[29] I moved here from L .A. And I have this studio, and I actually have two looms behind me. So it's two big looms that are looming right now.

[31] It's funny because I know so little about looms that it just looks like one giant loom.
[32] I can't see where one loom starts and the other one begins, but it's very impressive and very cool looking.

[34] Yeah, I'm a little obsessive about weaving.
[35] I love weaving, which is kind of insane.
[36] it's very it's a lot of equipment though that you need on this level okay let me ask a couple of questions quickly so um you use the loom your uh what would you call yourself you wouldn't say i'm a weaver what would you call yourself i would say i'm a weaver okay all right i didn't know if you preferred textile technician you know i just don't know what terms you prefer and i want to use the term you prefer.
[37] Yeah, I think Weaver is a good term.
[38] I would introduce myself as, hello, I'm a weaver.
[39] Okay.
[40] I think a textile technician is more so, because I'm also a textile engineer in my day -to -day normal life.
[41] Okay.
[42] And the technicians are the ones that operate kind of big machines.
[43] I do that too.
[44] You do that as well.
[45] But this is you, this is more of you in your hobby phase, would you say?
[46] because you've got this giant loom behind you that looks very old school.
[47] You're wearing a very beautiful, colorful scarf, I believe, or a blanket.

[50] I don't know exactly what it is, but it looks gorgeous.

[58] But yeah, I wouldn't necessarily say I'm a hobbyist either.
[59] I went to school for weaving for textiles and I am very, very obsessed about textiles.
[60] If I could be successful in this, then this would be my life.
[61] And I wouldn't need the day thing.
[62] Well, I think when you describe yourself as obsessed, that is the key to being really good at something.
[63] I would hope so.
[64] Yeah.
[65] So the fact that you're obsessed with weaving probably means you are pretty good at it.
[66] And I don't even know, I don't even, I can't even begin to know.
[67] know what goes into setting up a loom because they look impossibly complicated.
[68] The loom behind you, just the idea that you would know how to put the different, you use yarn, is that correct?
[69] Mm -hmm.

[71] See, I know some things.
[72] You use different colored yarns and then you have to figure out how they interlock using the loom.
[73] Is that right?
[74] That's the most fun part.
[75] That part is what gets my brain just, like, so happy.
[76] But what's really cool about weaving is that weaving is actually the origin of modern computing.

[84] Is there another use for a computer or a loom?
[85] Many times I've seen a loom and I've tried.

[91] And I, I not only apologize to you, I apologize to the weaving community and everyone in textiles.

[95] So what do you mean the loom was the beginning of the computer?
[96] So you, in what you're talking about, how the threads interlock with each other, you either are lifting the thread or lowering the thread.
[97] one or zero.
[98] So, it's binary.
[99] Binary.
[100] The punch card system was invented by a weaver.
[101] I actually have this thing right there is essentially a punch card.
[102] And this modern technology computing was invented from the operation of weaving.
[103] I mean, I did not know that.
[104] And it makes perfect sense.
[105] It's binary.
[106] It's this or that.
[107] And then you need a menu, you need something to tell you what the sequence is, and you work off of that.
[108] And I didn't know that the punch card, which basically was what I, you know, when I was a kid, you know, on the time I'm being born, 63, 64, 65, all computers work off of a punch card until we move beyond that.
[109] But that's amazing.
[110] Yeah, it's so cool.
[111] I'm like, I'm just so obsessed with that.
[112] I've been really focused because I'm also, I have a solo show opening in a week from now.
[113] So I've just been in here every day weaving.

[170] I went to art school for weaving, so I've been doing that.
[171] But there are competitive weaving, actually.
[172] There is a sheep and wool festival where every year they have a sheep -to -shall competition of how fast you can shear sheep, get the wool, spin the yarn, make a shawl.
[173] Does anyone ever win really quickly, but then they realize that the sheep is pretty much just wrapped around the person's neck?
[174] They didn't fully shear it?
[175] They kind of half -sheared it, and then they're, and meh, shh, quiet, quiet, we've, we almost won.
[176] Is there juicing in looming competitions?
[177] Yeah, can you juice?
[178] Can you inject yourself with something that makes you operate the loom so much faster?
[179] Yeah.
[180] Um, I don't know.
[181] That's a really good question.
[182] Do they drug test in looming competitions?
[183] I can't answer that question.

[188] My loom actually, the one in the back, has a computer attached to it.
[189] So my loom actually is faster than that of the normal weaver.

[239] Well, I mean, I try to be a good person I know, I know.

[272] I see I wonder if there's those weavers who walk into a room and people are like oh shit that guy's here who is the shit in your energy and in your industry and Julia it might be you right and be honest if it's you you can say you can say okay so I did go to digital weaving conference last year and there are some weavers that walked in and I was like holy shit that's crazy like they're here this person's here that's on their other wevers that's Mortimer chilling I would say I'm working towards that status I'm really trying I think you're getting there fast And actually I think this interview is going to give you a little nudge Yeah do you have like a big social media presence With your weaving inside Yeah where can we see it I'm trying It's a U -L -I -A -K -W is my Instagram But I mean I'm really just trying to like Yeah I think that when it comes to the competitive part I am pretty competitive I can sense that I want to make fabric I want to make fabric that the best weaver that I could imagine wouldn't be able to figure out how I made the fabric So you want the best weaver let's say the the Oppenheimer of weavers Mortimer guy you're talking about Mortimer Chillings you want him you want to make something where Mortimer Mort to his fans Mortchillings comes in and you've made it and he picks it up And he's like, what?
[273] Impossible.
[274] But how?
[275] I don't see the, it's switching from double, triple half stitch to multi -drop stitch within two parsecs.
[276] Is that?
[277] You want to do that, right?
[278] Yeah, I kind of do.
[279] It's like a little embarrassing because I want to support people weaving, but then I also want to be like, and foreharness, okay.
[280] And be the best at the same time.
[281] Julia, there is nothing wrong with a burning ambition to be the very best at what you do and to blow people away and be it.
[282] There's nothing wrong with that.
[283] That is the fuel.
[284] It should ruin all your relationships and leave a scorched earth policy.

[286] I'm a very lonely man in many ways, but I wouldn't change a thing because when it comes to dancing like I have invisible strings on my hips in a monologue.

[310] Julia, there are other applications for your weaving that I'm told that you use.

[312] In these scientific.

[314] What would that be?
[315] Yes.
[316] So, I am a tech cell engineer for biomedical, implantable textile devices.
[317] I don't even know what that is.
[318] My God.
[319] You put a sweater around my heart?
[320] Get this man to put a cardigan over this man's heart.
[321] A sweater over your heart?
[322] You are human.
[323] I am human, yeah.
[324] But like actually, though, like stents, heart valves, bone tethers, meshes, all of that.
[325] There's all sorts of, like, there's a heart valve that, like, knitted fabric actually helps kind of accept cells that need to, like, stabilize the medical device in your body.
[326] And woven fabric really helps to kind of, like, if, you know, you have a, what is it, the abdominal aortic aneurysm, if you're, if you got too much cholesterol.
[327] or whatever, and you have an event in your heart.
[328] The woven fabric prevents the blood from getting stuck on the walls.
[329] So my question is, what are you using?
[330] You're obviously not using yarn.
[331] That's not going to go very well in there.
[332] But what can you use that the body won't reject?
[333] We do use yarn.
[334] It's just different yarn.
[335] It's not like wool or cotton.
[336] A lot of times it's polyester, actually.
[337] See, polyester is back.
[338] It's cool.
[339] It doesn't wrinkle I like it when my heart valve doesn't wrinkle Yeah Straight out of the dryer Yeah I can And stains just brush off Oh my God I like when my stents Just as easily cleaned Julia you're an impressive person Yeah You are It's very cool that you know how to do all this And I do not I do not think you should feel Any reservation about being Competitive and wanting to be The Badass Weaver In the United States of America America first and then the world.
