[8] Are you pretty happy with your job?
[9] Am I pretty happy?
[10] Most days, yeah.
[11] Tell me this.
[12] What about your coworkers?
[13] How's their employee morale, would you say?
[14] It depends on how heavy the beatings are.
[15] But no, actually, they're doing it right.
[16] You know, workplace morale is something, especially in economy like this, is something that's really worth thinking about.
[17] It translates directly into productivity.
[18] Low morale, bad for the bottom line.
[19] Good morale is kind of a tide that lifts all boats.
[20] Now, here's Michael Johnson, who studies organizational behavior at the United States.
[21] University of Washington.
[22] A lot of the current research on employee morale and managing people in general in organizations suggest that this may be the only remaining competitive advantage that organizations have.
[23] Organizations that do this well, they tend to do really well financially too.
[24] But, Kai, let me run an interesting wrinkle past you.
[25] In a tough job market, like this one, fewer people quit their jobs, less than $2 million a month now compared to more than $3 million, before the recession, which means that more grumpy employees are staying put.
[26] Right.
[27] So they're staying put because they're worried that they can't find another job.
[28] Exactly.
[29] How do you measure grumpiness?
[30] Well, unfortunately, that's the problem.
[31] It's hard.
[32] A lot of firms do surveys, but personally, in my work that I've...
[33] Here's the thing for HR managers everywhere.
[34] We all lie on those surveys.
[35] Yeah, exactly.
[36] We lie on most surveys, but especially, you know, how happy are you?
[37] and I'm the person who pays you and I need you to tell me how happy you are.
[38] That's right.
[39] So sometimes you have to get creative.
[40] We actually put this question out to readers on our Freakonomics blog.
[41] And we got some good answers.
[42] Here's Damon Bevin.
[43] He's a software engineer in Lexington, Kentucky.
[44] He used to visit lots of different companies.
[45] Here's how he sussed out worker morale in those places.
[46] I look for the number of deal work comics and that seemed to be inversional to the level of morale.
[47] A lot of deal work comics seem to be like a passive -aggressive way of an employee complaining.
[48] This is good.
[49] First of all, I love the Dilbert and X, but also I love that we're crowdsourcing this segment now.
[50] That's awesome.
[51] Of course.
[52] You know, we've cut down here.
[53] I don't know if you knew.
[54] All right, try this one.
[55] This is from a management consultant named Tim Wadlow.
[56] He visited more than 100 manufacturing companies around the world.
[57] He came to believe that parking direction is an indicator of employee morale.
[58] Here's what Wadlow saw at the companies that had low morale.
[59] A lot of these people seemed very anxious to leave work, and often, as they got to work, they would back their cars into their parking spot.
[60] And it seemed like maybe the moment they got to work, they were so dreading it that they were planning their escape.
[61] I like that.
[62] That's great.
[63] Now, that doesn't apply here at Marketplace World Headquarters because our parking lot is mandated nose in parking only.
[64] That's the way to keep morale high.
[65] That's right.
[66] You must.
[67] You must.
[68] You must.
[69] They work.
[70] Okay, this is good anecdotal evidence.
[71] The key phrase being there anecdotal, my friend.
[72] Exactly.
[73] What you really want to know is you want to keep your eye on sick days, because calling in sick, especially when you're not sick, is kind of, you know, the ultimate expression of bad morale.
[74] Well, yeah, but what, I mean, come on, HR is going to call everybody who calls in sick and says, I need to know from your doctor?
[75] What are we?
[76] 12?
[77] Not going to happen, unfortunately.
[78] Michael Johnson, the UW professor we heard from earlier.
[79] He investigated a pair of auto parts plants that tried out a variety of incentives.
[80] Some were carrots, some were sticks.
[81] They wanted to cut down on absenteeism.
[82] He found that the combination of threat and reward actually worked very well, but he also found an interesting loophole, a little something we call the FMLA or the Family Medical Leave Act.
[83] You know you with that?
[84] Yeah, you bet.
[85] It's the get time off to care for a sick, injured, whatever, a family member, yeah.
[86] Exactly, the federal law.
[87] Now, when the company made it harder to call in sick the old way, some employees found a new way.
[88] Here's Michael Johnson.
[89] Overall, absenteeism dropped about four to four and a half days, but the absenteeism that was related to the FMLA went up about a day or day and a half over the year.
[90] So it seemed to us, they might actually be gaming the system so that they could keep taking days off work and not suffer any punishment for it.
[91] Right.
[92] So it took us a while to get there, but this is the hidden side, right.
[93] This is the unintended consequences of all that stuff.
[94] That's exactly right.
[95] And, you know, at the end of the day, isn't it nice to know that whenever you're feeling down and need a little me time, the federal government is there to give you a day off?
