[3] I'm Daily Wire, editor -in -chief John Bickley with Georgia Howl.
[4] It's Thursday, April 11th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
[5] O .J. Simpson, former NFL running back, who was acquitted in the 1994 murder of his ex -wife and her friend, has died after a battle with cancer.
[6] was 76.
[7] Here with more as Daily Wire culture reporter, Megan Basham.
[8] Simpson, also known as the juice, broke records as a football player in both the NFL and college.
[9] He went on to be a sportscaster, movie star, and even a corporate spokesman for Hertz rental cars.
[10] All that came to a screeching halt in June of 1994 when Nicole Brown Simpson, his ex -wife and her friend Ron Goldman were found stabbed to death outside her L .A. home.
[11] Just days later, nearly 100 million people watched live as Simpson's White Ford Bronco led L .A. police on a two -hour -long car chase as he tried to evade arrest for the murders.
[12] He ultimately surrendered and stood trial.
[13] But in October 1995, Simpson was acquitted.
[14] The televised trial lasted 11 months and became an international sensation.
[15] His family confirmed his death in a statement this morning, but they did not specify the type or severity of the cancer.
[16] Long time journalist Catherine Harage spoke today before the House Judiciary Committee in a hearing on fighting for free press.
[17] Harage lit up her former employer CBS News over her firing and the network's effort to keep files belonging to her, which contained confidential source information.
[18] Harage was a senior investigative correspondent at the network and was known for covering national security issues and more recently investigations into Joe, and Hunter Biden.
[19] Her firing became controversial after reports claimed CBS confiscated her items and documents upon her termination.
[20] Here's a bit from her opening statement.
[21] The First Amendment, the protection of confidential sources, and a free press are my guiding principles.
[22] They are my North Star.
[23] When I was laid off in February, an incident reinforced in my mind the importance of protecting confidential sources.
[24] CBS News locked me out of the building and seized hundreds of pages of my reporting files, including confidential source information.
[25] Multiple sources said they were concerned that by working with me to expose government corruption and misconduct, they would be identified and exposed.
[26] At first, CBS denied the allegations, but eventually admitted to returning her items after her union, SAG AFRA, got involved.
[27] This all comes as Harage is also appealing a judge's decision to hold her in contempt for refusing to reveal her source and reports on a scientist alleged ties to China's military.
[28] Here's Herodge again.
[29] I have complete respect for the federal court and the judicial process, and I'm not here to litigate the case.
[30] But the fact that I have been fighting in the courts for two years and that I am now facing potentially crippling fines of $800 a day to protect my reporting sources, scores the vital importance of the press act.
[31] Several people were injured after shots were fired during a Philadelphia celebration yesterday marking the end of Ramadan.
[32] Police say two factions began shooting at one another, firing about 30 shots total.
[33] A 22 -year -old was hit in the stomach during the gunfire and a juvenile was shot in the hand.
[34] The event was attended by approximately 1 ,000 people.
[35] Police also say an officer shot an armed 15 -year -old whom she then personally transported to the hospital.
[36] Here's the police chief commending the action taken by that officer.
[37] The bravery that she's explained and the valor that she's been played by taking not only engaging the individual, but also recognizing that she had a child in front of her and did her due diligence to put him in their car and transport a hospital.
[38] It's a testament to the men and women who work for me. So far, five people have been arrested in connection with the shooting.
[39] The Senate has voted in favor of a bill that reverses the Biden administration's actions mandating states to track and set reduction goals for greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.
[40] The Chamber approved the resolution on Wednesday in a vote of 53 to 47, in which several liberal senators joined every Republican in voting for it.
[41] The bill now faces a vote in the House where a similar bill was introduced.
[42] The White House issued a statement ahead of the vote Wednesday saying Biden would veto the bill if passed.
[43] An Arkansas federal appeals court heard arguments today over whether or not to reinstate a first -in -the -nation ban on transgender medical treatments for minors.
[44] Arguments focused on whether the ban in question discriminates on the basis of sex.
[45] This comes a year after a judge struck down the ban as unconstitutional.
[46] The law seeks to prohibit medical professionals from prescribing transgender hormone treatments such as puberty blockers to anyone under the age of 18.
[47] And Virginia Governor Glenn Yunkin vetoed a bill this week aimed at expanding the use of ranked choice voting in the state's elections.
[48] Under -ranked choice voting, voters rank candidates in order of preference.
[49] Then if no candidate gets a majority, the last place finisher is eliminated, and the votes for the second -choice candidates are then counted.
[50] The process continues until one candidate receives a majority of votes.
[51] And as veto, Junkin, raised concern about the voting methods' use in general elections, saying some voters have found it to be confusing.
