[4] I'm Daily Wire, editor -in -chief John Bickley with Georgia Howe.

[5] It's Tuesday, March 19th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.

[6] Former Trump White House advisor Peter Navarro reported to prison today.

[7] This comes just one day after the Supreme Court rejected a stay of his sentence.

[8] Navarro was convicted in September over contempt of Congress charges for refusing requests for his testimony and documents from the House Select Committee that investigated the January 6th riots.

[9] Navarro spoke this morning in West Miami near the prison where he will serve four months.

[10] Let's talk about some facts here.

[11] I am the first senior White House advisor in the history of our republic that has ever been charged.

[12] with this alleged crime.

[13] And I say alleged because for hundreds of years, this has not been a crime.

[14] And for 50 years, the Department of Justice has maintained the principle of absolute testimonial immunity.

[15] And it was only with my case that somehow that has changed.

[16] Navarro's appeal on the merits remains pending, but he will have to begin serving his sentence in the meantime.

[17] Navarro was ordered on March 11th to report to prison on Tuesday.

[18] Leaders of both chambers in Congress, along with President Biden, announced a deal today to keep the government funded.

[19] Disputes over funding for the Department of Homeland Security had previously held up negotiations.

[20] Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce has more.

[21] House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a statement that House and Senate committees have begun drafting bill text to be prepared for releasing consideration by the full House and Senate as soon as possible.

[22] Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer echoed Johnson's announcement.

[23] With funding for several agencies set to expire Saturday morning, Congress will need to move quickly.

[24] Agreements were made last week on funding for nearly all departments in need of funds, except for Homeland Security.

[25] Several sources tell NBC the deal will include a full -year DHS funding bill, not a stopgap.

[26] Passing the bill will still be difficult in such a short time frame.

[27] Johnson has signaled he'll give lawmakers 72 hours to read the text.

[28] Both chambers need to vote before 11 .59 p .m. Eastern time on Friday to avoid a partial government shut down the following day.

[29] The Supreme Court has cleared the way for Texas to enforce a new law giving local police the power to arrest illegal immigrants.

[30] The court rejected a request made by the Biden administration that said states have no authority to legislate on immigration.

[31] The law can now go into effect while litigation continues in lower courts, though there's a chance it could still be blocked at a later date.

[32] The dispute is the latest clash between the Biden administration and Texas over immigration enforcement at the U .S.-Mexico border.

[33] Former President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit accusing an ABC news anchor of defamation.

[34] George Stephanopoulos, the host in question, made the assertion that Trump had been found guilty of rape in the E. Jean Carroll trial during a heated interview with Republican Nancy Mace, who herself is a rape victim.

[35] Here's some of that interview.

[36] Well, you're welcome to say that, but you're also have to answer the question.

[37] Why are you supporting someone who's been found liable for rape?

[38] I just answered your question.

[39] What is the answer?

[40] He was not found guilty in a civil, in a criminal court of law.

[41] It was a civil, it was sexual abuse.

[42] It wasn't actually rape, by the way.

[43] And E. Jean Carroll joked about all the money she's going to get and made a mockery out of this case.

[44] And I think that's offensive.

[45] A jury found recently that Trump had sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll in 1996, awarding her $88 million for battery and defamation.

[46] Trump's lawsuit claims that Stephanopoulos's statements were, quote, false, intentional, malicious, and designed to cause harm.

[47] Two retired Army generals appeared on Capitol Hill today to testify about the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.

[48] Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Millie, and former commander of the U .S. Central Command, General Kenneth McKenzie, testified before the Foreign Affairs Committee.

[49] The Biden administration has blamed the previous administration saying Trump's decisions, severely constrained.

[50] Biden.

[51] Meanwhile, a government watchdog found that both administrations were to blame for the withdrawal.

[52] Millie insists that many decisions surrounding the evacuation came too late.

[53] Here's a bit from Millie's opening statement.

[54] It was my view at the time that it was only a matter of when, not if, the Afghan government would collapse and the Taliban would take control.

[55] Again, I previously publicly testified and I consistently supported a negotiated end of the war, but only if there There was a reduction in violence leading to a permanent ceasefire, and there were Afghan -to -Afghan negotiations leading to a power -sharing agreement between the Afghan government and the Taliban, and it was my view that absent those conditions, I was not in favor of a unilateral withdrawal of U .S. forces because of my assessment of the associated costs and risks.

[56] And the CDC has put out a warning about an increase in measles cases in the U .S. The agency pointed to the fact that the number of cases during the first few months of 24 have already matched the number for all of 2023.

[57] As of Thursday, there have been 58 confirmed cases in the U .S. Over 90 % of those cases are linked to international travel and a large portion involve young children.
