[1] It's Friday, November 4th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
[2] Representative Adam Schiff is getting prepared to run for the top House Democratic leadership spot should it be vacated by Speaker Nancy Pelosi following the midterms.
[3] Pelosi has not publicly stated that she would step down as the House Democratic leader, whether Democrats keep or lose the majority next week.
[4] A bill introduced by House Republicans on Thursday would push states to prioritize victim, of violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants.
[5] The Justice for Victims of Open Borders Act would change grant disbursement through the 1984 Victims of Crime Act, which provides funding to state and local programs to help crime victims rebuild their lives.
[6] Officials at Amazon say the company is pausing, hiring for its corporate workforce in an effort to cut costs amid worries about the wider economic environment.
[7] According to a memo from company executives, the pause could be in place for a few months.
[8] In economic news this week, on Thursday, the Labor Department reported that jobless claims dropped by 1 ,000 to 217 ,000 for the week ending in October 29th.
[9] There are currently 1 .9 job openings for every unemployed person, which is keeping wages high.
[10] There was a slight rise in layoffs in October, but overall layoffs are down by 16 % for the year.
[11] It should be.
[12] What I'm trying to do is make sure that our message is clear, which is that we think we have a ways to go.
[13] We have some ground to cover with interest rates before we get to, before we get to that level of interest rates that we think is sufficiently restrictive.
[14] There's no sense that, you know, that inflation is coming down.
[15] So I would also say it's premature to discuss pausing.
[16] We have a ways to go.
[17] A 29 -year -old homeless man was arrested in New York on Thursday in connection with the attack and rape of a 43 -year -old woman who is jogging along the Hudson River in a wealthy West Village neighborhood around 5 .30 a .m. The man has been arrested at least 18 times and is wanted for two more attempted rapes, one in October and one in April in both early morning attacks.
[18] The suspect was arrested later the same day trying to use his latest victim's credit cards at a Target store in Midtown.
[19] After years as a primetime lynchpin on CNN, Don Lemon debuted his new morning show on the network alongside co -host Poppy Harlow and Caitlin Collins.
[20] Despite significant promotion, the show garnered a disappointing 387 ,000 viewers, with only 71 ,000 in the most coveted 25 -54 demographic.
[21] Meanwhile, former Fox News anchor Shepard Smith's show at CNBC is being canceled, with the network's president, Casey Sullivan, saying the channel is having to, quote, make some difficult decisions.
[22] And all signs point to a very strong performance by GOP candidates on Tuesday.
[23] According to Gallup, current ratings of the U .S. economy and national satisfaction are at the lowest that Gallup has measured at the time of a midterm election over the life of these polling trends.
[24] Just 40 % of Americans approve of President Biden's handling of the job, and a mere 17 % say they're satisfied with the direction of the country, while just 14 % say the economy is excellent or good, and only 21 % approve of the job the democratically led Congress is doing.
