[3] I'm Georgia Howe.
[4] It's Monday, July 15th.
[5] And this week, I'll be reporting from studio while John, Cabot, Megan, and others from our team will be reporting from the RNC in Milwaukee.
[6] We'll be dropping interviews throughout the week as part of our RNC extras series.
[7] And now for your Morning Wire afternoon update.
[8] Donald Trump has selected Ohio Senator J .D. Vance as his running mate.
[9] Vance, long considered a frontrunner in the Veep Stakes, is expected to shore up support across the GOP and with blue -collar workers, but may struggle to reach disaffected Democrats and independence.
[10] Vance, who served in the Marine Corps, studied political science and philosophy at Ohio State University and law at Yale University.
[11] He worked in both technology and finance before rising to prominence in 2016 after publishing Hillbilly Elegy, a memoir about his family roots in Appalachia.
[12] Vance was critical of Trump during the 2016 election, but walked back his criticisms, eventually gaining Trump's endorsement during his 2022 Senate race.
[13] In his announcement on Truth Social, the former president said, quote, as vice president, J .D. will continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our troops, and will do everything he can to help me make America great again.
[14] In more Trump news, a federal judge dismissed the classified documents case against Donald Trump today in a huge, victory for the former president.
[15] Here with the details is Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce.
[16] U .S. District Judge Eileen Cannon, who was appointed by Trump in 2020, ruled that Attorney General Merrick Garland had unlawfully appointed Special Counsel Jack Smith.
[17] Cannon said that the Attorney General does not have the power to appoint an inferior officer as special counsel, and that Congress never authorized funding for Smith's investigation.
[18] Without an appeal, the ruling could toss 40 felony counts alleging Trump unlawfully kept classified material from the White House.
[19] The ruling also delays a separate case brought by Smith over the 2020 election.
[20] Trump championed the decision on social media, writing, quote, this dismissal of the lawless indictment in Florida should be just the first step, followed quickly by the dismissal of all the witch hunts.
[21] The Biden administration has granted U .S. Secret Service Protection for independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Kennedy has long sought secret service protection, but until recently had been denied.
[22] His concerns were substantiated by the attempted assassination of Donald Trump over the weekend.
[23] Trump himself advocated for Kennedy's request earlier this morning, writing on truth social, quote, given the history of the Kennedy family, this is the obvious right thing to do.
[24] A bipartisan coalition of lawmakers reportedly plan to introduce a bill that would increase secret service protection for Biden, Trump, and Kennedy ahead of the November 5th election.
[25] Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said earlier today that Saturday's shooting at Donald Trump's campaign rally in Pennsylvania marked a failure of security.
[26] The United States Secret Service, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security, has been heavily scrutinized for allowing the shooter to gain access to a roof around 140 yards from the stage where Trump was delivering his remarks.
[27] While the FBI is leading the official investigation into the assassination attempt, Majorcas reiterated that there will also be an independent DHS investigation.
[28] We will carefully analyze in an independent and thorough fashion what occurred, recommendations will be made.
[29] Those recommendations will be implemented.
[30] Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheeto also released a statement today saying that the agency will participate fully in the investigation and will work with Congress on any oversight action.
[31] Cheetahle has been asked by the House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer to testify at a public hearing on July 22nd.

[35] Rust actor Alec Baldwin's three -year -long legal saga concluded over the weekend with a district judge dismissing his involuntary manslaughter case.
[36] Baldwin was on trial for the 2021 shooting of cinematographer Helena Hutchins.
[37] New Mexico judge Mary Marlow Sommer tossed the case after discovering prosecutors had suppressed evidence, specifically ammunition that a witness had turned over to the state but was not entered into the case file or revealed to the defense.
[38] Prosecutors said they believed the ammunition did not have evidentiary value in the case, but upon examining the evidence herself, Judge Sommer disagreed.
[39] The state's willful withholding of this information was intentional and deliberate.
[40] If this conduct does not rise to the level of bad faith, it certainly comes so near to bad faith as to show signs of scorching.
[41] Prejudice.
[42] The case was dismissed with prejudice, meaning Baldwin cannot be charged again over Hutchins' death.
[43] Top Chinese officials are holding a critical meeting on the economy this week after months of delay and looming financial crisis.
[44] Here with the details is Daily Wire Senior Editor Joel Needler.
[45] Almost 400 Chinese Communist Party officials, including leader Xi Jinping, are meeting in Beijing for a week -long economic overhaul.
[46] This kind of discussion is known as the third plenum and occurs every five years, often signaling vast economic reforms and policy directives.
[47] The meetings held behind closed.
[48] doors come in the wake of reports showing China's economic growth has sharply slowed.
[49] China has the second largest economy in the world behind the United States, but is suffering from an imploded housing market, trillions in local government debt, waning consumer demand, and skittish investors, not to mention friction with Western countries.
[50] Texas Governor Greg Abbott is demanding an investigation into the power company that services the Houston area for their slow response to restoring power after Hurricane Barrel.
[51] Nearly 300 ,000 homes and businesses have been without power since July 8th.
[52] The failure of power companies to provide power to their customers is completely unacceptable.
[53] Power companies along the Gulf Coast must be prepared to deal with hurricanes.
[54] And two of the top international soccer tournaments wrapped up yesterday.
[55] Argentina won South America's Copa America tournament over Colombia, though their record 16th title was overshadowed by crowd control issues.
[56] The game was delayed almost an hour and a half as thousands of unticketed fans pushed through the gates, hopped fences, and even crawled through vents to enter the stadium.
[57] In the European Football Championship, Spain topped England to secure their fourth title, which was also a record for that team.
