[60] Tell us a little bit about yourself.
[61] Well, I am, obviously, I'm a mom.
[62] I'm a recent empty nester.

[64] No, no, no, no. I kind of emptied the nest a bit.
[65] I'm one of those unusual.
[66] Did you murder your family?
[67] Oh, my God.

[69] Time for this nest to be empty.

[71] I kind of, my kids were away, and then I sold my town home.
[72] But, uh, so, so, so I kind of, I kind of sold the nest.

[75] Like seven and eight?

[77] They are, they're 19 and 21.

[79] That's still pretty young.

[82] So the serious side of the story is I have elderly parents.
[83] I'm the youngest of four and I'm the only single divorced one.
[84] And so when we thought, you know, it was getting to be the time where it felt like my parents could use some eyes on the ground and someone in there that could really, you know, just be there and make sure they don't need more support.
[85] Yep.
[86] So my daughter happened to be an O 'Pair in Italy at the time.
[87] And my son was living with his dad.
[88] So I was like, all right, guys, go and make a life.
[89] Go and make a life.
[90] I gave you the first 19 years.
[91] That's nice.
[92] I have said to Sona many times, Hey, could you do me a favor?
[93] Go and make a life.
[94] And she made two.
[95] She made two.
[96] Well, she's got more on me then and my kids.
[97] I don't know.
[98] You seem formidable, Margaret.
[99] And tell us, so did you grow up in Calgary?
[100] Tell us about your life.
[101] I kind of did.
[102] Well, it's funny.
[103] So I was born here.
[104] But my parents came from, well, eventually.
[105] They were in Oklahoma when I was conceived.
[106] but they're New Yorkers and moved around a ton.
[107] And so when I was three, we moved back into the U .S. for a few years.
[108] So long story short, I'm Canadian.
[109] I grew up here mostly other than living in the States for a few years here and there.
[110] But I don't feel super Canadian because I was raised by Americans.
[111] And I see that there's a big difference.
[112] There is a big difference, yes.
[113] I notice that there's a piano right behind you.
[114] There is.
[115] Is that just a coincidence or are you?
[116] Whoa.
[117] I sort of took advantage of the moving in with my parents thing, and I took this career I've had, I've been a piano teacher and early childhood teacher for almost 40 years now.
[118] I'm in my early 50s, but I started young.
[119] And I kind of did this now or never thing and thought, okay, if I don't have to pay my mortgage quite as, you know, if I don't need quite as much financial support, I'm going to go for it.
[120] And I started a couple of unusual musical offerings.
[121] So I'm a pianist, obviously.
[122] I hope with that.
[123] I just made that clear because I'm not super concise in this setting.
[124] No, that's okay.
[125] No, you put the main information at the end, but that's fine.
[126] In editing, we can put the main information up front.
[127] I'm a pianist.
[128] But then I also, so you're a pianist.
[129] and do you teach kids the piano or do you teach them all kinds of music?
[130] Well, I do teach piano because it's kind of like the easiest, you know, place to put up a sign and say, hey, you know, help me, help me with my career and allow me to connect with kids.
[131] So that's really important.
[132] Then I also do this thing called intuitive composing, where I compose personal soundtracks for people based on, I guess, my intuition, my years of studying and being immersed in music.
[133] Are you saying that you could talk to me for a little bit, get a sense of who I was, and then compose a song about me?
[134] Yeah, let's do this.
[135] I can, yes.
[136] And what's?
[137] I don't, it's crazy.
[138] I know, I know.
[139] It's not crazy.
[140] I absolutely believe you could do it.
[141] What kind of song would you, what would the song sound like?
[142] The Jaws theme.
[143] No, that's not the Jaws theme The Halloween thing Okay Everyone has Yay That one's actually I think it's actually a combination of the two The sixth thing is Can you play the bass and the Oh my God Oh my God Margaret, that is me That is me Menacing and clownish at the same time.

[145] That is amazing.
[146] It's funny because I really worked not to write it or create anything for you guys, even though I knew I was going to be on the show until the weekend it just came to me. And Conan, I'll be honest.
[147] Now I don't know if I should say Conan or Conan.
[148] No, no, whatever you, you know, as long as it's don't sit with respect and love, I'm fine.
[149] Is Bugs Bunny, Carl Stalling.
[150] I just kept thinking, do you guys know?

[156] Well, any of them, because I feel like you could be followed around by a weep, weep, weep, do little, little, little, you know, because you do it in your podcast.

[158] Margaret, it's funny you say that about Bugs Bunny and how the Bugs Bunny themes and background music remind you of me because I've always thought I was a cartoon character.
[159] I've felt that way my whole life.
[160] Yeah, I love it.
[161] Yeah, so that's a very apt perception, and I will take it.
[162] I think, I mean, I was an avid cartoon watcher, and, you know, your Bugs Bunny was the thing.
[163] And when you, you tend to do those like, da -da -da -da -da, and you go into the funny accents, like the, here, see, I don't want to, you know, you live in that.
[164] I swear you live in a live world of cars.
[165] Stalling.
[166] Yes, I do, Margaret.
[167] And I, you just showed me myself and now I'm filled with dread.
[168] I don't want to be near that guy.
[169] But you know what I love, Margaret, I love that you're working with kids and you're making this music and you say intuitive music.
[170] So are they always using instruments or are they using stuff other than instruments sometimes to make music?
[171] Okay.
[172] Well, so those are, so the intuitive composing is, is the one of the things I'm offering.
[173] And the other thing, when I'm working with early childhood, so children that are five and under, it's called music in nature.
[174] And the intuitive side of that is just working with what is around and following the sort of the children as they explore and then creating activities based on that.
[175] So, for example, we're out in a natural park.
[176] You know, if the children, if we find sticks, we're using the sticks and we're playing drums on the trees or we're playing.
[177] a graded fence xylophone and we're sort of we're sort of touring the park and um i'm creating i mean i obviously have a lot of songs i've created in activities to lead but if if something you know occurs to it a child or even even sometimes a parent then i just you know change gears and and try to follow their lead in that respect that sounds kind of fascinating because what you're doing is taking anything around you that's found and then showing kids this can be music or if not music we can make noises with this and then it's actually probably the most simplest form of creativity and a great thing for kids to learn i would think well yeah i think so because i mean you know arguably just in any art like any sound is is music right and so what's what's fascinating too is you can you can teach children so many things you know like we spend a lot of time at the river and so right now in calgary we've got a lot of ice on the river's edge so if we can yank pieces of ice off and we can you know hit the rocks with them they make these incredible exploding sounds but at the same time children you know their little brains they're learning about the physics is if we throw things how things land i i hope i hope they're also i hope they're also learning stay away from an icy river are there are their parents that get worried are Are there parents that get worried about, you know, the kids, and you're saying, hey, jump into that canyon and try and see if you can find something to make music out of?
[178] This is the woman that also sent your kids packing at seven and eight.
[179] Let's walk on this really thin ice and see how many cracks we can.
[180] Yeah, I know.
[181] Matt just pointed out.
[182] You're told your kids to get lost at 17.
[183] There's a guest room here for them.

[185] Always nice to have a guest room for your five -year -old.

[193] And so today I had little kids that were in their rubber boots and rain suits and, you know, holding my hands.
[194] We were literally walking in the river.
[195] You know, the temperatures, I guess it's in the high 50s right now.
[196] speaking your language of Fahrenheit.
[197] Well, we are the...
[198] Which is very warm.
[199] We are the dominant empire, so...
[200] Oh, my God.
[201] Oh, geez.
[202] I'm sorry.
[203] We're like the Rome.

[205] Well, you're welcome to your strange methods, Celsius and such.
[206] Yeah, we really have our shit together.

[208] We invented the ring ding.

[210] what it's a cake it's a new cake you know what a ring dinging is you ever had a ring ding before you mean a ding dong no there's a ring pop there's a ring ding isn't there I don't know what a ring ding a ring ding a ring ding I thought there was a ring ding I don't know this is important that we get to the bottom of this this is the kind of stuff we worry about here in America Margaret yeah no ring dings that's it right there so it's a knockoff ding don't yeah well I always we knew of ringdings and I think that's what they had maybe in our area.

[212] A ding -dong is like a legit version of one of those.
[213] I love ding -dongs.
[214] It's a little cake covered with chocolate and then there's a cream filling.
[215] Yeah, but it's the same thing as a ring ding.
[216] I think in our area we had ringdings.
[217] Yeah, but you're in our area now.
[218] So here it's a ding -dong.
[219] You're in the ding -dong territory.
[220] I think they're different companies.
[221] Hostess and then whatever...
[222] Drake's cakes, you know, dog and pony ship makes that.

[226] Look, we got to the, you know what, sad, Margaret?
[227] Hostess is the dominant empire.

[231] The thing I love about this interview is that we got to the crux of who Margaret is, which is that ding -dongs are made by hostess and ringdings are made by Drake's cakes.
[232] Correct.

[234] And I knew that that's what we were going to talk about the minute.
[235] I knew that you worked doing natural music with children.
[236] Well, these kids sound kind of hearty, like they get out there.
[237] You know, sometimes these days parents are too, not Sona, but a lot of parents are too worried about their, no, a lot of parents these days are too worried about their kids and rough play.
[238] Sona not so much.
[239] She often doesn't know where they are.
[240] No idea.
[241] That's true.
[242] I found them in the mall.
[243] Remember when I found your kids just wandering the parking lot of a mall?
[244] Yeah, they were just in the parking lot.
[245] Yeah, and you were giving them each a knife and told them go get dinner.
[246] Yeah, they were going, mama, mama.
[247] And I was like, figure it out.
[248] Figure it out.
[249] And then you rent it out their room.
[250] Margaret.
[251] Sona probably knows that nowadays there's a huge amount of information around risky play and how important it is for kids, which makes me laugh because I'm closer to Conan's era.
[252] Risky play was just go outside and don't come back until dinner time.
[253] Yes.
[254] But nowadays, it's contrived.
[255] So I happen to be in a great spot with my year -round music and nature program.
[256] to encourage parents, you know, because resilience is the other catchphrase that parents are using right now.
[257] We want to teach resilience, which I would say as, you know, a mother of a 19 and 20 year old that probably was too in their face.
[258] You know, I think it's a good thing that we're hopefully going in the other direction.
[259] I was of the generation where you, your parents never knew where you were.
[260] You wandered around.
[261] Someone invited you to get into a van.
[262] and you just did.
[263] And if you were gone...
[264] Oh, Jesus.
[265] Now, and if you were gone for a couple of months...
[266] Hold out some ringdings and you went right in.
[267] They'd give you a ring ding and you'd get all sleepy and then you'd wake up in a different state.

[269] But what I'm saying is, that's the world I grew up in and it was a better time.

[348] out you that I find having listened to your podcast and this is all I can only write what I know of you right which is the external Conan yeah is you you'll just come out from left field with these zany things right so what I'd start doing is I take the super straightforward theme and start adding these like dissonances right those now make it into I take the straightforward C major and I'm adding some I love it you know what I love is that what I'm getting from that is someone who's basically upbeat, straightforward, well -intentioned, but very damaged and broken.
[349] Like the little, I can feel like the little shards You're kind of open about that.

[351] It should be played on like a honky tonk piano that's detuned a little bit.
[352] It's not right, because it sounds like jazz and you despise jazz.

[356] of it that I think is you guys are just man the jazz aspect of it though he likes the ring dings of jazz yeah you like the ding don't the jazz aspect of it is to indicate it's the intellect because conan's got this intellect right yeah matt what about my intellect where and and jazz is the intellectual music right that's out there it's a very intellectual that's what i like when i listen to music is some intellect thrown at me by a guy with a goatee and some bongos no i like I'll take the jazz out.
