[4] But there's a mystery hanging over everyone.

[5] Who killed Saz?

[8] This season, murder hits close to home.

[9] With a threat against one of their own, the stakes are higher than ever.

[10] Plus, the gang is going to Hollywood to turn their podcast into a major movie.

[11] Amid the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles, more mysteries and twists arise.

[12] Who knows what will happen once the cameras start to roll?

[13] Get ready for the stariest season yet with Merrill Streep, Zach Alfenakis, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, Melissa McCarthy, DeVine, Joy Randolph, Molly Shannon, and more.

[14] Only Martyrs in the Building, premieres August 27th, streaming only on Hulu.

[15] Goodbye.

[16] Are we recording?

[17] Sweet.

[18] Let's start this, Mother.

[19] Hi.

[20] Hey.

[21] We're in a hotel room that looks like it could be in The Shining.

[22] Yeah, this is like the smallest conference room.

[23] This is like a child's conference room.

[24] Yes.

[25] Also, this is my favorite murder.

[26] Oh, hi, the minisode.

[27] We're doing a minisode on the road.

[28] Yeah.

[29] Well, but we're downtown Los Angeles.

[30] I mean, we're at Podfest, L .A. Podfest.

[31] Yeah.

[32] It'll be over by the time you hear this.

[33] It was great.

[34] Everybody killed it.

[35] Thanks for coming.

[36] So many people.

[37] Met so many lovely people.

[38] We really did.

[39] This is the episode where we read you back your hometown murders that you email us at Method Murder at Gmail.

[40] And this week we're doing it in a room that is the true color of mustard in the worst way possible.

[41] This was last painted in 1974, I will guess.

[42] Yes.

[43] So we've got a deep French's situation happening.

[44] And I'm pretty sure the carpet is going to give me a seizure.

[45] from its busyness.

[46] Are we in Twin Peaks or The Shining?

[47] This is a hybrid.

[48] Crossover.

[49] Kind of like today's marijuana, where they have taken the worst of two things and combine them to give you a heart attack.

[50] Listen.

[51] Look and listen to things that you can't see.

[52] Let us describe it in vivid detail for you.

[53] Have you ever had a bird shit on your car and there is, yes, it's black, yes, it's white.

[54] there's a very, very tiny, like, light strand of yellow, that's the color of these walls.

[55] It's the kind of thing where when you cut into an egg at a shitty diner, you're like, that's not the right color of egg yolk.

[56] Yeah, but somebody that designs rooms at this hotel was like, that's exactly the right color.

[57] That's the one.

[58] It goes great with the burgundy and tan carpet.

[59] With kind of like leafy medallions, like somebody's getting a carpeting award, but it's on the ground, and it's permanently.

[60] You never actually get it.

[61] You just have to look down.

[62] I mean, let's be, at least Stevens here.

[63] And we can just...

[64] Stephen gaze upon him.

[65] Stephen secured this room for us.

[66] And so, of course, we're eternally grateful and in no way have a lack of gratitude.

[67] It's not totally his fault.

[68] What if the designer here at the Biltmore Hotel is a listener?

[69] And she is weeping openly right now.

[70] Because she's like, that color mustard was the pantone color of the year in 2007.

[71] she's a ghost A she was a ghost when she designed this room which means she sees in black and white so she doesn't even know what color this is she's like a dog she picked these beautiful she said let's not go with natural lighting let's go with fluorescent got to go fluorescent if you're in a conference room listen fluorescent fucking recessed lighting this is like the smallest bat mitzvah ever thrown for any Jewish definitely uh it's this is if you were an orphan jews you turn 14 and your distant aunt is like no we're going to the Biltmore but we only need one table but we want our own room one tiny table let's the other thing is there's one tiny table yeah this it barely holds the three of us and it's in a it's in a banquet room there's four chairs one is empty and it's for the ghost who design the ghost decorator they were like interviewing people and they're like well that first guy wearing the neckerchief seemed like he knew his stuff, but I like the lady you could see through.

[72] I'm going to give it to her.

[73] She needs a job.

[74] She looks hungry.

[75] All right, should we do this?

[76] Let's do it.

[77] Did you hear me belt directly into the microphone?

[78] Just now, because you did it very subtly.

[79] Thank you.

[80] I was a ghost burp.

[81] We just went, we just went to tender greens.

[82] Tender greens for when you want to belge.

[83] This is just a short ad.

[84] Okay, ready?

[85] This first one says the subject line is buck eyes and nursing ghost stories.

[86] Stephen?

[87] If this nursing ghost story is about a dead baby nursing, it's dead mother.

[88] I'm going to get really mad at you.

[89] No, he's shaking his head now.

[90] Okay.

[91] Hello, lovely ladies and nicely stashed Stephen.

[92] Parentheses and adorable animals.

[93] He's picking these now so that he gets complimented.

[94] Absolutely.

[95] Look at all of these.

[96] You can tell.

[97] Stephen.

[98] Stephen.

[99] Okay.

[100] It was such a pleasure to see all three of you in Detroit and I'm still on cloud nine from the meat and green.

[101] Why are you making fun of her?

[102] Oh, sorry, but it's kind of funny.

[103] Yeah.

[104] What are you?

[105] From the 60s.

[106] Anyway, she loves it.

[107] She loves when I give her shit.

[108] Okay.

[109] I'm a critical care nurse in a medical intensive care unit.

[110] Basically, critical care is where people are on life support and on continuous life -saving medications.

[111] Yay.

[112] In my hospital, which is approximately 1 ,400 beds, we account for 30 % of all hospital deaths and average a death a day.

[113] Oh, they should get better at their jobs well no I don't think they can that's not the point it's at a certain point there's no getting around it between death and dying and being a murderer now I have some odd dinner topics oh love her considering how many deaths we've had needless to say there's been some odd things that have happened we had a patient whose last name was I Zod changed uh name changed for medical privacy reasons oh so that's a fake name okay um I hope uh and was with us for three weeks the patient died in a not very pleasant way and the next patient in that room was talking to himself one of my fellow nurses went into the room and asked the new patient who he was talking to he pointed to one of the corners and said oh just my friend eyes on there was also one room which three different patients all said there are seven people in this room oh my god the patients were all admitted months apart from each other but the fact that they all said the same thing is just beyond crazy a handful of us feel like different rooms feel worse than others.

[114] Either the weight of the room feels heavy or there's a weird smell.

[115] Then tonight...

[116] Well, no shit.

[117] You're right.

[118] Then tonight, one of our alarms showed a dying heartbeat.

[119] A bunch of us ran into the room and realized the room was empty.

[120] Oh my God, this room just creeped me out of more.

[121] It's getting mustard ear in here.

[122] It was a great wave form, the heartbeat tracing on the monitor.

[123] So beep, beep.

[124] I just wanted to do that.

[125] You knew what I was talking about and I explained it anyway.

[126] Absolutely.

[127] No, no, no. You got to.

[128] But no one was attached to it.

[129] What?

[130] Uh -huh.

[131] That happened three different times.

[132] My husband and I are huge comedy nerds.

[133] Every time you bring up Joe to Rosa, I always chuckle.

[134] We talked to him for a little bit last year during the Edberg Fringe Festival because he recognized my husband.

[135] I appreciate all three of you so much.

[136] Say sexy.

[137] Do your advanced directives and watch out for spirits in a critical care unit.

[138] Crystal in Cleveland.

[139] Crystal Cleveland.

[140] Oh, my God.

[141] that was scary beautiful I love it this room is haunted right it's haunted with that one blue sequence on the ground oh my god that fell off the bot mitzvah's dress that's the the clown that the bot mitzvah great aunt hired who murdered all of that okay okay here's one that was more ghosty really that was good that was a ghosty a good ghosty Stephen all right this is just okay here we go hello I just started listening to my favorite murder podcast, and I love it.

[142] In the first few episodes, you ask listeners to send murder stories.

[143] Oh, guess what, Olivia?

[144] We keep doing it.

[145] Yeah, it happens the whole time.

[146] From their hometowns.

[147] I'm not sure if you're still doing that.

[148] Oh, this bitch hasn't listened at all.

[149] Girl, you listened to one and got out.

[150] I thought I would send a few over.

[151] Let's just go right to this one.

[152] Near the town where my dad grew up, about 15 minutes away from where I live now, there was a serial killer who murdered two women in the 80s.

[153] His name is James.

[154] His name is James Kodak.

[155] He had been previously arrested for the murder of his roommate when he lived in Florida.

[156] After 11 years, he got out of jail and moved to Morristown, New Jersey.

[157] And two months after moving, he murdered Amy Hoffman.

[158] She had been kidnapped from a shopping mall and stabbed.

[159] Her body was found in a water tower.

[160] 12 days later, Deirdre O 'Brien, who had gone to school with my dad and aunts, was kidnapped from her car and stabbed.

[161] I believe Kodach put sirens on his car and pretended to be a police officer pulling her over.

[162] hate that one not fair not fair uh codatch i don't know if i'm even saying that close to right but i'm i sound confident about it that's all that matters yeah he was arrested after he cut himself and went to the police claiming that the man who was murdering women in town to tried to kill him what the fucking how about how about just stay away from the police station yeah i mean i don't want to give him advice on how to not get caught no that would be a bad idea but still that's that's how bossy and controlling I am.

[163] I even want to give people advice on how to not get caught being a serial killer.

[164] I want to tell you why you're wrong for having been caught.

[165] That's right.

[166] Even though I want you to get caught.

[167] I just see it so clearly that I feel like you would benefit from my wisdom.

[168] Everyone needs to take our advice.

[169] Yeah.

[170] The police instantly knew something was off, you think?

[171] And quickly realized, Kodach, Koditch was murdered, had murdered the two women.

[172] My mom also grew up in the area and remembers not being allowed to go out at night while this was happening.

[173] Wow.

[174] My dad worked at the gas station and the air.

[175] area during high school.

[176] After Kodach was arrested, he realized that he had been buying cigarettes from him at this gas station on a relatively consistent basis.

[177] Not sure how to end this email with the subject matter this dark.

[178] Well, I hope you enjoy, question mark.

[179] My hometown murders.

[180] I'm going to love your podcast, Olivia.

[181] Olivia, it's not, first of all, yes, we did, I mean, the word isn't in joy, but what it is is, holy shit.

[182] We're holy shitting along with you.

[183] Yeah.

[184] Isn't it weird how many serial killers you've never heard of?

[185] Yes, because there's so many.

[186] So many.

[187] But also, I would say this.

[188] Isn't serial killer?

[189] Yeah.

[190] It's three or more?

[191] Yeah.

[192] He almost made it.

[193] He could have done it.

[194] He's just a plain old lunatic.

[195] He would have done it if he didn't slit his own wrists or whatever.

[196] That's right.

[197] If he didn't get his weird plan of trying to make himself look like a victim?

[198] Yeah.

[199] You nut.

[200] Okay.

[201] The subject line of this one is Bernardo plus Hamulka plus six.

[202] degrees of Kevin Bacon.

[203] Hello, MFM family, smiley face icon made with punctuation.

[204] I attended the live show in Toronto last night and was blown away by your coverage of the Bernardo Homolka story.

[205] Oh, that was mine.

[206] Oh, I remember.

[207] One which is so well known in Canada, it's hard to believe there was more to learn from it, but during your show I did.

[208] Well, that's the ultimate compliment.

[209] Yeah.

[210] Because the reason I was redoing it is because I fucked it up so badly the first time.

[211] that means the world.

[212] The fact that you told them stuff that they don't know after having followed this case for like a decade.

[213] Oh my God.

[214] How rewarding.

[215] Compliment.

[216] Almost makes me think I should do research all the time.

[217] I thought a very interesting bit was when you mentioned at the end that Carlo Hulke took on the assumed name of Leanne Teal.

[218] That's interesting and extremely creepy because both Bernardo and Homulka adopted the teal name either right after they married or just before Bernard.

[219]'s trial, Bernardo adopted that from a little known movie starring Kevin Bacon.

[220] I do know this movie entitled Criminal Law.

[221] Did you ever see it?

[222] Also starring, it's from 1988, also starring Gary Oldman, who knew there was six degrees of Kevin Bacon with the Bernardo Homo murders.

[223] Oh my God.

[224] I think the fact that Homo re -adopted the name after she was freed is extra creepy and a nod to the fact that she definitely had no problem participating in the murders.

[225] This article also described Paul Bernardo's attempt to.

[226] to release self -published books via Amazon and the immediate backlash that happened when he did that.

[227] Oh, she included a live link.

[228] I think that's what she's talking about, the article.

[229] One more thing.

[230] Stacey Mae Fowles is a fantastic writer.

[231] That's the girl that I did the quote from who wrote that great article.

[232] I was unaware you mentioned it that she had written that article in the Walrus, but came to know her from her other writings, her Twitter account, and her newly released book, Baseball Life Advice, which chronicles her journey through depression and anxiety and how she alleviated that via following baseball in the Toronto Blue Jays specifically.

[233] It's a great read I thought you should know.

[234] That's awesome.

[235] As always, thank you for everything you do in your amazing show last night, SSDGM, Adam.

[236] You know, it's so interesting about the teal thing that he's mentioning now that we know is that she was giving a message to him.

[237] To him.

[238] To him.

[239] For sure.

[240] That's like doing an inside joke.

[241] they she broke up with him she was like I want nothing to do with him I had nothing he made me do these murders yeah you know she had to show that to the public no she was like inside joke inside fucking joke and also that actually is such a good movie it's along the lines of um presumed innocent the Harrison Ford movie where you really don't know you are being led to believe that Kevin Bacon is this evil murderer don't don't tell anyone else okay I'm gonna watch it it's really good It's just one of those, like, you kind of don't know what's going on the whole time.

[242] And it's really good.

[243] Love it.

[244] But also, yeah, that's fucked up.

[245] Because they basically, that's being like, I'm going to move to Montreal and change my name to Clary Starling.

[246] Yeah.

[247] I mean, but that's what it is.

[248] But it's like, because my ex will know.

[249] Ew.

[250] Grotty.

[251] They just continued to disgust all these years later.

[252] But she's, the worst part is she's out of prison.

[253] That's right.

[254] All right.

[255] this is called fingerprint dust date night Detroit What did you Sorry?

[256] Fingerprint dust date night Oh Don't know what that's going to mean I'm loving it Hello ladies Stephen and adorable animals We're on to you Stephen I'm a huge fan of your podcast Not only for bringing true crime Founds out of the shadows But for your hilarious commentary Support of Friendship and honesty about your struggles With mental health and addiction Nope she wrote addition Your mental health and addition Oh, all those additions you keep putting on your apartment?

[257] Well, we always say how bad we are of math.

[258] So she's not wrong.

[259] My idea is like, it's the Winchester Mystery House where we just keep building additions.

[260] Additions.

[261] And we don't know subtraction.

[262] And we cannot add.

[263] As someone who is trying to be open about my own troubles with mental health hearing, each episode brings me a feeling of solidarity.

[264] I have to say that I love Stephen's voice too, smiley face.

[265] Stephen, stop adding shit in.

[266] Tina Belcher, get on that mic and let people hear your voice.

[267] She doesn't have one.

[268] Sexy!

[269] The sexiest.

[270] My interest in true crime started a fairly young age, thanks to my father.

[271] My dad, well, an amazing man, did not always know how to filter or word things for kids.

[272] Even now, I have to remind him that NCIS and Blue Bloods aren't really age -appropriate viewing material for my five -year -old.

[273] Yeah, not really.

[274] My grandfather was a mounted police officer in Detroit.

[275] Oh, and my father always wanted to follow in his footsteps.

[276] In 1967, while in college, my dad was hired as a campus police officer for Eastern Michigan University.

[277] During the co -ed murders in Ipsilante, the various police forces banded together to try to locate the serial killer, later found to be John Norman Collins.

[278] There's a great book called Michigan murders about this whole case.

[279] It's really good.

[280] My dad was a very eager officer and was thrilled.

[281] to join the investigation.

[282] Due to his hardworking nature, as well as my dad's physical appearance and age, the police officers felt that he could be very helpful in undercover operations.

[283] When Collins was arrested for Karen Sue Benaman's murder, the police believed that he had an accomplice, Andrew, Julian Manuel, who was on the run.

[284] In an effort to trap that accomplice, my father was assigned to live in John Norman, she wrote John Normal Collins' apartment undercover in hopes of catching the accomplice when he returned, as he lived in the same boarding house.

[285] My mother remembers helping my father pack up Collins' belongings and cleaning up the fingerprint dust that still remained from the investigation.

[286] I have to say, the thought of my dad living undercover for several months, in an effort to catch a murderer, always blows me away.

[287] I didn't know that that happened in the case.

[288] That's amazing.

[289] My dad's stories of his time as a police officer during college fascinated me, and this interest in Don Norman Collins is what spread to a larger interest in true crime.

[290] My aunt who went to the same college at the time actually met Collins.

[291] At one point, he had given her roommate a ride on his motorcycle, which is one of the ways he got women to come with him and killed them and offered my aunt a ride as well.

[292] My aunt specifically remembered the look in his eyes made her uncomfortable.

[293] And despite his attractiveness, because he was super fucking hot.

[294] That's what I was just going to say.

[295] He was the hot guy, right?

[296] Dude, so hot.

[297] Yeah.

[298] She declined.

[299] Politely, I believe.

[300] No full fuck politeness needed.

[301] Later is discovered that Collins often offered girls' rides, as a way to abduct them.

[302] So my aunt went with her gut, stayed sexy, and did not get murdered.

[303] Amazing.

[304] The picture of where John Normal Collins lived at the time of the last of the murders he committed was pictured in a recent book, Terran Ipsilani by Gregory Forner.

[305] The picture is attached.

[306] My dad and mom remember talking to the landlady about Collins often and she always swore up and down.

[307] Johnny was such a nice boy.

[308] Of course.

[309] Right.

[310] Anyway, sorry for the long hometown murder.

[311] I can't wait to see you guys this week in Detroit.

[312] I already happened.

[313] SSDGM, Katie.

[314] Oh, yeah.

[315] All right.

[316] Do we do one more?

[317] Yeah, let's do one more.

[318] Okay.

[319] Do we have a live guest?

[320] A guest just came in the door.

[321] Ghost.

[322] Okay.

[323] Karen, you know I'm all about vintage shopping.

[324] Absolutely.

[325] And when you say vintage, you mean when you physically drive to a store and actually purchase something with cash.

[326] Exactly.

[328] But did you know that they also power in -person sales?

[356] Get ready for the starry of season.

[357] Zinget with Merrill Streep, Zach Alfinacus, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, Melissa McCarthy, Davey, Joy Randolph, Molly Shannon, and more.

[358] Only murders in the building, premieres August 27th, streaming only on Hulu.

[359] Bye.

[360] Goodbye.

[361] All right.

[362] The subject line of this is a Toronto hometown.

[363] I worked with the Angel of Death when I was 15.

[364] Oh my God.

[365] Hi, gang.

[366] I got a wicked hometown murder about a serial killer nurse for y 'all.

[367] Where are you from?

[368] When I was 15, because that's Boston and that's the South.

[369] This person is actually from Toronto.

[370] She's from all over.

[371] That's right.

[372] She's an army brat.

[373] Yeah.

[374] Okay.

[375] When I was 15, I worked as a student nurse's aide at this super shady nursing home in Woodstock, Ontario.

[376] Cool.

[377] No, not the Woodstock.

[378] This one is the dairy capital of Canada.

[379] Same.

[380] That's what I was thinking of.

[381] Yeah.

[382] I love to learn.

[383] So there was this nurse at the home named Beth, Elizabeth, and then full name Elizabeth Wetlofer.

[384] And I worked with her from 20, 10 to 2013, which happened to be right smack dab in the middle of her active killing spree.

[385] In 2007, Beth started working at this nursing home, and in that first year, she tried to kill two old lady sisters by injecting them with insulin, but they survived.

[386] Apparently, it's pretty hard to accidentally overdose people with insulin, so it's pretty intentional if someone does administer a lethal dose.

[387] Between 2007 and 2014, she killed eight seniors and attempted to kill four more, along with two aggravated assaults from before, making her Canada's first female serial killer.

[388] During her confession, Beth said she felt that God was telling her to kill who to kill next, or that the seniors were mean and difficult, so she'd just kill them.

[389] Jesus Christ.

[390] Sorry, that's not, it's not funny.

[391] It's like, what are you talking about?

[392] Right.

[393] But I have a nervous reaction that when I'm very upset about things, I just start laughing.

[394] That's what this podcast is.

[395] That's why we're here.

[396] yeah okay great um so you're not mad at me oh my god no after she was killed after she killed she said she felt a cackling from the pit of hell that's in quotes within her and then in parentheses what the fuck does that even mean uh she apparently had confessed to the murders to a former girlfriend a pastor a lawyer a narcotics anonymous sponsor and a student nurse and no one did anything except to tell her to stop or pray for her or some shit sorry to give a advice again to fucking serial killers, but don't tell anyone.

[397] Right.

[398] I mean, and also, if you're going to tell someone because you want to be stopped, don't pick the lamest people in your life.

[399] Or the people who won't believe you.

[400] Yeah, or the people who kind of don't have the guts to do anything.

[401] And I'm just like, you should pray.

[402] You're so silly.

[403] What's her name, Margaret?

[404] You're so silly.

[405] What's her name, Margaret?

[406] What's her name Margaret?

[407] That sounds like a Margaret.

[408] but um okay so almost exactly one year ago today beth went to a mental health institution in toronto and fessed up for the sixth fucking time i might add and uh that she'd killed eight old people and they contacted the police beth pled guilty and immediately on oh pled guilty immediately and on june on june 26 2017 like this was three fucking months ago you guys it's crazy she was sentenced to eight concurrent life sentences in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years.

[409] Some other weird shit she did while she was actively killing.

[410] When asked if rumors about her being a murderer were true, Beth started, quote, laughing hysterically.

[411] As you do.

[412] Oh, and then it says in parentheses, cover Elvis's ears for this one.

[413] She offered to put down her neighbor's sick cat with a lethal dose of insulin.

[414] No, thanks.

[415] She says, parentheses, I'm a student.

[416] veterinarian, and this one makes me so sad.

[417] And then finally, she published some weird -ass poems online about a woman, quote, quenching her craze by stabbing someone to death, and another about how much she likes old people, quote, their wrinkles, their frailty, their smell knowing this is their last home.

[418] Ew, Margaret.

[419] Super fucked up, A. I also forgot to mention that Beth went to high school with my mom.

[420] Gotta love small towns, fuck politeness, and stay out of the forest, Amy.

[421] Oh, my God.

[422] That's super nuts.

[423] Margaret, stop killing people.

[424] Margaret, her name's Elizabeth.

[425] Elizabeth.

[426] Elizabeth Margaret.

[427] Stop killing people.

[428] Margaret is short for Elizabeth.

[429] I almost said, really?

[430] Jesus.

[431] I'm so gullible.

[432] I think that's it.

[433] Yeah, that's it.

[434] Send your hometowns to my favorite murder at Gmail.

[435] And stay sexy.

[436] And don't get murdered.

[437] Goodbye.

[438] Mustard.
