[5] right now.
[6] You just said there that the company was completely out of money, but I could tell that you also didn't believe it would fail, which is a bit of a contradiction to some degree.
[7] Well, because it was just money.
[8] Yeah, and you could figure that out.
[9] I don't know how.
[10] Yeah, but you know, money is just this, you know, okay, so if we got the money, and the hard bit really is doing the doing, isn't it?
[11] It's building it.
[12] So I always just knew somehow this will work out.
[13] I mean, of course, you have the old terrible dark days.
[14] But I knew it was going to work out.
[15] How could it not?
[16] We were on to something, and I knew that.
[17] That level of optimism, upon reflection of your career of the last, you know, couple of decades, how important has that optimism been?
[18] That just like unexplainable, unjustifiable, I don't know why, but it'll all work out optimism.
[19] Because you've also, because you've employed a lot of people seeing the opposite, that sense of like catastrophe you know that catastrophizing oh no we're a fucked you know that kind oh yeah oh man I've kissed a lot of those fronts um yeah wouldn't you say that that's a common denominator you find in entrepreneurs 100 % I mean even in team members someone so I it's so I so I can't explain it enough one example I always come back to was um I was flying to Brazil.
[20] And Obama was speaking at the same time as me, um, on the same stage as me, just like speaking just after me. And I thought, well, Obama's here.
[21] I'm a speaker.
[22] He's a speaker.
[23] Can't I meet him?
[24] And someone that was working for me at the time went, oh, no, I asked somebody and they said no. Sick as a fuck if they said no. Ask someone else and just keep asking.
[25] And then they're like, no, no, no, Steve, we've been asking it.
[26] And they just said no. So I was, I'll do it then.
[27] And I, I sent some emails.
[28] And within 30, uh, within 30 emails, someone comes and grabs me, goes, come and meet Obama.
[29] Yeah.
[30] And I just think there's always a way.
[31] There's always a way.
[32] And your life and my life is testament to this upset, this like, there is a way or there's a way.
[33] That's, you know what I mean?
[34] There's a way or I have to work harder.
[35] You know what I mean?
[36] And I don't allow for this other outcome, which is that, oh, no, we can't.
[37] I've never allowed for the other outcome ever.
[38] And it's actually my entire battery is powered by that.
[39] And I, am told I radiate it.
[40] So when you're around me, you get hooked onto that.
[41] And that can be a really good thing because it drives people in those dark days when actually the entire world is telling you no. And I'm saying yes.
[42] And so it's an amazing thing.
[43] And I think that optimism.
[44] And actually now, as I said, getting older, it's actually, I would say there's optimism.
[45] And now I also I have gratitude that's powering my battery.
[46] You know, I worked out my 40th birthday.
[47] I have 29 ,000 days on this planet.
[48] Because I'm, as another golden thread, I'm sure you recognize as efficiency.
[49] I'm frigging addicted to it.
[50] So I needed to know.
[51] So, you know, this life, I just need to schedule this a bit.
[52] So, you know, so I've got 29 ,000 days.
[53] Oh, shit, it's not 29 ,000 days.
[54] It's 14 ,000 days because I'm 40.
[55] Right.
[56] Okay.
[57] And so that.
[58] that has also led to a countdown till I die.
[59] So that also has fueled this optimism and fuck it mentality.
[60] Because if today I am going to change the world, which I can, it's even fueled even in a better way, actually.
[61] I didn't have that at Not in the High Street because that was just, you know, firefighting and optimism was that, that fuel.
[62] But now I think I have gratitude, powering that even more.
[63] And that's been in a beautiful, beautiful stage of my life.
[64] That is amazing.
[65] And you're right.
[66] So you're in survival mode.
[67] And now you're, now you've got choice.
[68] Now I've got choice and a bit of, you know, the battle scars are there.
[69] And I have an appreciation that, you know, I can give everything and all.
[70] But I need to make sure that my time on the planet is also for me too.
[71] because I do believe I'm here to serve.
[72] And again, I can only say that now in hindsight.
[73] But if I am here to serve, I need to also serve myself.
[74] That sense of, by the way, I completely resonate with this focus on the amount of time we have left.
[75] I wrote about it in my book at long length.
[76] And I think somewhere behind me there's a little sand timer.
[77] Somewhere on there, there's usually a sand timer.
[78] I don't know.
[79] It seems to walk around.
[80] But because I wrote about it in my book at such length, people started buying sound timers and uploading them online.
[81] And the whole point of the sound timer is it's one of the things that really allows me to, it reminds me of time.
[82] It's like one of the ways we can see time happening just by turning it.
[83] You see your life moving away.
[84] And it's that important reminder to just like get on with it and focus on what matters.
[85] You mentioned you now feel like you're here to serve.
[86] Mm -hmm.
[87] Do you think that comes from understanding your own power?
[88] Yeah, I think so.
[89] I think so.
[90] I would have found that really difficult to tell you 20 years ago.
[91] But now I have been through it and done it.
[92] And I also know that my optimism helps people.
[93] And I can see the effects.
[94] And I can see, you know, what we brought up and not in the high street was full of it.
[95] You know, I used to have people come in to the office from other businesses that we would hire.
[96] And they literally could feel it in the air.
[97] They were uncomfortable with it.
[98] It was optimistic.
[99] It was creative.
[100] It was emotional.
[101] And they were like, this place is so emotional.
[102] And I'm like, yeah.
[103] And they're like, we need to stop that.
[104] And I'm like, we're never stopping that.
[105] And I think that that's what I've realized is that that is what I can muster up.
[106] You know, I listen to one of my favorite songs is cloudbusting by Kate Bush.
[107] And when I listen to that song, I feel like I'm whipping up a storm and that is my power but what I try and whip up is very positive and good for the soul good for small businesses good for and what are small businesses they're founders with dreams you know I love that and so that is why I've written potentially that is now my job description for the rest of my life is to build something that I can pull that in and be efficient.
[108] And so amplify it, so not build an empire, but be really smart and amplify that feeling out to other people and help them.
