[3] I'm Daily Wire, editor -in -chief John Bickley.
[4] It's Tuesday, May 21st, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
[5] Donald Trump's defense team rested their case this morning.
[6] The former president did not take the stand to testify.
[7] Daily Wire's senior editor, Cabot Phillips, has the latest.
[8] The trial is set to resume next Tuesday when Judge Mershan, the defense.
[9] and prosecution will review the charges and the jury instructions.
[10] The jury was also dismissed until next week when they'll be given final instructions after hearing closing arguments.
[11] At the moment, it appears jury deliberation will begin next Wednesday.
[12] The past few days of questioning led to bombshell testimony from the prosecution's star witness Michael Cohen.
[13] Cohen, who previously worked for Trump, was caught in several situations on the stand in which he appeared to be lying.
[14] In addition, he admitted to stealing roughly $60 ,000 from the Trump organization.
[15] The Biden administration says it's releasing 1 million barrels of gasoline from the Northeast Reserve in an effort to combat high prices at the pump.
[16] Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce has more.
[17] The reserve that Biden will pull from was established after Superstorm Sandy.
[18] According to officials, the sale will be allocated in increments of 100 ,000 barrels at a time.
[19] The Department of Energy says the move is intended to lower the cost for Americans as the summer driving season starts.
[20] It also follows a congressional mandate to sell off this person.
[21] particular reserve before closing it, which was part of the $1 .2 trillion spending deal Congress approved in March.
[22] According to AAA, gasoline prices average about $360 per gallon nationwide.
[23] That's up six cents from a year ago.
[24] White House Press Secretary Corrine John Pierre says this builds on the previous action the president has taken to lower energy costs.
[25] Derek Morgan, the former senior vice president for American fuel and petrochemical manufacturers, says it won't help much.
[26] It's really a drop in the bucket, quite frankly.
[27] The refined storage is really meant for absolute acute emergency as like a hurricane or some kind of major weather event that just makes it impossible to get supplies in.
[28] So what I would say is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is crude oil.
[29] It's much larger.
[30] That can help on the margins, but really there's not enough refined product storage to make a considerable difference.
[31] Over a dozen media outlets are now petitioning for the release of audio.
[32] recordings of President Biden's interview with special counsel Robert Herr.
[33] CNN, the Associated Press, and the Wall Street Journal, among others, are joining a lawsuit from conservative groups, judicial watch, and the Heritage Foundation against Biden's DOJ.
[34] The suit says the recordings have, quote, significant public interest.
[35] The president is claiming executive privilege to keep the recordings private after House Republicans sought them last week.
[36] The White House said Biden did so at the request of his attorney general, Merrick Garland.
[37] The head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is stepping down after hundreds of complaints against him.
[38] President Biden will find a new leader for the bank regulation agency.
[39] That's according to the White House, Martin Gruenberg was forced to step down from his position in the wake of scathing reports released earlier this month about the FDIC's toxic work environment.
[40] The investigation found over 500 complaints, including stalking, sexual harassment.
[41] and discrimination were not handled properly.
[42] Meanwhile, House Majority Whiped Tom Emmer says Gruenberg should have resigned years ago.
[43] Based on the hundreds of pages of report that showed this toxic work environment with sexual harassment and all kinds of awful things with the employees, and yet here he goes again, hey, I'm going to resign, I'm prepared to do that, but not until we have a successor.
[44] I'm sure there are other capable people, by the way, that are there that can pick up the piece and continue to run the FDIC in a much better fashion than Mr. Groomberg did.

[48] An American National was mistakenly accused of taking part in a coup while in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
[49] Daily Wire reporter Zach Jewel reports.
[50] Colpatrick Ducey, an engineer living in Eswatini, told ABC News he had nothing to do with it, despite online reports that say he was involved.
[51] Congo officials also confirmed that Ducey did not participate in the attempted coup.
[52] Ducy says this was all just a huge case of mistaken identity.
[53] DRC authorities say that the coup attempt was led by Christian Malanga, a DRC businessman and politician with U .S. ties.
[54] Malanga's goal was to remove the president of the country, alleging that the president had ruined it.
[55] He was killed in a shootout with presidential guards.
[56] Fulton County District Attorney Fonney Willis is up for re -election in Georgia.
[57] She faces attorney Christian Wise Smith in the Democratic primary, the same challenger she faced four years ago.
[58] As we've covered on Morning Wire, Willis is currently prosecuting former President Trump in an election interference case, but is facing scrutiny herself for her relationship with the special prosecutor she hired.
[59] Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, the judge presiding over that case, is also up for re -election.
[60] And Elvis Presley's granddaughter Riley Keough is suing a company planning to auction off the iconic Graceland estate.
[61] Lending firm Nasani Investments claims that Lisa Presley, Elvis's daughter, had taken out a loan against the Memphis property.
[62] Keio has owned the mansion since Lisa's death last year and says both the foreclosure and the lending company are fraudulent.
[63] The firm claims it has a notarized promissory note, though the notary on the document denies ever seeing it.
[64] Nassani Investments does not appear on state or national business records, and their phone number is not in service.
[65] Loyola Law professor Jessica Levinson gave the following advice with regard to these legal situations that deal with fraud.
[66] You want to keep the status quo and make sure nothing changes, make sure nobody is harmed.
[67] and the biggest harm would come from an illegitimate sale of Graceland.
[68] A Tennessee court has barred any sale of the property until a hearing tomorrow.
[69] Elvis Presley Enterprises manages the property and says that any claim of foreclosure is fraudulent.
