[1] So I have the privilege today of speaking with Adrian Grenier.
[2] He's an American actor, producer, director, and musician.
[3] Best known for his portrayal of Vincent Chase in the television series Entourage, which ran from 2004 to 2011.
[4] He's appeared in a variety of films, Drive Me Crazy at 1999, The Devil Wares Prada, 2006.
[5] Trash Fire, 2016, Marauders, 2016, has an extensive career acting.
[6] And so we walked through the development of his career from the time he was a street rat, basically, in New York City, through his education at LaGuardia High School, where he studied film and acting, and then through his choppy career, as an actor and not an all -in actor until the time he signed a contract with entourage and hit the road running.
[7] He became spectacularly successful as a consequence of that and had all the opportunities that go along with fame and fortune.
[8] And so we talked about that.
[9] We talked about radical shift that occurred in his life as a consequence of him disappointing the woman that he loved.
[10] and what that did to him and how that worked out.
[11] He's now married.
[12] He has a son.
[13] He's made a radical shift in his life.
[14] He's running a very interesting long -term experiment.
[15] He has some land outside of Austin, about 46 acres.
[16] He's trying to learn how to put some of the concerns he had on the environmentalist activist front into actual practice.
[17] And he's grown up.
[18] And that's what we talk about fundamentally.
[19] about the difference between being immature and between being mature and why the latter is actually an improvement.
[20] So you're welcome to come along for the ride.
[21] So where did you grow up, Adrian?
[22] Primarily in New York, New York City, Upper West Side.
[23] Yeah, I guess I moved there when I was about four years old.
[24] My mom moved me from New Mexico, where I was living with all my cousins and my family there.
[25] And then she sort of snatched me away and thrust me into the chaos of New York.
[26] And that's where I spent the rest of my life from about four to about 40, 42.
[27] Yeah, slugging it out on the streets in New York.
[28] So what did your mother do?
[29] My mother was a free -flowing flower child of the 60s and 70s.
[30] And she was, well, she was, she didn't just move to New York.
[31] She was really moving away from her situation in New Mexico, which I didn't understand at the time.
[32] Did she move alone?
[33] She moved, yeah, as a single mother.
[34] Okay, okay.
[35] Were you raised by a single mother?
[36] Okay.
[37] Single mother, only child in New York.
[38] And now, now being a father, I can't imagine what she must have been thinking.
[39] But I don't think she was thinking.
[40] I think she was just moving.
[41] It's a lot of work.
[42] Children are a lot of work.
[43] It's a hell of a thing to take on by yourself.
[44] Yeah.
[45] So what were you like as a little kid?
[46] When you moved to New York, what was it like for you?
[47] Yeah.
[48] It was rough, actually.
[49] I was a very sensitive kid, sweet, I would say, kind, gentle, shy.
[50] And, yeah, I think.
[51] Those sorts of things.
[52] What sort of school did you go to?
[53] So I would go either to public school or private school, depending on whether or not my mother, depending on who my mother was dating.
[54] So if she had a rich boyfriend, I'd go to private school, and then when she was dating other people, I'd go to public school.
[55] Did you change schools a lot?
[56] Fairly, yeah.
[57] I mean, I went to, one of my formative years, I went to Rudolph Steiner, which is like a Waldorf school.
[58] Yeah.
[59] formative, like very, very important in my development.
[60] How old were you when you did that?
[61] Second through fourth grade.
[62] And why was that particularly important for you?
[63] And I presume in a good way.
[64] I think so, yeah.
[65] It really helped to define my creativity and like lock in my ability to see the world, you know, not in a structured way, but to like really expand out into like my ability to be creative and non -linear.
[66] What happened after you went to the Waldorf school?
[67] So then my mom couldn't afford it, so she put, oh, no, what it was is the only drawback is they weren't teaching me how to read.
[68] So I was in fourth grade, and I still wasn't learning to read.
[69] And their philosophy is they'll learn when they're ready, and then it'll really take hold instead of forcing it.
[70] And so I wasn't learning to read.
[71] My mom got nervous.
[72] She had a lot of people whispering in her ear, So then she put me into a Catholic school with nuns, and they beat the reading into me, hardcore.
[73] Yeah, so I was there for a year, and I learned to read real quick.
[74] Did you learn to enjoy it?
[75] No. No, I learned, yeah, I mean, it wasn't enjoyable to feel pressured into it.
[76] I mean, they were pretty aggressive, those nuns, rulers and stuff.
[77] Mm -hmm.
[78] Yeah.
[79] Mm -hmm.
[80] when did you when did you start acting so i actually found acting when so i you know didn't grow up with my dad so i wasn't particularly sporty didn't have a lot of that uh at my disposal i was actually quite meek so in in sports teams that i often get bowled over or overlooked or benched and um but i found a lot of comfort in the creative arts so in theater and It was, you know, about how you were feeling, and it was a lot of camaraderie.
[81] And frankly, you could play in fantasy and, you know, put on different costumes and characters, which I took to quite well.
[82] As an after -school program, and I did that from sixth grade to high school.
[83] And then I went to LaGuardia High School, which was one of the specialized public schools in New York.
[84] where so there's bronch science and syveson and a number of other schools that you had to take tests to get into LaGuardia being one of them but that was focused on music art and performing arts so how old were you when you did that was high school so yeah um 16 50 oh oh oh oh I see oh like younger okay okay yeah you go in there it's when I first started learning how to dress myself you know pretty much you you go in a high school.
[85] And now it's like, oh, I can't wear what my mom bought me from the gap.
[86] I got to probably step it up a little bit, be a little cooler.
[87] So you were, you start, you started doing creative work seriously when you were something around 12 or 13.
[88] I read you done that before because you got into this high school.
[89] On what basis did they admit you?
[90] You audition.
[91] So, yeah, monologues and, you know, I got in.
[92] It's, you know, it's a hard, there's, you know, 3 ,000 kids or however many kids are.
[93] Are they still, is it still a selective school?
[94] school now?
[95] Do you know?
[96] Still is, yes.
[97] But, you know, 30 ,000 kids from the city audition, and they let in 100.
[98] So it was pretty competitive.
[99] That's for sure.
[100] Yeah.
[101] So what do you think gave you an edge?
[102] I don't know.
[103] I always had something, I guess, naturalness, an authenticity.
[104] I always moved towards being just really honest.
[105] So I didn't put on any performance.
[106] I was just finding the parts in myself that were true to the material.
[107] And I didn't overdo it.
[108] So it felt like under -played and real.
[109] And what kind of experience did you have acting before you did your auditions?
[110] After -school programs.
[111] Did like musical theater and, yeah, like we would put on a show.
[112] It was more of an after -school program, not professionally.
[113] Although you know producers and agents started to sniff around they started to notice me and i just always rejected because i didn't want to be an actor that's the truth i didn't want to do it as a profession um i still resist it to what did you want to do i was more into music i think and directing filmmaking i i loved to so my friends and i in high school we would make movies high eight cameras.
[114] You know, you get a camera and you just start filming and you'd cut it.
[115] You would do all the editing within the camera.
[116] Yeah.
[117] You wouldn't download it to a machine or like edit it.
[118] You would just, okay, ready, action.
[119] And then you do one take and then you change the angle and you shoot it in sequence and you edit as you shot.
[120] And this was at LaGuardia when you were doing this?
[121] Yeah.
[122] My friends and I, that's what we'd do in the weekends.
[123] We would make movies.
[124] And it didn't matter if you were holding the camera, if you were in front of the camera, if you were holding the boom, or if you were climbing up the side of the building to get the cool shot, you really were able to move throughout all the different roles.
[125] And I just loved the process.
[126] So I was always okay being in front of camera out of necessity because we're telling a story, but I really had stories that I wanted to tell.
[127] So whatever it took to get the job done, I was happy to do it.
[128] But being an actor, you know, the ego of, like, wanting to be seen was never really my motivation.
[129] It was more just to tell stories.
[130] How is it then that you became an actor?
[131] What happened?
[132] And was that part and parcel of what you learned at LaGuardia?
[133] Well, yeah, I had the skills, the baseline skill, you know, Stanislavski method and all that stuff.
[134] Tell me about the Stanislovsky method.
[135] Oh, man, if I can remember.
[136] I mean, Stanislavski method was really just about naturalness and being authentic to the circumstances of the material.
[137] Right.
[138] So you're trying to make the part your own?
[139] Yeah.
[140] Finding that the parts in you that you come alive when you're, because there is all of every character within us.
[141] Was that explicitly taught at LaGuardia?
[142] Like, how do you, I don't know how you learn to act.
[143] How did you learn to act?
[144] Yeah, we learn techniques.
[145] um certainly and then you know there we put on scenes we put on plays um at the end of the like the third and fourth year there you'd do plays whole plays yeah but by then i was really moving towards the music scene what did you play so i self -taught so i was playing guitar bass and you know eventually started playing drums because i was autodidactic because i had no formal training, I had no rules.
[146] So it was just whatever.
[147] And it's rock and roll.
[148] So, you know, you learn three chords and you're off to the races.
[149] I was in a band.
[150] Our band in high school was called the UFOs, the unidentified funky organisms.
[151] And it was a lot of fun and really loved the camaraderie and the immediacy of music.
[152] Whereas acting, you know, you go and you rehearse and you practice and then eventually maybe you get on stage and there's an immediacy when you're on stage.
[153] Filmmaking is a lot longer, you know, lead time for your gratification.
[154] Music is like, boom, you hit the drum and people feel it and it's like really present and I really enjoyed that.
[155] So why did things expand out for you on the acting side rather than, say, on the music side?
[156] I mean, I know both of those are unlikely careers.
[157] So I went to college briefly and I was taking film and they handed me a bunch of books to read on film and they gave me a camera and they go go make a film come back and then we'll critique it and I was like I'm paying you to do that like my friends and I do that like why would I pay all this money go into debt for you to tell me what I can do on my own.
[158] I was pretty self -motivated so I just dropped out of school and just started doing it myself this was after LaGuardia after LaGuardia where did you go to college and you were there for how long A year.
[159] Oh, yeah.
[160] So you were there for a whole year.
[161] But you felt that you could do this essentially on your owner with your friends.
[162] Yes, exactly, without having to pay for it, right?
[163] And it was a lot of money, right?
[164] So, but, you know, that wasn't the main, that was one of the reasons I dropped out.
[165] The other reason was love.
[166] I fell in love with a girl who happened to be living in New York and would have just rather hang out with her and spend time with her.
[167] And she influenced me to just stay.
[168] It was like one night I was supposed to go back to school.
[169] I was in the city, and she goes, just stay.
[170] And I just never went back to school.
[171] Where was the school?
[172] It was just two hours upstate New York.
[173] Okay, okay, I see.
[174] But so I ended up staying with her, and that's a whole other story.
[175] I mean, lost kid with a girl.
[176] It was just pretty destructive relationship.
[177] How old were you then?
[178] 18.
[179] Oh, yeah, 18.
[180] Yeah.
[181] But once I got out of that, you know, I got my first job.
[182] It was funny.
[183] I was living with her, I didn't expect to tell this story.
[184] I was living with her at her parents' house who had this huge apartment on the east side.
[185] It was like Sutton Place.
[186] It was like the nicest place in New York.
[187] And it was such a big apartment that they didn't even know I was there.
[188] Yeah.
[189] How long were you there?
[190] Six months, eight months, a long time.
[191] long time, but it was the housekeeper that kicked me into gear.
[192] She was like, what's wrong with you, boy?
[193] You're a strong young boy.
[194] Go out yourself and get yourself a job.
[195] You need to get yourself.
[196] I'm not doing your laundry anymore.
[197] So she basically kicked some sense into me and made me get a job, which was my first job.
[198] Where was your mother in the picture at this point?
[199] I'm sure she was pulling her hair out and not knowing what to do.
[200] I feel so bad at that time in her life.
[201] I mean, in retrospect, must have been distraught by my behavior I dropped out of school didn't have a job I was with this girl who is a little bit why did the girl put up with you she was troubled she was more troubled than me how about that okay and I you know I thought you know I thought I could barely save myself in the whole situation yeah all right so this housekeeper gave you a kick she did why did why was she why did you listen to her because she was doing my laundry and I was like I you know it's like I need to do something.
[202] I think, I don't know, I just, I knew that it was time.
[203] There's always this voice deep down inside.
[204] It's like, hey, you know, you've got to get yourself together.
[205] But I started waiting tables, typical, you know, starving actor, although I wasn't trying to act.
[206] But as I was waiting tables, I was very rebellious.
[207] I wouldn't shave.
[208] And this is back in the 90s, and they didn't tolerate that at restaurants.
[209] It's like you had to be clean -shaven.
[210] Now it's hip, like hipsters wear be beards as waiters.
[211] Then you had to be clean -shaven.
[212] I wouldn't do it.
[213] So the only jobs I ever got were these shitty restaurants that were going out of business or struggling, so I wouldn't make very much money.
[214] So I had a lot of time on my hands to think about my life.
[215] And it was in that moment.
[216] I was like, I have to make a change.
[217] I don't want to do this for the rest of my life.
[218] And that's when I found some motivation to try this acting thing.
[219] and so that's when you started attending auditions formal additions I called I don't know if I had an agent at the time maybe I did but I wasn't I was blowing off auditions I was just not motivated but in this case I was like okay I'm getting the next job that I go on the next audition I'm in a book and I did and I was the first film that I So how are you spending your forget about the restaurant jobs how are you spending your days during that period What were you actually doing?
[220] Oh, that's a dark view.
[221] You want to go there?
[222] Well, I'm curious because, you know, part of what I like to understand about people is how they find their pathway forward, how they find their motivation.
[223] And you stopped going to school.
[224] You were with this girl.
[225] You were in love with her.
[226] You were hoping that something would come out of that, although that seems not to have made itself manifest.
[227] so and you were living in her apartment you ended up with low paying jobs beginner jobs what was going through your mind at the time were you were you angry like no i was just romantic you know i thought like we were going to be in love and you know and there's this i guess this starving narrative starving artist idea you know we have to be you know living low to ground just like finding our foods sleeping in the streets you know there's like sort of a romance yeah yeah it was this like new york thing i'm a street you know i'm living in the streets and we would like we would hang out in the streets and you know find places to sleep and it was cool and i felt cool um do you ever see that movie kids no i don't believe so harmony corin is it um maybe he wrote it it's it's it's a movie that whenever i watch it it's like pure nostalgia it's Like, oh my God, that's exactly how it was.
[228] You can just watch the preview.
[229] It's gnarly.
[230] And was it filmed in New York as well?
[231] It filmed in New York.
[232] And a lot of the kids in the movie, I knew, because they were basically taking real kids from the streets and then making a little story around these hood rats, you know?
[233] And these were all the kids that I knew and hung out with.
[234] Some of them were a little bit too scary for my crew, but we knew who they were.
[235] And it was just romantic.
[236] And the kids just running, shit.
[237] shit on the streets.
[238] Like, no fathers, you know, single mothers and all these kids just finding a place to drink a beer, really.
[239] And in New York City, there are no parks.
[240] I mean, there's Central Park, but it's stoops and abandoned buildings, you know, that we'd break into.
[241] At this time, it was still the 90s, so that it hadn't been completely gentrified yet.
[242] So, yeah, there's a cool factor to it, like rock and roll and punk and, and, um, and, you know, You know, I met the girl that I'm talking about.
[243] I met her in a mosh pit at CBGB's when she was like 13.
[244] I was like 14, you know, and so that was just the milieu, the vibe.
[245] It was cool.
[246] So it felt like it at least.
[247] Yeah, well, maybe it was.
[248] I mean, it's not obvious what you have to go through when you're young to get your head screwed on straight.
[249] So it took me 20 more years before I finally did.
[250] Yeah, yeah.
[251] Yeah, well, congratulations on managing it at all.
[252] Yeah, thank you.
[253] All right.
[254] All right, so you took these restaurant jobs.
[255] Were they good for anything?
[256] No, no, no. I had to get out of that.
[257] And when I booked my first film, that was it.
[258] I just started acting.
[259] And I was still keeping it pretty humble.
[260] I would do a job a year.
[261] I'd make more money than I'd ever seen 50 grand to do a movie.
[262] and then I just make it last for the year.
[263] And I still play with the movie.
[264] So what was your first movie?
[265] It was called The Adventures of Sebastian Cole.
[266] How old were you when you did that?
[267] 20, 21.
[268] Yeah.
[269] And did you have, it sounds like you had more offers than you took up.
[270] Oh yeah, I screwed up a lot of offers.
[271] I could be a lot more famous than I am today.
[272] But I just, I always reject, Like, there's something that just didn't trust Hollywood.
[273] I was always like, yeah, that seems shady.
[274] It seems shady.
[275] And so I resisted, I resisted, I resisted.
[276] It wasn't until, and I had opportunities I did, but I was bike messaging for a while.
[277] Like, I would rather do anything than have to act if I didn't have to.
[278] Well, that's, it's strange.
[279] Well, it's strange in some ways because you obviously have a knack for it.
[280] you were rewarded for it when you went into the selective high school.
[281] You got parts when you auditioned, so you obviously knew what you were doing.
[282] And even you said that you weren't necessarily reliable in consequence of the additions, but the offers kept coming.
[283] So it matched your ability.
[284] So what was it about the...
[285] Well, and even you would think to some degree it would match the romance too, you know, because you were, in principle, you had made films, you were sort of artist on the street.
[286] And so, like, what the hell was wrong with some success?
[287] What was it that stopped you from that, do you think?
[288] Nothing stopped me. I mean, it happened anyway, despite myself.
[289] But I was resistant to it.
[290] I guess I did not want to be someone else's pawn.
[291] You know, I didn't want to be someone, just like a sort of a vapid shell for someone else to use for their stories.
[292] I had things that I wanted to say.
[293] In fact, to just underscore the whole thing, entourage, which is what I'm most known for, kept coming at me to come audition, and I kept ignoring it.
[294] And it wasn't until I was in Mexico on my way to Cuba.
[295] I was going to sneak into Cuba to make a documentary about Cuban hip -hop, which I found super interesting.
[296] at the time.
[297] And I had about $1 ,000 left from the last movie I did six months ago.
[298] And I was like, I could probably make this $1 ,000 stretch to make this film, come home, get a job, and then make the movie on the side.
[299] Or, you know, work on the side.
[300] The documentary.
[301] The documentary.
[302] Yeah.
[303] And when I was there, I would visit the internet cafe.
[304] This is back when, you know, they didn't have, we didn't have cell phones and all that jazz.
[305] So I go to the internet cafe to check my email every couple of days.
[306] and my manager he said you have to read this and if you don't come back to L .A. to audition you can find a new manager so essentially he laid down the law and I knew on some level that if I kept turning my back on Hollywood it would find another when did you go from New York to L .A.?
[307] Well I never technically lived in L .A. I always stayed in New York but I did spend a lot of time there shooting the film but I kept my residence in New York all right so you were doing you were doing sporadically movies.
[308] You were obviously successful in that so that people were aware of you.
[309] Your name got around.
[310] How did you come up on the entourage hit list?
[311] Yeah, it was indie films, a lot of indie films like Sundance, Starling, that kind of thing.
[312] I did a couple of teeny bopper movies, so I had a little bit of clout in Hollywood.
[313] But here's this unique role where someone has to play a celebrity.
[314] And all celebrities who would be celebrities would be good for the role.
[315] are already celebrities and would never do this pilot, which it was at the time, or they'd want more money than the budget would account for.
[316] So you have to find someone who embodied, like, who had that celebrity...
[317] Charisma.
[318] There you go.
[319] And I guess part of my nonchalance and me ignoring them made them think, what is this guy?
[320] Like, he's, you know, he must be something, right?
[321] and when my manager sort of put the, you know, the law down, and I said, okay, I'll come, but can you send me a plane ticket?
[322] It flew me out.
[323] And this was, this was what year?
[324] How old were you then?
[325] I'm about 28.
[326] Okay.
[327] And so you spent nine years before you had, what would you say, solid, reliable, continual wealth.
[328] Yes, wealth.
[329] Yes.
[330] And work, you were working sporadically.
[331] a project a year, something like that.
[332] But, you know, I lived in an apartment with a bunch of other, you know, roommates.
[333] And so I was just living really, you know, meek.
[334] Right, right, right.
[335] And you weren't interested in money.
[336] No. I mean, I have much more respect to money now.
[337] You are definitely a strange actor.
[338] You don't want the spotlight and you're not interested in money.
[339] So that's a whole.
[340] hard thing to square with a career in acting.
[341] God bless actors, I, I don't always get along with them.
[342] I think for the reason, for those reasons, you know, when I, you know, it feels like it's about them and what they want.
[343] Yeah.
[344] They're the instrument.
[345] Well, they're the stars.
[346] You know, well, you know, what kind of goes along with the territory?
[347] I mean, people in media, people in politics, people in entertainment, they tilt towards narcissism.
[348] And I'm not saying that in an insulting way.
[349] I mean, every personality constellation has its associated vices, knowing if you're going to want to be on camera, if you're going to be want to be around people, that's one of the things that tilts you in the direction of it's sort of being about you.
[350] And if you're a charismatic personality and you're an actor, you're going to attract people around you who facilitate that development, let's say.
[351] And so it's part and parcel of the territory.
[352] But you're not really temperamentally like that.
[353] Oh, I cultivated my narcissism, okay.
[354] No, I definitely found that part within me that was the character of Vince, and I, you know, they say actors get lost in their characters, right?
[355] Yeah.
[356] And I did.
[357] How long did Entourage run?
[358] Ten years.
[359] Right, right.
[360] So that's a very major chunk of time.
[361] Oh, yeah.
[362] Yeah, well, so walk me through that.
[363] So you got your plane ticket, you went out to L .A. What happened then?
[364] Got the part.
[365] When my manager found out that I got the part, he walked in the room and I had no place to stay.
[366] I had no car.
[367] So I'm in his office, checking my email again.
[368] And he walks in, and he was the first person to call me Vince.
[369] He's like, Vince!
[370] And I knew I got the part and I hung my head because I knew that it was going to totally change my life in ways that I didn't know if I really wanted.
[371] And I knew that I was going to have to commit to this.
[372] Because he used to tell me, like you don't even know what you don't know.
[373] Like you're going to have access and women and money and all these things.
[374] Yeah, yeah.
[375] Because he was, you know, managing other famous people.
[376] So he understood and he's like, you don't even know you want it, but when you get it, you'll know you want it.
[377] You know, you'll know it's great.
[378] And it was going to change my life.
[379] And because it's a commitment.
[380] When you audition for something like that, you have to sign a six -year contract.
[381] Right.
[382] Right.
[383] So you're already committed before they even give you the role.
[384] And it did.
[385] It changed.
[386] my life entirely and I had to learn to be that celebrity or my own version, my own expression of that celebrity.
[387] And then with the success of the show and the popularity of the characters and people would come up to me and, you know, instant approval, instant, you walk into a room and, you know, yeah.
[388] You know, you get that attention, that just acceptance.
[389] Had that happened to you at before?
[390] I mean, you'd had some success as a, as an actor before that, but not like that.
[391] Not like that.
[392] Oh, totally different.
[393] Yeah.
[394] I mean.
[395] And you were, so you were about 28, you said, when this.
[396] 28, 27, 28.
[397] Okay, so you're not a kid when this happened.
[398] So that's something.
[399] So, all right.
[400] So now you have what, you said instant accessibility, instant approval.
[401] Right.
[402] Tell me about the character that you played and how that tangled up into that.
[403] Yeah.
[404] So Vince is a celebrity who's you know, very nonchalant, and, you know, the whole theme is if this doesn't work out, if all the fame and fortune doesn't work out, I can always move back to Queens.
[405] So it was like a perfect, talk about typecast, right?
[406] Yeah, all the characters have.
[407] That's very strange.
[408] We're all New York kids and, you know, and we were all very well cast, you know.
[409] but I think that's partly they were writing the character to reflect me oh yeah okay and partly that was the character that was because right so that's fun trying to distinguish your actual life from your role it was more fun to blur the lines um because you start to acquiesce to people's wanting you to be the character oh do shots with us right like yeah okay oh you know do some shots with these guys and I'm I like people's So, and then, you know, then there's the the pitfalls in the women and the, you know, and I started to believe that that was the way it's supposed to be, right?
[410] You mean supposed to be, meaning that characteristic of success?
[411] Vince gets all the girls and the money and the power and the fame.
[412] And that was appropriate and good.
[413] And as his star rose, my star rose, and it just became easier and easier to say yes to the indulgences.
[414] And I got really good at it.
[415] Whereas before I was leery of it, you get, you know, you allow yourself to enjoy it, you know, very easily.
[416] It becomes easy to say yes.
[417] Especially when it's justified.
[418] Well, you're the celebrity, of course.
[419] You get the accolades.
[420] You must know a little bit about that yourself.
[421] I mean, your life has changed.
[422] Well, this all happened to me when I was pretty old.

[424] So, I mean, I was laboring under some degree of obscurity till I was about 50, you know, 53, 54.
[425] So, you know, I was already fairly cemented into place by the time I...
[426] That's right.
[427] Yeah.
[428] Right, right.
[429] And, you know, I have a very tight family and a very tight network of friends.
[430] And so that's also made a substantial difference to me. I don't know what it would have been like to, have encountered that sort of thing when I was much younger.
[431] I mean, I probably would have been wild, especially if I would have done it before I quit drinking.
[432] So I quit drinking when I was about 25, 26, something like that.
[433] And that straightens out your life pretty radically, but I was pretty wild, you know, when I was drinking, so.
[434] Right.
[435] So, you know, growing up in New York, there's a little bit of nihilism, godless, you know, and this was now the overlay of my my ego which was see you know i am the man i you know i got the part yeah and people are you know approval the proving of me yeah so it just yeah well it's a very difficult thing i mean i don't know exactly how it is that you can resist part of being socialized is to pay attention to what others think of you right i mean that's part of being in the loop for accepting social feedback.
[436] And normally, you know, you're not carried around on the shoulders of others constantly, but you found yourself in that situation, essentially.
[437] It's like, it isn't obvious to me how people can withstand that.
[438] I've talked to Russell Brand a little bit about that because he was spectacularly successful.
[439] And also, you know, what would you say, in the market for whatever appetitive urges might make themselves manifest.
[440] And so, you know, He's talked to me a little bit about that, and he paid, I would say, a relatively heavy price for that.
[441] He and I might have been friends if we weren't competing for the same chicks.
[442] Aha.
[443] Did you know him?
[444] Did you know him in L .A.?
[445] We crossed paths a few times.
[446] Uh -huh.
[447] Uh -huh.
[448] All right.
[449] So now you're in now, so this is very interesting.
[450] You resisted this.
[451] And now you're, now you were spending your primary amount of time in L .A. when, when entourage was six, eight months a year.
[452] Yeah, okay.
[453] in New York.
[454] And by the way, I didn't have a house in L .A. I had a house that I stayed when I was there.
[455] Yeah, okay, okay.
[456] I kept my New York address, and I got mail there, and my bills there.
[457] So, pay taxes there.
[458] So funny enough, like I, you should check out.
[459] I actually made a documentary.
[460] So simultaneously while I'm on this ride, and I'm finding more and more excuses to indulge and enjoy the lifestyle, I was maintaining a sense of my goodness by doing environmental work and starting charities and making documentaries.
[461] And I still had a band the whole time.
[462] In fact, the band really got popular after that, even though we might not have deserved it otherwise.
[463] So I still had my other life, which kept me feeling like I was not swept up in that right thing.
[464] Right, right.
[465] But not really recognizing how much I really was, you know, captured.
[466] Okay, so then, so why not be captured?
[467] Like, I mean, you were successful.
[468] You got the part.
[469] The part was successful.
[470] The series was successful.
[471] And you have these things that are laid at your feet.
[472] So what's the problem with indulging?
[473] You know, I thought I was going to live my whole life in that lifestyle.
[474] Yeah.
[475] And I couldn't figure out a way.
[476] Like, my logic, mind could not understand why I would do it any other way.
[477] Yeah.
[478] I didn't believe in God.
[479] I didn't, you know, I was open and poly and, you know, liberal.
[480] And I thought I was a good person.
[481] I really did.
[482] It wasn't until I was in my 40s, and the love of my life was dating at the time, she dumped me. And she, in no uncertain terms, said, you are the worst.
[483] You need to look at, and she gave me a list.
[484] She even did.
[485] She was a, you know.
[486] She was thorough.
[487] She was nice and nice.
[488] enough to give me a list.
[489] Take a look at how you're drinking, take about how you're using sex, take a look at all these things.
[490] See, I'd lose my number.
[491] And it was almost like a glitch in the matrix.
[492] I was like, you know, for a second, I was like, what?
[493] There was something off.
[494] Like, how is it?
[495] This girl, she was young, you know, and she didn't, like, here I am, the powerful, rich, famous person who is justified in everything I'm doing, because I also do charity, and she's leaving me. I could give her everything, access, we could fly, like we do everything, go around the world, anything, and she's leaving me. So that was like weird, but I was like, all right, I'll find another girl, not a problem.
[496] But it stayed with me, and because I loved her and respected her so much.
[497] Why did you respect her?
[498] Because I knew, I knew that she was honest, and I knew that she was.
[499] because she wanted what's best for me. I see.
[500] So she actually loved you.
[501] Yeah.
[502] Oh, well, that's annoying.
[503] Yeah.
[504] And it stayed with me. And you said that the charity work you did and so forth.
[505] You're implying that, at least in part, that that was in, what would you say?
[506] a moral flag to fly while you're living in a moral life?
[507] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[508] Did you know that at the time?
[509] No, I literally, I legitimately believed that I'm glad that I'm the famous person with the access and the money because I can actually make the world a better place.
[510] Because I have a good heart.
[511] Yeah.
[512] And I think this is like my mother telling me, oh, you're a good, you know, and that's a whole other side track, but you know moms that love their kids they tell them they're good yeah and no one ever told me that i was bad or that i could be so i never really got to connect into the part of me that was treacherous and destructive and selfish because i was just imagine and this girl she alerted you to that oh yeah yeah and did that happen like were there hints of that before the breakup there was a looming dread in my life life is perfect?
[513] Wait a minute.
[514] Why is my life perfect?
[515] There's nothing wrong with my life.
[516] I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
[517] I'm like, well, is it death?
[518] Is that what I'm just afraid of?
[519] Or is there, what is it?
[520] There's something that I'm not connecting into.
[521] And quite frankly, I was all head.
[522] I was all intellect and groin.
[523] I was all head and cock.
[524] Like I didn't have any feeling in here.
[525] I didn't have any intuition.
[526] I was totally disconnected from...
[527] Now, you tied that at least provisionally to your mother's insistence that you were essentially good, right?
[528] So you hadn't been called on your misbehavior.
[529] Well, I think that when I was younger, there was some traumatic things that happened to me that were so painful that I sort of dissociated and decided I didn't want to feel anymore.
[530] This is what I've come to realize.
[531] When I've now later in life, after taking my ex -girlfriend's list and then starting to investigate.
[532] And so what I did was a hard thing, and I cut up all of the distractions, all of the addictions, all of the addictions and consumptions and, you know, no alcohol.
[533] alcohol, no sex, you know, a celibate for a long time and basically removing everything that was keeping me, you know, my dopamine hits high.
[534] Yeah.
[535] Yeah.
[536] Were you still working on entourage during this time?
[537] No. No. So this was, this is after this, that came to an end.
[538] Yes.
[539] Were you involved in any other acting endeavor?
[540] Oh, in fact, I quit acting during this period.
[541] Uh -huh.
[542] I called my agent and I said, I need some time to figure some stuff out.
[543] So I don't want you to waste your time putting me up for things because I'm, I'm just not going to work for a while.
[544] Burst in the tears, because it was like, who am I now?
[545] Right.
[546] What am I?
[547] Right.
[548] And that began a multi -year process of me, well, first of all, cutting out all the distractions enough for me to see what was going on inside and ground in and come down to earth and start to realize that I had a lot of pain.
[549] I had a lot of childhood trauma that I was not, you know, that was metastasized inside of me. And so that really began my steps towards, I think, growing up.
[550] And so what did that look like growing up as far as you're concerned?
[551] What changed?
[552] I mean, you said you started to cut out the distractions, the addictions, the immediate pleasures.
[553] Yes.
[554] And you did that at least in part because of the list this girl left you.
[555] Yeah, she was very explicit.
[556] She's a smart, intuitive woman, so she knew exactly where I should look.
[557] So she gave me a map, and I started to look, and she was right, you know.
[558] And it was just opening up the door, though, and then, you know, the path was long, deep and dark.
[559] I mean, I went through, you know, multi -year dark night of the soul and, you know, had to come out the other end, awkward and finding, you know, a new way of being in the world without all of the support of the...
[560] Yeah, so what did that new way involve?
[561] What changed?
[562] I mean, I know you stop.
[563] Like, there's the things you stop doing, but that just leaves, well, that leaves an emptiness in your life.
[564] I mean, that's the problem with cutting out anything that's, let's say.
[565] that call it addictive.
[566] It's like, well, that's how you spend your time.
[567] So now you stop doing that.
[568] You don't even have the same friends anymore.
[569] So what I realize is I didn't want to die alone.
[570] I wanted a family.
[571] I wanted partnership.
[572] I wanted to have children.
[573] How come you hadn't known that before?
[574] My dad left.
[575] Yeah.
[576] I didn't, you know, life is scary, life is upsetting.
[577] I didn't that that was an honorable pursuit.
[578] I thought it was a tragic pursuit.
[579] I didn't think I could be a good father.
[580] Oh, I see.
[581] I didn't know if I was going to be able to be there for my kid.
[582] Right.
[583] Yeah, well, you wouldn't have that doubt if your father left, because how the hell would you know?
[584] You didn't have the model.
[585] In fact, you have the reverse model.
[586] Well, and I was selfish, too.
[587] Like, I really just wanted pleasure.
[588] I was hedonistic.
[589] I was seeking, you know, the next hit.
[590] you know, and not, you know, I'm still an adolescent punk.
[591] Yeah.
[592] I was still that punk in the streets.
[593] Yeah, yeah.
[594] Just with more stuff and more opportunity.
[595] Right, right, right.
[596] Right, yeah, which isn't necessarily an advantage if, if the path you're on is like scattering you everywhere.
[597] Yeah.
[598] All right.
[599] So how long did you spend sorting yourself out?
[600] Two, two and a half years.
[601] You know, I confront it a lot.
[602] And I realized that I, so I was given a little tip from a healer, from a mentor, who said, you have to get in the earth.
[603] You have to ground yourself.
[604] Like, be in the soil.
[605] And she, I was like, all right.
[606] So what I did, I actually had a place here in Austin on the east side.
[607] I had a little bungalow with a little camper.
[608] So I quit everything.
[609] I stopped all the distractions and all the indulgences and the escape.
[610] And I just started meditating and started listening to wiser people than me. I started listening to you and other...
[611] That's never a good thing.
[612] It worked.
[613] It worked to some degree.
[614] But you know, you realize there's so many...
[615] There's so much information that you can...
[616] So much wisdom and education that I hadn't...
[617] tapped into because I was distracted.
[618] And so I was seeking advice from elders and counsel from friends and starting to orient myself with people who I saw as having living a life that I think that I might want.
[619] So I changed my friend group and just started DMing them.
[620] And luckily for me, because I'm somewhat famous people would respond.
[621] And anyway, this one woman, she's like, you need to ground yourself and get in the earth.
[622] So what I did is I moved into my camper and I lived there for a year, small little 50 square foot camper, whatever it was.
[623] And I started building a community garden.
[624] And I was just digging in the soil and planting and digging and working, meditating and cooking in an open fire.
[625] And people grew a beard and then the pandemic hit.
[626] And I was like, perfect.
[627] Like, I'm already, you know, solo in isolation.
[628] I don't, it didn't affect me at all.
[629] It didn't change anything.
[630] I just kept doing the work, kept doing the work.
[631] Got really healthy, worked out.
[632] And it worked.
[633] I mean, the grounding was profound, and that's when I realized that I wanted to change my whole life to be closer to nature.
[634] All this environmental activism that I was doing, this legislation and hearts and minds.
[635] and, you know, consumer behavior, all that stuff that I was doing, UN Environment Ambassador, all that stuff was just so out there.
[636] It was like outside of myself.
[637] What I wanted to do is just do the work, like be, learn the skills to actually support the earth, like right here, right now.
[638] You know, and I realized how much I didn't respect and appreciate what farmers do.
[639] And I was like, I want them to make all these changes.
[640] for the environment, but I don't even understand why they do what they do and why they would choose one thing over another.
[641] So I say, this is what I'm doing.
[642] I'm going to be the one that knows about farming.
[643] I'm going to be the one that knows how to grow food and build a skill so that I can feed myself, I can feed my family, take care of myself and my family.
[644] And what was happening on the romantic side during this period?
[645] Utterly alone, sad.
[646] lonely.
[647] And by the way, like I, you know, cut out porn and, you know, no masturbation, so I didn't even have that, you know, I'm, you know, sitting there just with myself.
[648] And, you know, and I know that I knew that was a big distraction as well.
[649] Why did you stick with it?
[650] Well, so there's one time I was, I think I was going to Cannes or something, the Can Film Festival.
[651] And I hitched a ride on this billionaire's private plane.
[652] And he was 80 years old and gray hair.
[653] And he gets on the plane and he has like six hot young models with him.
[654] And my mentality at the time, I was like, damn, this guy's the man. Like, look at him.
[655] He's 80 and he's still got it.
[656] And there was just a little voice in my head is like, I hope I can still do that when I'm his age, a little voice.
[657] And then I realized, Adrian, you do whatever you want.
[658] Whatever you say happens, you can manifest shit, you know, you know that you will have that.
[659] And it just, it like really shuddered me. I was like, holy shit, wait a minute.
[660] I don't want that.
[661] I realized in that moment, I was like, that's exactly what I don't want.
[662] and so I started to rewrite what I actually...
[663] Why did you figure that out?
[664] I mean, you said, you know, your first impression was it's like Hugh Hefner and his blonde chicks going around Europe.
[665] I mean, what fun for everyone.
[666] I watched that show a couple of times, and I thought...
[667] It might have been on that episode.
[668] Yeah, well, it seemed like a pretty dismal form of hell to me. So...
[669] Yeah.
[670] And, well, why?
[671] none of it's real.
[672] I guess that's the fundamental issue.
[673] None of it's real.
[674] And maybe that's part of that longing that you described for a long -term relationship and for kids.
[675] Yeah, I wrestled with these questions.
[676] I was like, what do I really want?
[677] Why do I want it?
[678] And, you know, pushing up against my impulses, my instincts, the carnal part of me, that wanted me to keep doing the same things.
[679] But as I started to, you know what it was also?
[680] I wanted to, I wanted to, I wanted.
[681] to protect and take care of, I wanted to be a protector.
[682] Hmm.
[683] I didn't want to be the one.
[684] Right, that's a really different role than user.
[685] Yeah.
[686] Yeah.
[687] And because this is coming off of the inspiration that my ex -girlfriend gave me, which was, take a look at yourself, you've hurt me, and I saw her tears.
[688] I saw the pain that I caused her.
[689] And when I got over the fact, I was like, you know, you made your choice.
[690] Yeah.
[691] You, you chose to be with me. I told you who I was.
[692] Right.
[693] When I started to realize that I was not taking care of her and that I was actively hurting her, I didn't want to be that person.
[694] Mm -hmm.
[695] And then when I finally had an awakening, like, I mean...
[696] Does she know that all of this happened to you in the aftermath of her note?
[697] She does.
[698] Are you still in touch?
[699] We are.
[700] Yeah.
[701] Is she married?
[702] She is.
[703] Does she have kids?
[704] She does.
[705] We both happen to have a kid with the same name.
[706] Oh.
[707] Hmm.
[708] So, okay, so run me up into that.
[709] You obviously met someone.
[710] Well, her son is my son.
[711] So we ended up getting back together.
[712] Oh, you did.
[713] Yeah.
[714] Oh.
[715] Hmm.
[716] How long did that take?
[717] It took a long time.
[718] it took a long time so i had to you know i had to become a new thing a new person and totally change everything um and then i had to convince her that i had changed how much age difference is there between you 18 17 years i see okay yeah and she wasn't having i mean she she was like yeah right yeah right yeah well that sort of changed that's a lot of change yeah yeah yeah and this was during the pandemic and she was in Europe and I had to pull a lot of strings to get to see her and she was at arm's length for a long time and I had to consistently show up as the new me while she's poking and prodding me making sure that...
[719] How long did you have to do that?
[720] It was a year and a half.
[721] Yeah, you know, and...
[722] So she put you through your paces.
[723] Well, and also I'm like, I'm not...
[724] I'm not...
[725] I'm not...
[726] I'm not dating, anyone, I'm not distracted, I will spare no expense, and I will take as long as it takes for us to heal without any expectation that we're going to, you know, be together.
[727] And keep in mind, like, I've been celibate for, you know, almost a year, eight months.
[728] And then when we're with her, she's like, okay, well, you know, if you're going to be dating anyone, I don't want to even talk to you.
[729] I was like, all right.
[730] So I basically had to double down until we, um, you know, many years, many months later, finally had some breakthroughs.
[731] And I wasn't expecting to be back with her, but we fell in love again.
[732] A new.
[733] We fell in love.
[734] Where were you?
[735] When we fell in love.
[736] Yeah, yeah.
[737] So this was in Portugal.
[738] Yeah, and that was just the beginning of a new romance.
[739] And she tested me, and I was struggling still.
[740] Because it hadn't really, it was new.
[741] I was like a toddler trying to walk for the first time, you know.
[742] And then eventually she moved to Austin, and then we, I told her I wanted to buy some land.
[743] I wanted to do this life.
[744] And I'd been holding off.
[745] I'd been waiting to move into land until my partner showed up in my life so that we could make that choice together so that it would be ours.
[746] As opposed to the old dynamic was, look, this is my life and you can enter it.
[747] But like I hold all the cards and it's all my stuff.
[748] And you're just, you know, lucky to be here.
[749] Right, right.
[750] This is now ours.
[751] And when she came to Austin and things just clicked, they started clicking.
[752] I was definitely on the right path because everything was just unfolding in such serendipity.
[753] we went and found a piece of land it was beautiful she fell in love with it i fell in love with it and then you know now we've been i've been back together for three and a half years got married we have a kid and how old is your child almost one 11 months what's that being like you're happy about that how are you as a father how are you as a father i'm a great father how come because I'm in service.
[754] Yeah.
[755] That's a good deal.
[756] I'm fucking here.
[757] I've designed my life so that I could be there with him and with her.
[758] And so reimagined what my life could be.
[759] And it's on land.
[760] We have 46 acres.
[761] We're building a little nature community.
[762] We have a number of homes.
[763] We're inviting people to live there.
[764] We have agriculture projects that are all supporting, you know, the whole project.
[765] And I get to do that work every day.
[766] So it keeps me grounded.
[767] What kind of work do you do?
[768] So learning all the skills are trying to learn.
[769] I'm certainly definitely still an apprentice of the land.
[770] Yeah.
[771] You know, I spent 40 -something years in New York, and now I'm just trying to keep things alive and learning, you know, about.
[772] you know the snakes and how to wrangle them and not try and kill everything that scares me but try and move against it and um be brave in those moments and and fail and still keep at it and all my mentors and farmers mentors and friends are farmers and i just you know sent a bunch of texas more like yeah there's a storm coming you know should we prepare like what what should we do and just getting a lot of advice and by the way these farmers are dying they're death for young people to care about what they're doing.
[773] They're looking for someone to pass down their knowledge and their wisdom.
[774] There's just not a lot of people who are wanting to do that.
[775] Everyone wants to move to the cities and be fancy or something.
[776] So it just feels good.
[777] The father I never had are in all the older men that are now my mentors, the homesteaders and farmers.
[778] So what do I do now?
[779] I work the land and build this community.
[780] And so what does a typical day look like?
[781] Well, you wake up.
[782] I usually take Saco in the morning, my son, and we go out on the land, he and I, let out the ducks, take the dogs and make, you know, take them for a walk.
[783] And he and I spend some time together until my wife wakes up and then she takes over.
[784] And then I work with Ben who works on the land and we have our little laboratory, what I call it.
[785] It's sort of our place to experiment.
[786] We have a food forest and grapes.
[787] We're making some wine and annual garden food, some animals, feed the animals.
[788] And then also, I get to still be creative because I get to tell the story.
[789] So I have a channel called EarthSpeed, and so we're telling stories from the land.
[790] Is that a YouTube channel?
[791] How does that work?
[792] YouTube, Instagram, yeah.
[793] Yeah, okay, okay.
[794] But continuing to tell stories as a filmmaker, I'm making a documentary right now.
[795] So I get to both be present, be with my family.
[796] I get to continue my work grounding myself into hard skills, primitive skills of survival and protection.
[797] And forget the philosophy where I think that we should all be a little bit closer to nature and closer to each other in community.
[798] It's just, I get to build that and build that model that maybe will serve my local community and might be a model for others to replicate Sunday.
[799] So where is your land?
[800] Just outside of Austin.
[801] How far?
[802] 30 minutes.
[803] And is it near a town?
[804] Is it truly rural?
[805] I don't tell people where it is.
[806] Oh, yeah.
[807] Okay.
[808] We have had, I'm still famous, we still, we have had some sockers.
[809] Yeah.
[810] But it's cute little, there's a lot of really cute historic towns in Texas.
[811] So we have a historic town, which is a 30 -minute float down the Colorado River.
[812] And we have springs, and we get to sewer it because there's a lot of development out there.
[813] So there's a lot of tracked homes, HOA's coming in and just clear -cutting everything, and then putting all these generic houses.
[814] So we get to actually preserve and steward that land as it's meant to be, you know, as natural.
[815] And so how long have you had this piece of land?
[816] Three years.
[817] Uh -huh.
[818] So that's starting to be a reasonable length of time.
[819] How does your wife feel about all this?
[820] Is she happy with you?
[821] Yes, she is.
[822] She is.
[823] Yeah, finally.
[824] You know, and she, and I get to now, sit with her as she heals the deeper layers of herself, you know, because these women in our culture, they're on guard, you know, and they're not a lot of valiant men holding space for them to be able to do the healing that they need to do.
[825] And that's my biggest honor is that I get to hold space for her to be the best mom she can be for my son.
[826] More kids on the horizon?
[827] Oh, yeah.
[828] Yeah.
[829] Right.
[830] So that's a plan.
[831] And that's a real possibility.
