be 50 or so.

[164] I don't know.

[165] What do you mean you don't?

[166] So you're not doing it deliberately or what happened?

[167] Did you fall asleep with someone tattooed you?

[168] No, it's just at some point after you've had so many, you just kind of stop keeping count and like, you know, so I don't I don't really know exactly how many I have at this point.

[169] You are laid back.

[170] I do know.

[171] Yeah, I know.

[172] You're incredibly laid back.

[173] Oh, I don't know.

[174] I just, these tattoos, I don't even know.

[175] I'll just let people do it.

[176] That's so cool.

[177] That's cool.

[178] Yeah, like, I'm asleep and somebody's just tattooing me. Yeah, I mean, it's, I've had, I have several.

[179] My friend is the one that did most of them.

[180] He was interested in trying to utilize drawing as like a career, but he wasn't getting anywhere that way you know you can't just sell pictures for a living usually like drawings so he got into tattooing and I think I was like his first one if I wasn't his first one I know I had to been like in his top three you let your friend you let your friend practice on you right that's correct what was the tattoo a great artist it was actually I think it may have been the bear here right that's cool that's really good Wow, that's awesome.

[181] That guy's good.

[182] Yeah.

[183] So I mean, so I had full confidence in him from the jump pretty much.

[184] Yeah.

[185] I didn't doubt him for a second.

[186] So you said you have a three -year -old child?

[187] Is that right?

[188] I do.

[189] Her name's Ella.

[190] And in the days, you know, coming up towards the interview, I was talking to her about you and trying to say, like, hey, dad's going to talk to Conan.

[191] So throughout the week, she had been just kind of running around the house saying Conan, Conan.

[192] A lot of three -year -olds do that.

[193] I'm huge with the three -year -olds.

[194] Right.

[195] Before the brain is completely formed, they love me. And then once they have reason, the reason center expands, I'm through.

[196] That's really cool, though.

[197] I would, I bet you'd be a really great dad because you're so chill, you know?

[198] I think that's a great, that's a great energy to get off of a parent, don't you think?

[199] Yeah, I think so.

[200] Just calm, relax, sweet.

[201] That's great energy.

[202] Yeah.

[203] Yeah.

[204] Yeah.

[205] I try, I try to, I try to just be very calm with her, you know, and just, you know, if she does something that she's not supposed to do, I always just try to just be extremely calm with her and just kind of set her down, tell her like, hey, you're not supposed to do.

[206] that you know so yeah i just try to be very just chill right there for sure and then try and put her in a uh 1982 Chevy Chavette yeah get in here with a high interest deferred load yeah exactly that's really good parenting is put that kid in the i see you yeah i see you in a cordoba um did you have a question for me is there anything i can help you with uh yeah conan i was going to ask uh if you had just like a go -to sales pitch i mean what what would you um you know how would you word it how would you how would you act if you were trying to just sell somebody just you know anything anything wow well it depends on what it is i would say this heroin oh well i'm sorry okay maybe that's the wrong way to go yeah no no I just was trying to pick up a product that didn't need a lot of selling.

[207] I think I agree with you.

[208] I'm very bad at convincing people to do something.

[209] I'm very uncomfortable in that role.

[210] I've always more or less tried to tell people if this feels like a good situation for you, then you should do it.

[211] But I think I'd be in a lot of trouble if my livelihood, putting food on my kid's plate relied on me selling.

[212] somebody something.

[213] I think you have the right idea, which is, I find myself as a consumer, when people are saying, yep, this is, when I go into a store and they go, yep, this is what we have and I think it's really nice, but if it's, you know, it's either right for you or it isn't, I'm more attracted to that product than if someone's saying you've got to put this on or you've got to try and drive this, you know, you can't leave this store without at least trying it.

[214] And I just really want out of there instantly.

[215] So I agree with your approach.

[216] Well, great.

[217] I'm glad to know that I'm doing something right.

[218] I think so too.

[219] I think you're doing a lot right.

[220] I think you're doing a lot right.

[221] I very much appreciate it.

[222] And I definitely think everyone should listen to Conan O 'Brien needs a friend available wherever you get your podcast.

[223] There it is.

[224] I'm not interested right now.

[225] Listen to me. You cannot leave until you try this Conan O 'Brien guy.

[226] Now, first of all, he seems shrill and off -putting, but over time, you're going to find he's your best friend.

[227] This is a 31 flavors that came in for an ice cream.

[228] Okay.

[229] Corner Bryant needs a friend.

[230] Available on two scoops.

[231] Now with sprinkles.

[232] I used to make up a lot of stuff.

[233] What do you mean?

[234] Like, I sold watches.

[235] I used to lie a lot.

[236] And when people would ask me questions, instead of asking what the, like, what was the right thing, I just made it up.

[237] So, like, you tell them this can, you can cook a chicken with this watch.

[238] Or just this watch works.

[239] This is a watch that I didn't take Yeah or they'd be like Where was it manufacturer I'd be like I don't know Switzerland and it would be like a cassio Oh my god Sona The answer is always prog It was made in Prague No I know I always So you would just lie I would and people would believe me Well of course they would Because they like they like people who know what they're talking about You know what you were talking about Yeah but they didn't know that I didn't know what I was talking about People like someone who they think knows what they're talking about.

[240] You know what's interesting?

[241] Jonah and Sona are both very chill.

[242] Jonah, you're one of the more chill, relaxed -centered people I've met.

[243] And Sona, to your credit, you are a very relaxed person who knows herself and is confident in herself.

[244] Yet you're very different types of that relaxed.

[245] Jonah seems principled and honest.

[246] And you will say anything.

[247] You'll just tell people absolute bullshit, something Jonah would never do.

[248] Yeah, I wasn't even working on commission.

[249] Like, it didn't matter.

[250] You weren't even selling watches.

[251] No. You were just in the store.

[252] I'm definitely Team Jonah, not Team Sona.

[253] Gulp, gulp, gulp, gulp, gulp.

[254] Well, Jonah, it was very nice talking to you.

[255] And if I get to Tupelo, which I'd love to do, I've never been there.

[256] And I would like to see the rather modest home where Elvis Presley was born.

[257] And I know we then moved to Memphis, went to Hume's high school.

[258] And so his time in Tupelo isn't that long, but, but yeah, I'd love to go there.

[259] I would love to go and see it.

[260] So I would look you up and we could tool around.

[261] And whatever car you, you deem, you deem suitable.

[262] Absolutely.

[263] Maybe I can even try to track down that limo and see if we can, we can drive around and sit in the limo.

[264] I may also, I may also tattoo you as we drive around, since you don't seem to care what goes on your body.

[265] Yeah, just bring it on.

[266] I'm here for the experience.

[267] All right, Jonah, very cool talking to you.

[268] Thank you very much and have a great day.

[269] Bye, Jonah.

[270] You too.

[271] Thank you guys.

[272] See you later.
