[1] It's Wednesday, March 29th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
[2] Pope Francis was hospitalized today with a lung infection, and, according to the Vatican, will remain admitted for several days of treatment.
[3] Vatican officials say the Pope does not have COVID.
[4] A spokesman said the 86 -year -old Pope had been suffering breathing troubles in recent days and went to the hospital for tests.
[5] The hospitalization was the first since Francis.
[6] had his colon removed in July of 2021.
[7] As Nashville still reels from the Covenant School shooting, details of heroic action taken by students, teachers, and staff are trickling in.
[8] In one instance, the late Dr. Catherine Coons, age 61, the head of the school, reportedly ran toward the shooter before she herself was gunned down.

[10] Coons is being praised for her bravery after a witness said she ran toward the shooter to stop her on Monday.
[11] According to Nashville councilman Ross Pulley, a witness said that Coons was on a Zoom call when she heard the first shot.
[12] She immediately ended the call, got up, and headed straight for the shooter.
[13] Police said Coons did what principals and headmasters do.
[14] She protected her children.
[15] Coons also prepared the children and staff with advanced -level active shooter drills.
[16] That training is also being credited with saving lives.
[17] On Saturday, a staffer for Senator Rand Paul was stabbed in broad daylight in Washington, D .C., allegedly by a former convict who was released from a city prison just days before.
[18] The staffer is expected to survive, but the attack highlights the growing crime trend in D .C. Congress held a previously scheduled hearing on crime in the city on Wednesday, hearing from city leaders as to what is behind the rising crime.
[19] Beginning in June of 2020, the D .C. Council began introducing anti -police legislation designed in their own words to, quote, listen to the voices of district residents and act accordingly to bend the arc of justice, end quote.
[20] Carjackings in the district have increased 105 % compared to this time last year.
[21] Total property crime is up 28%.
[22] Homicides are up 37 % since 2019.
[23] D .C. clearly has a crime crisis.
[24] Senator Paul released the following statement on the attack, quote, I ask you to join my wife Kelly and me in praying for a speedy and complete recovery and thanking our first responders, hospital staff, and police for their diligent actions.
[25] President Biden will reportedly seek stronger bank regulations in response to Silicon Valley banks collapse.
[26] But Republicans such as Senator Katie Britt of Alabama warn that rushing to give the federal government more power is premature.
[27] Here she is on Wednesday addressing Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Michael Barr during a hearing on the matter.
[28] I find it concerning, though, when you all were asked, would you like to see more powers, more strength?
[29] Every single one of you said yes.
[30] I think that's what people hate about Washington.
[31] We have a crisis and you come in here without knowing whether or not you did your job, you say you want more.
[32] The California legislature may prevent K -12 schools from suspending or expelling students who are drunk or high or in possession of illicit drugs or alcohol.

[34] The new bill argues that students shouldn't be expelled or suspended for being drunk or high on campus because, quote, high feelings of school connectedness can decrease drug use, indicating that students should remain in that school environment rather than being forced out in order to prevent further drug or alcohol use.
[35] The proposed ban is outlined in a bill that was unanimously approved by the Education Committee last week, and now heads to the Appropriations Committee.
[36] North Carolina lawmakers voted on Wednesday to repeal the permit requirement to buy a pistol overriding Democratic Governor Roy Cooper's veto.
[37] And Levi's has announced it will start using AI -generated fashion models as part of an effort to increase diversity.
[38] for online shoppers of the denim company's clothing.
[39] The company will partner with La La Land AI.
[40] The company says Levi's human models will not be replaced, but instead the AI will supplement them to create a more personal online shopping experience.
