[0] I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire Editor -in -Chief John Bickley.
[1] It's Friday, September 1st, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
[2] Joe Biggs, who the government says served as an instigator and a leader for the proud boys, was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison Thursday on several charges related to January 6.
[3] Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce has more.
[4] This is one of the harsher sentences in the Capitol Riot cases, with the longest sentence being handed down to Oathkeeper's founder Stuart Rhodes, for 18 years.
[5] The government originally tried to get Big sentenced to 33 years, as prosecutors argued he was a vocal leader and influential proponent for the group.
[6] An attorney for Biggs argued that he was sold untruths by the leader of the proud boys and former President Trump.
[7] Before the sentence was handed down, Biggs apologized for his actions.
[8] Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas released a statement along with his annual financial disclosure form on Thursday.
[9] In his statement, Thomas said he flew on businessman Harlan Crow's private jet due to security concerns after the Dobbs decision was leaked.
[10] He also said he continues to work with Supreme Court officials for guidance on whether he should further amend his reports from any prior years.
[11] The justice has faced criticism for vacationing with Crow.
[12] Overdose deaths from fake prescription pills are becoming more common among young adults and, according to the CDC, have more than doubled in recent years.
[13] A CDC report found that from mid -2019 to the end of 2021, overdose deaths involving counterfeit drugs rose from 2 % to 4 .7%.
[14] In the majority of cases, people thought they were taking oxycodone or Xanax, but the pills were not obtained through a legitimate pharmacy.
[15] While the pills often look normal, they're often laced with deadly levels of fentanyl.
[16] The highest court in Texas let a new law that bans transgender medical treatments for minors take effect today.
[17] This comes one week after a state district judge ruled that the pending law violated the rights of transgender children and their families and issued a temporary injunction to block the law.
[18] State officials immediately appealed to the state's highest court for civil cases.
[19] A mom in California has been awarded $100 ,000 from a middle school that she said socially transitioned her daughter into a trans -identifying boy.
[20] The mother claims that her daughter was told by the school that she, quote, was upset because she didn't know who she truly was inside.
[21] The school also allowed the child to use the boys' restroom and male pronouns in class without her mom's consent.
[22] Despite not admitting fault, the Spreckle Union's school district settlement marks an important moment in the debate across the U .S. about how parental rights fits in with children's decisions in school settings.
[23] A man who was caught on camera attempting to break into UFC boss Dana White's house has been arrested in Levant, Maine.
[24] According to the Pinaub Scott County Sheriff's Office, the suspect was arrested.
[25] Early Monday morning, White posted a photo on Instagram of the man that his home security system captured attempting to break down his front door, saying that he would pay $2 ,500 to the first person who could identify the man. White said the following about the experience.
[26] I mean, it's just, it's crazy.
[27] I don't know, I'm assuming the guy was breaking in to try to rob the house.
[28] And my sister and her husband.
[29] and some of his friends are up there visiting right now.
[30] And, yeah, the guy came up and tried to kick the door in a couple times and then noticed the camera was there, tried to rip it off and rang the doorbell, freaked out and ran away.
[31] Listen, whether you're in Vegas or anywhere else, don't fucking around around my house.
[32] According to WMTW News 8, the case has been turned over to the district attorney's office for additional review.
[33] A viral video shows police in Nebraska pulling over a driver who is driving a huge bull in the passenger seat of his car.
[34] The strange traffic stop happened Wednesday morning after police got a call about a man driving eastbound on interstate 274 with a large animal on board.
[35] They then received a second call about a car driving into town with a cow in it.
[36] Responding officers thought it would be a calf, but were surprised to find a large bull named Howdy Duty, that's actually the story, sitting shotgun in a car.
[37] Police say it was an obvious traffic violation.
[38] But there were some sightable issues with that situation.
[39] The officer chose to write him a warning and ask him to take the animal back home and to leave the city.
