[5] As a Monday morning, Mount San Jacinto, California, California saw nearly 12 inches of rainfall.
[6] Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Public Health Department is warning beachgoers to stay out of the ocean for the next three days due to the potential for elevated levels of bacteria thanks to the storm.
[7] Officials say Palm Springs has received more than half a year's worth of rain.
[8] One resident detailed a dramatic scene to CBS.
[9] I have a friend who just saw a 60 -foot carport get blown off of his neighbor's house and carried four houses up.
[10] In Los Angeles, first responders continue to receive a large number of emergency calls related to the storm.
[11] During the 24 -hour period of August 20th, the 23, the LAFD responded to 1 ,833 emergency incidents.
[12] We received a total of 4 ,105 telephone calls to our 911 dispatch center, and this represents over 1 ,000 additional emergency phone calls than our normal average.
[13] Fortunately, we have yet.
[14] to receive any report of any significant injuries or damage related to the storm.
[15] Meanwhile, Nevada has deployed the National Guard to several locations as residents are advised to shelter in place.
[16] Tropical storm Hillary isn't the only natural disaster to hit Southern California on Sunday.
[17] A 5 .1 magnitude earthquake also hit that part of the state, though damage was minimal.
[18] President Biden visited the struggling island of Maui today as rescue workers continue to search for more than 800 individuals still missing after the wildfire killed at least 114 on the island.
[19] Both the local and federal response to the disaster have been under intense scrutiny.
[20] President Biden's team addressed the media today.
[21] Based on the updates and the communication that I have had with the president, he is satisfied with our response, but he will always push us to make sure that we are doing as much as we can and bring in more resources if needed to support this community.
[22] New data shows that violence under the new Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson is outpacing his immediate predecessors.
[23] According to the media outlet, Center Square, 38 more people have been shot and killed, 41, more murdered, and there have been more than 4 ,000 more motor vehicle thefts compared to Lori Lightfoot's first 90 days in office.
[24] In a recent interview with the local ABC7 affiliate, Johnson doubled down on his policing policies that focus on mental health to stop lawlessness.
[25] We've actually shifted a dynamic in the city of Chicago.
[26] As we prepare to confirm our next police superintendent, I don't know we've ever had a police superintendent talk about treatment, not trauma.
[27] Bill and Hillary Clinton's conference for the Clinton Global Initiative is taking place again this year.
[28] The CGI had taken a six -year hiatus but reconvened last year in New York City.
[29] This year it boasts a lineup of A -list actors and global leaders with the goal of pushing action on climate resilience, health, equity, and inclusive economic recovery and growth.
[30] Daily Wire researcher Michael Whitaker reports.
[31] The initiative will host a conference on September the 18th and 19th, focusing on, quote, climate change, health care issues, gender -based violence, the war in Ukraine, and other issues.
[32] According to the Associated Press, elites such as World Bank President Aja Banga, the Bahamas Prime Minister Philip E. Davis, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, World Central Kitchen founder Jose Andres, Ford Foundation CEO Darren Walker, and famous Hollywood celebrities such as Orlando Bloom, Matt Damon, and Ashley Judd will partake in the event.
[33] Officials in New York City are considering housing hundreds of illegal aliens in the jail where Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide.
[34] The Metropolitan Correctional Center, which closed after the convicted sex offenders' death, is among dozens of places being considered to house the more than 100 ,000 migrants who have arrived in the Big Apple over the past couple of years.
[35] So far, more than 200 locations around the sanctuary city are being used as shelters.
[36] New York Mayor Eric Adams continues to demand that the federal government provide more tax dollars toward the issue, while suggesting migrants may be housed in other parts of the state.
[37] This is a national and statewide issue that has been unjustly dropped into the lap of New York city resident.
[38] We only make up 0 .05 of the landmass in New York State.
[39] 0 .05.
[40] That's what we make up.
[41] Yet, we are housing over 99 % of the migrants.
[42] A New Jersey federal judge has ordered Starbucks to pay Shannon Phillips, a former regional director for the chain, an additional $2 .7 million after she sued the coffee chain for allegedly firing her because she is white.
[43] The lawsuit in firing came after an employee at a Starbucks location under her purview, called the police on two black men for loitering in the store in 2018.
[44] The two men accused Philadelphia police and the chain of racism, and Phillips was fired shortly after despite not being involved in the incident.
[45] The company promised to enact changes to confront racial bias, and Phillips claimed that her race was a determining factor in her firing as a result.
[46] The $2 .7 million comes after a Camden jury ordered Starbucks to pay Phillips $25 .6 million in settlement money following a trial in June.
