[3] In 2011, something strange began to happen at a high school in upstate New York.
[4] A mystery illness, bizarre symptoms, and spreading fast.
[5] What's the answer?
[6] And what do you do if they tell you it's all in your head?
[7] Hysterical.

[9] Binge all episodes of hysterical early and ad -free on Wondery Plus.
[10] With this story, it's a little bit of a first for me. I've covered people with the abuser's real names in the past, but typically the abuser was either passed on or they're currently in prison.
[11] But after seeing how much evidence that these incredible women have come together and gathered and the ongoing conversations with them, I do support their desires, and I do believe that there's a lot of other victims out there that we don't know about yet.
[12] I'm hoping the podcast is really going to help surface, whatever needs to be surfaced, so that accountability can happen.
[13] I actually vividly remember meeting him.
[14] He looked like every other typical scene guy, tall, tatted up, worked in hair from the hardcore scene.
[15] I had been working with this band that he had also worked with throughout the years he was doing a lot of the protest stuff so I got an immediate impression of he's on the right side of things he started to go on tour with Justin Bieber he cut Justin's hair after the concert and then Justin fired him on the spot he partied a lot he did cocaine a lot I said are you seeing other people and he's like no And I said, well, my doctor tells me that you are.
[16] I start to panic.
[17] As we are barely getting in our car, I can see in my side view mirror Jake barreling down the road.
[18] He gets there and blocks us in.
[19] He starts punching my window.
[20] As hard as he can, he's punching it over and over again, and he's yelling, and he's enraged.
[21] And he's trying to break the window.
[22] Once Jake wanted something, he would get it come hell or high water.
[23] He was pissed.
[24] He blew up, threatened me. He flipped into a rage.
[25] He threatened to assault me. He grabbed me by my wrist and said, don't you fucking take that computer.
[26] That has pictures of my son on it.
[27] And he spit in my face.
[28] I looked up and he had his phone out and he was recording me. I was just like, what?
[29] What the fuck?
[30] You didn't ask?
[31] I truly believe that he is a psychopathic narcissist who gets off on deception.
[32] That is his main drive in life, is control over people.
[33] We start talking, comparing dates.
[34] It was a knife in the chest.
[35] It was all shocking.
[36] I knew this guy was bad news.
[37] I had no clue that he was capable of all of the things.
[38] a soulless shell of a person.
[39] How devoid of love and empathy can one person be?
[40] I think where his love and empathy should be, it's just been replaced with an obsession with power and control.
[41] I was just getting ready and walking out.
[42] I glanced up in his room and I was like, is that a camera?
[43] We were going back and forth of, yeah, like, I wish men came with warning labels.
[44] I wish that the next woman that was looking anything up on a social media could find a page that confirmed their suspicions early on.
[45] I was to find the Instagram.
[46] I felt scared that I had been so close to this monster.
[47] I wasn't surprised because abuse.
[48] Users tend to continue and escalate their abuse as the years go on.
[49] But I was not prepared about how horrific the abuse got.
[50] I was absolutely horrified.
[51] There was one woman who posted text messages between her and Jake.
[52] He was talking about how funny it is, the way he treats women.
[53] It makes me feel so good to make women feel awful.
[54] They're useless and I hate them.
[55] I never wanted to have sex with him.
[56] I would tell him no, but he would just continue pushing it and pushing it.
[57] I can't even imagine how much time and effort would be spent talking to all of those women.
[58] There must have been multiple people a day at that rate.
[59] I've heard so many accounts of other women finding out that he filmed them.
[60] It's pretty obvious looking back now, he forgot his wallet to get me into his apartment.
[61] She takes her to the hospital.
[62] Right away, they call the police and CPS.
[63] They were like, this is a child abuse case.
[64] He's not stopping.
[65] He's still on social media apps.
[66] Somebody saw him on a date recently.
[67] Disgusting to think he's still out there.
[68] He deserves jail time for the things he's done.
[69] We'll see what happens.
[70] Thank you for calling the FBI.
[71] May I please have your first and last name?
[72] Hello, my name is Tiffany Reese.

[76] She struck him with her motor vehicle.
[77] She had been under the influence and she left him there.
[78] In January 2022, local woman Karen Reid was implicated in the mysterious death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O 'Keefe.
[79] It was alleged that after an innocent night out for drinks with friends, Karen and John got into a lover's quarrel en route to the next location.
[80] What happens next?
[81] Depends on who you ask.
[82] Was it a crime of passion?
[83] If you believe the prosecution, it's because the evidence was so compelling.
[84] This was clearly an intentional act.
[85] And his cause of death was blunt force trauma with hypothermia.
[86] Or a corrupt police.
[87] cover -up.
[88] If you believe the defense theory, however, this was all a cover -up to prevent one of their own from going down.
[89] Everyone had an opinion, and after the 10 -week trial, the jury could not come to a unanimous decision.
[90] To end in a mistrial, it's just a confirmation of just how complicated this case is.
[91] Law and crime presents the most in -depth analysis to date of the sensational case in Karen.
