[17] Growing up in New Zealand, most of what I absorbed about American life came from American TV and American movies.

[18] But there was nothing more weird and alien to me than watching American kids eating their American lunch at the American school cafeteria.

[19] Ugh, Salisbury soup again!

[20] My Joe isn't sloppy enough.

[21] Talk about wheat coffee!

[22] When I was growing up in New Zealand, there was no school cafeteria.

[23] You'd bring a pack lunch to school with you in your school bag.

[24] We didn't have school lockers either, so your bag would be as heavy as a St. Bernard dog, because it will be filled to the brim with textbooks and your school lunch.

[25] Come lunchtime, there's no school cafeteria, so kids just go outside and sit under a tree to eat the food they're brought from home.

[26] There were no tables of freaks or geeks or jocks because there were no tables, because there was no high school cafeteria.

[27] I wanted to learn what it's like for American school kids, because over 30 million of them a year are fed at the school cafeteria.

[28] To learn how all this works, I'd have to go to a high school cafeteria to witness the feeding frenzy firsthand.

[29] So, grab your tray and hope the lunch lady is serving up something delicious, because this is the school cafeteria episode.

[36] But maybe not good for the cholesterol.

[37] Just pack that smoothie in your handbag, take it in, suck it back in there.

[48] Yeah, we have both had health problems.

[49] My back, there's some disc issue going on.

[50] As I sit here right now, I'm on muscle relaxants and tramadol, and I'm actually feeling sweating and quite gross.

[51] So if I seem a bit out of it, I'm on all these drugs.

[53] So, Dax is revving up this really big buggy outside right now.

[54] Sometimes I think he's pranking us because he knows we're recording and he's like, I'm going to test this big buggy right outside the attic.

[56] The point is I'm like on all these drugs right now and I'm like, I'm so sweaty.

[57] It's disgusting.

[58] It's like my body's really going through it at the moment and I'm sit up like this in this position.

[59] I'm so sorry.

[60] You do look really uncomfortable.

[63] I'm like, no, honestly, I'm like, I'm perked up.

[65] So if you're like, I'm looking a bit sickly.

[78] What was your school lunch experience like?

[79] Oh, man. Take me through it.

[81] Well, first before we begin that, can I ask, what happened in New Zealand if someone couldn't afford to bring their own lunch?

[82] Because there's school lunch programs in the U .S. Do they have that?

[83] Yeah, well, no, in New Zealand, they do now.

[84] But they're not funded very well.

[85] But it's much better now than it was when I was at school.

[86] But it was a problem in New Zealand because kids would come to school without lunch.

[87] And they'd just be hungry.

[88] And when you're hungry, you obviously don't learn as well because you're just thinking I'm really hungry all the time.

[89] Well, also, I think also more.

[90] You don't have nutrients to fuel your brain.

[91] No, and no nutrients to operate your brain.

[92] Yeah.

[93] So some kids would have really hungry.

[94] really fancy lunches, and you'd look at them and be like, oh, my God, and everyone would trade.

[95] Yeah.

[96] Sometimes bullies would steal the nerds lunches if they had really good lunches.

[97] Yeah.

[98] But this whole idea of arriving at school and the school feeding you, when I was at school, which was a very long time ago, was just a whole foreign concept to me. And still, there'll be school lunch programs, but it's not like you walk into a cafeteria where you go, you form a line and they're serving out food to you.

[99] So what do they do?

[100] They give you a brown bag.

[101] A little bag.

[102] Oh, wow.

[103] Okay.

[104] So the cafeteria is where all the shit goes down.

[105] I mean, that is where the fights happen.

[106] That's where the gossip happens.

[107] That's where boyfriends ask girlfriends out and girlfriends ask boyfriends out and girlfriends ask boyfriends out.

[108] And there's clicks.

[109] There are tables.

[110] There's cool tables.

[111] There's not so cool tables.

[112] What was the consistency of your table when you would sit down?

[113] I was in a cool table.

[114] Were you on the cool table?

[115] That's so nice.

[116] Well, I was a scholar athlete.

[117] Okay.

[118] Your face when you said that.

[119] That sounds, I don't really know what that is, but it sounds really good.

[120] There are, you know, there are clicks and groups in high school.

[121] There's straight up popular.

[122] Then there's nerd, I guess, and there's burnout.

[123] This is all speaking very generically.

[124] No, we have to speak generically about this.

[125] There's kids who do.

[126] rule.

[127] There's the jocks.

[128] Yeah.

[129] No, no, no. The jocks are mainly in the popular.

[130] Oh, they're in the popular category.

[131] But then there is a niche category.

[132] Yeah.

[133] That we called scholar athletes.

[134] Which essentially...

[135] So you made this up.

[136] This is a made -up thing.

[137] No, don't you kind of get what I mean?

[138] I mean, it depends on high...

[139] Rough trying.

[140] Like, elementary school was...

[141] cafeteria was different.

[142] Oh, yeah.

[143] No, I'm talking in high school.

[144] middle school high school time when you're really coming into your own elementary school that we can't even that's like your class yeah and that's like you bring a thermos right you know once you're in high school you're not bringing a thermos anymore okay what was your table where were you rob I was always in the art room doing stuff during lunch I'd bring my food in there and making podcasts work on stuff oh you didn't sit in the cafeteria no we didn't have that option you couldn't go somewhere else for lunch you had to be in the cafeteria.

[145] Off campus lunch ever?

[146] No, no. That would be considered skipping.

[147] Oh, because we had junior and senior year we're allowed off campus lunch.

[148] Oh, fuck.

[149] No. What, you go to McDonald's or something?

[150] Or Arby's.

[151] Beef and cheddar.

[152] What kind of food did you get?

[153] Was your school good or bad?

[154] Well, because I wanted to blend so badly, I had a major phobia of walking around with a tray.

[155] To me, that's it's a recipe for disaster someone will trip you or I've seen prison movies exactly and then everyone stares at you and laughs and you're the butt of the joke for the rest of your high school you can't move forward from that once that's happened once you're socially out and so I always brought my lunch for that reason yes I never wanted to be the person who bought lunch except then in my senior year we ended up having these salads.

[157] That's healthy.

[158] It's very flawed thinking.

[159] They were like...

[160] Michelle Obama would approve.

[162] There were these little cups with basically shredded lettuce and like those stupid shredded carrots that aren't...

[163] Stupid shredded carrots.

[164] They're like not real carrots.

[165] And then ranch or whatever.

[166] And for some reason we all got into that for a bit.

[167] But let me go back to scholar athlete because it is critical.

[168] Scholar athletes were popular.

[169] But there was a crossover.

[170] We were both popular but also in good classes.

[171] Right.

[172] And normally we played a sport.

[173] That's why it's athlete.

[174] Right.

[175] So you covered the coolness and the sport and the academia.

[176] Exactly.

[177] So it's kind of its own niche.

[178] Like I didn't sit with the regular popular kids, but all those kids were my friends.

[179] Oh, so you were like a beautiful intermediary between all of those sort of groups in a way.

[180] I worked really hard at it.

[181] The best of all the worlds.

[182] I had to put in a lot of...

[183] be stressful every day.

[184] It was stressful.

[185] Oh my God.

[186] And this is what you have to do if you want to blend in.

[187] You have to not buy lunch.

[188] You have to be on your toes at all times, a risk of getting tripped in metaphorically and literally.

[189] It's a war zone at school.

[190] One event can change the rest of your year so easily.

[191] It is chaotic.

[192] I mean, I was a huge note at school.

[193] I had braces.

[194] I had really bad glasses.

[195] I had pimples.

[196] What age did you have braces?

[197] I had braces when I was 15, 16, 17.

[198] Oh, wow, that's late.

[199] Yeah, so it was late.

[200] So I was one of those kids that went on riacutane, which was that pimple medication, which like completely wrecks your entire body and I'll probably drop dead when I'm 50 or something.

[201] But it got rid of the pimples, which is good.

[202] Yeah.

[203] I was a huge, I wasn't a librarian.

[204] I was the nerdyer level up where I was called a computer monitor.

[205] And it was my job to look up to the computer rooms and make sure all the computers are running and all the kids were.

[206] During lunch?

[207] after.

[208] Oh no, just in general.

[209] I'm just saying, oh, but a lot of lunchtimes I was in the computer room.

[210] Oh, really?

[211] Absolutely.

[212] Yeah, because we didn't have cafeterias.

[213] So we would go off to the art room or the computer room or whatever.

[214] Or climb a tree or whatever.

[215] Did everyone at the whole school have lunch at the same time?

[216] Yes.

[217] So that was a different.

[218] My school was huge.

[219] Oh, so you'd stagger.

[220] We had, there was A, B, C, and D lunch.

[221] Oh, my God.

[222] That was mine.

[223] There was three lunch periods.

[224] Yeah.

[225] And they were quick.

[226] We had like 20 minutes or something for lunch, which is now in retrospect is not enough time.

[227] It's such a different experience that we had.

[228] Your lunch period was shorter than your regular period?

[229] I think.

[230] Because ours were just the same.

[231] That doesn't really make sense, does it?

[232] No. Fuck.

[233] Man, I forget stuff.

[234] It's a long time ago.

[248] So I had to call you because you remember it well, I'm sure.

[249] One thing I need to clarify, how long was our lunch period?

[250] I think it was very short.

[251] I think it was like 20 minutes.

[252] That's what I said.

[253] Maybe they had like two lunch periods per regular period.

[254] But then Rob made a good point that doesn't make sense.

[255] since they were staggered, wouldn't it have been the same amount as a normal period?

[256] Because how would they have done this?

[257] We had lunch and then we had the longer class that had home room in it, study hall or something.

[258] But it definitely wasn't the length of a full class.

[260] It was definitely shorter for us in our structure.

[261] But, yeah, I don't remember why.

[264] Now, what is your biggest memory of the lunchroom?

[265] The food fights.

[270] My biggest memory involves Callie.

[272] Remember when you had a contest in the lunchroom?

[273] Yes, I do.

[274] Cali eats, let's preface, really fast.

[275] All of a sudden, you look over, the whole lunch is gone.

[276] and she challenged this nice boy.

[277] He was annoying.

[278] He was annoying at the time, but now he's a very nice adult man, I think.

[279] So weird.

[280] He said he could eat faster than Cali.

[281] So there was a whole lunch dedicated at the end of the week to them having an eating contest.

[282] And what did you have to eat again?

[283] We had to eat sub sandwiches.

[284] Sub sandwiches.

[285] And how did it go?

[286] I lost miserably.

[287] And you blamed it on something, though.

[288] Well, I don't like mayonnaise, and his was covered in mayonnaise.

[289] And so I felt like he had an unfair advantage.

[290] The mayonnaise.

[291] The mayonnaise lubrication.

[292] Yeah.

[293] So these are the types of things that go down in the American cafeteria.

[294] I just wanted to bring you in as a fellow cafeteria mate.

[295] But also, do you think it's right to classify us as scholars?

[296] or athletes?

[297] You?

[299] No. Yes, you were.

[301] But you, yes, definitely.

[311] So lunch for us, we had an hour and you'd get your lunch in as quickly as you could and then go and play a game of sport.

[312] That wasn't me. I was straight to the computer room.

[313] And what did you do with the computer room during lunch?

[314] You play games?

[315] Just in like Microsoft Excel, making spreadsheets and stuff, trying to learn how to code.

[316] And it was real nerdy stuff.

[317] Do you know how to code?

[318] I did back then.

[319] But you don't.

[320] It's all gone now.

[321] Yeah, I used to be a real super nerd back then.

[322] I was building computers from the motherboard up.

[323] What were you coding?

[324] C, C++.

[325] Websites.

[326] No, just like software.

[327] I thought I was going to be a computer program when I grew.

[328] up, so I was trying to get into all that stuff.

[329] I was terrible at it, but I really tried.

[330] Oh.

[331] Anyway, for this documentary, I decided to go behind the scenes of a school cafeteria.

[332] And actually, Rob's friend hooked me up with us when we meet her in the episode.

[333] Oh, my gosh.

[334] And this is like a never -be -kissed situation where you pretended to be high school.

[335] I thought about it, but I also thought the creepy factor would be quite bad in that.

[336] That movie has aged quite badly.

[337] That's right.

[338] So, no, I just went in as me. Okay.

[339] But I will say, of all the episodes I've done, I found talking to high school kids the most nerve -wracking.

[340] I felt the most nervous.

[341] You know, we've met some sort of big, you know, baseball sort of stars and stuff on the show.

[342] And I felt more nervous talking to these kids.

[343] Oh, my God.

[344] It was like you had entered this old environment where you felt insecure.

[345] I was the nerd again.

[346] Yeah, you feel like the nervous.

[347] I had those braces.

[348] I had the pimples.

[349] I had the glasses.

[350] and I felt it, and I felt that they saw right through.

[351] Oh.

[352] And they did.

[353] Anyway, here we go.

[354] I'm excited.

[355] It was 7 a .m. on a Monday morning, and I had somewhere to be.

[356] A town called Hemet, to be exact, population 90 ,000, situated in the San Jacinto Valley and Riverside County, California.

[357] As well as being home to the International Headquarters of Scientology, a secret of fortress known as the Goals base, Hemet is also home to 23 ,000 school kids, and in less than five hours, they'd be eating lunch.

[358] Hi, my name is Kate Cloett.

[359] I'm Assistant Director of Nutrition Services for Hemet Unified School District.

[360] After a two -hour drive and a Starbucks coffee later, I'd arrived at a sprawling warehouse, with eat fresh express and blazoned onto the side.

[361] Kate is in charge of getting food to 26 schools and feeding about 23 ,000 students.

[362] She's a registered diet.

[363] dietitian and plans out all the menus.

[364] But school lunches have been around far before Kate came onto the scene.

[365] Back in the 1800s, certain schools in Boston and Philadelphia provided lunches for kids thanks to volunteers and charities.

[366] But it was the arrival of a giant war that saw school lunches become official in the USA.

[367] And with it, the arrival of the cafeteria.

[368] It's been around for a very long time, but it has definitely evolved.

[369] In about around the 1940s, that's when they had the, The School Nutrition Act is around World War II when the government was like, hey, all these really nutrition -deprived people are trying to go into the army, and they knew that they had to start feeding their kids better.

[370] And then also, they were like, hey, this is great because we can start promoting some of our domestic agriculture as well through the school food system.

[371] And has the food gotten better over that time?

[372] Some would say that it hasn't.

[373] It's gotten a lot more strict.

[374] Michelle Obama, she's the one that really kind of reformed a lot of the nutrition standards.

[375] But I am thrilled to be here with all of you today as my husband signs the Healthy, Hunger -Free Kids Act into law.

[376] Back in 2010, Michelle Obama stood radiantly next to her husband as he signed the Healthy Hunger -Free Kids Act.

[377] Suddenly, vending machine snacks and cans of Coke were under federal regulation, and school lunches were set to become a lot more healthy.

[378] We can all agree that in the wealthiest nation on earth, all children should have the basic nutrition they need to learn and grow and to pursue their dreams, because in the end, nothing is more important than the health and well -being of our children, nothing, and our hopes for their future should drive every single decision that we make.

[379] Decisions like making sure school cafeterias had fruit and vegetables, and that whole grain bread replaced white bread.

[380] The good old days of sodium, sugar, and fat were over.

[381] I mean, it was kind of the wild west.

[382] You could pretty much serve pop or sorry soda.

[383] Fried foods, there wasn't a lot of guidance there.

[384] When those reforms came through, were kids happy about that?

[385] Or was it like, oh, we like all this terrible junk food.

[386] We don't want to eat healthily.

[387] I think the adults like it a lot better than the kids do.

[388] And it did take a couple years for manufacturers to kind of adjust the formulas for a lot of the food that we serve in the schools to fit those nutrition standards.

[389] Everything has to be whole grain.

[390] We have to cut back on sodium, sugar.

[391] The first couple years after the standards got put into place, the food wasn't as good, but it's really gotten a lot better.

[392] Kate and I are briefly interrupted by a colleague who needs to discuss some new cardboard trays, as well as new packages for the sandwiches.

[393] There's a lot to think about when it comes to school cafeterias.

[394] And a kids generally embracing the school lunch, or do you get some kids that, like, in New Zealand would pack their lunch at home and, like, bring it in with them to eat?

[395] Does that ever happen?

[396] People do still pack their lunch.

[397] So we have 23 ,000 students, and we feed about 22 ,000 altogether, but that includes breakfast, lunch, and supper.

[398] So we serve all three of those.

[399] So we're doing about 22 ,000 meals a day.

[400] Kate leaves me out of her office and hands me a hairnet, which I struggle with for quite a while as I've never worn a hair net before.

[401] Then she opens a door and we walk into a giant industrial kitchen where school meals are being prepared for the week.

[402] Our staff starts at 5 a .m. and they start making stuff at 5 a .m. to go out to all of our schools.

[403] There are trays and trays of muffins in front of me and a woman shoving a thermometer into one of them to check the temperature.

[404] So just explain what I'm seeing here.

[405] This is our central kitchen, and not every district has a central kitchen.

[406] Our district is lucky enough to have one, and we can do a lot more freshly baked items.

[407] It smells good in here.

[408] Yes, so today they are making a blueberry pancake bowl, a breakfast item, and then you can see that they're wrapping it.

[409] We make really awesome double chocolate chip muffins here.

[410] We make our own Kaiser rolls, biscuits.

[411] I find the word biscuit confusing in America.

[412] Back home, a biscuit is a biscuit is a little.

[413] a cookie, like a chocolate chip cookie.

[414] Here in America, it's an uninspired dry scone.

[415] And then we're also known for our pizza.

[416] On Mondays, we don't do pizzas because that's when the dough is thawing, but we do about 250 pizzas Tuesday through Friday.

[417] And then they transport it to our schools, fresh baked.

[418] About 30 staff work here in the kitchen in Hemet, preparing a variety of meals that will then be delivered to a variety of schools.

[419] No, it's like a full industrial kitchen going on.

[420] This thing's huge.

[421] These are big mixers where we do our muffin dough.

[422] We have these things called peanut butter pails, which are pretty much like a giant peanut butter cookie for breakfast.

[423] These are giant mixers for our pizza dough.

[424] They hold up to, I believe, like 400 pounds of dough.

[425] And then these are big rotational ovens.

[426] So as you can see, it rotates to make sure all of our baked goods are evenly baked.

[427] Not all school districts have a kitchen this big.

[428] And of course, each school is fighting over funds for all this stuff, applying for grants to get the gear they need.

[429] Something I found fascinating about school lunches is that many of the American food brands have their own specific lines just for kids.

[430] They offer many of the same products, just a healthier version.

[431] Tyson is a really big one.

[432] They have a whole line of products that's just for schools.

[433] Same with like General Mills.

[434] So a lot of those brands that you might see in the grocery store, they will have.

[435] have a separate school line that's formulated specifically for schools.

[436] Whether that's whole grain, reduced sodium, reduced sugar, baked like baked Doritos.

[437] You don't really see those in the supermarket, but we serve those in school.

[438] I think of how picky kids can be and wonder how down they are with the flavor of a healthy Dorito.

[439] Doritos aren't even meant to be healthy.

[440] Is a healthy Doritos still even a Dorito?

[441] What's a common complaint you might get?

[442] Well, the kids, they always want more of, like, the snack items.

[443] They want tockis and ice cream.

[444] Tockeys?

[445] What's a to tachie?

[446] Taki, they're like the little rolled chips.

[447] Yeah, they're a type of chip that kids love.

[448] We do try to make some of their favorites more healthy, like our pizza, for example.

[449] They love it, but it's made with whole grain crust.

[450] We make our own pizza sauce.

[451] We even grate our own cheese.

[452] It's low -fat mozzarella.

[453] So we try to just make it healthier.

[454] Same with, like, chicken nuggets.

[455] We still serve those, but it's just whole -grain.

[456] grain, breading, and not fried.

[457] With all this talk of health, I'm surprised when I pass a giant rack of corn dogs, hundreds of them.

[458] What is this?

[459] Disneyland?

[460] That one, I believe, is a chicken hot dog inside.

[461] We try to pick items that are a little bit healthier.

[462] Like we use hot dogs, they're all beef, no nitrates.

[463] Kate leads me through another door, and we're in a sprawling warehouse space filled to the roof with boxes and cardins and packages.

[464] We're in the pantry.

[465] What have we got here?

[466] These are some chocolate chips.

[467] So one of our most popular items on the breakfast menu is our double chocolate chip muffin, which sounds unhealthy, but we put banana puree in it.

[468] We put applesauce, and again, it has no preservatives.

[469] It's made with whole grain flour.

[470] Do you put pineapple on your pizza or no?

[471] We don't, but we usually have that on our salad bars.

[472] I see giant crates of cheez -its.

[473] I don't know much about America, but I know J. Cheez -It's aren't the epitome of health.

[474] This is whole grain, so it's specially formulated for schools.

[475] There's even cinnamon toast crunch back here.

[476] This is specially formulated for schools.

[477] It's reduced sugar and whole grain.

[478] As we emerge out the other side and into the sunlight, I wonder why they don't serve the kids' version of all these American products to the rest of America.

[479] That'd probably be less heart attacks.

[486] And as far as our ethnicity of the community goes, we're about, I believe, 40 % Hispanic.

[487] So we are going to be going to West Valley.

[488] There's about 2 ,000 students there.

[489] So this is a high school?

[491] So grades 9 through 12.

[492] And what age is that?

[493] So roughly 14 -15 through 18.

[494] In New Zealand, we call this secondary school.

[495] Where we don't have grades, we have years.

[496] So it'll be year 9 through 13 for us.

[497] As we pull into the parking lot, my brain is replaying what I know of high school cafeterias, all learned from watching American TV.

[498] Who says that school cafeteria food can't be healthy, delicious, and gourmet?

[499] Today we're going to be making the students my tasty baked ziti with basil and fresh mozzarella.

[501] Then there's Napoleon Dynamite.

[504] And Mean Girls, which taught us about the various cliques found in the American school system.

[507] preps, JV Jocks, Asian nerds, cool Asians, varsity jocks, unfriendly black haughties, girls who eat their feelings, girls who don't eat anything.

[508] Now I'm finally here, the real thing, a real American high school with a real American high school name, West Valley.

[510] Walking down the hallway, it's just before lunch so it's quiet.

[511] And already it feels like a TV show.

[512] There's the lockers, the posters for class president, and all the social clubs you can join.

[513] And there it is, in front of me, Radiant, the high school cafeteria.

[516] You got very nervous when she raised the cardboard tray that they were trying out in their schools.

[551] I must have been living under, I mean, I was so naive, but I thought each cafeteria made its own food.

[552] I thought there was a kitchen and I assume so as well and it'll be out there doing that thing and some schools would like some schools would do that but this is serving I think she said in the end 27 schools or they're just heating it up because there was a kitchen at our cafeteria but I maybe they're just heating preparing it all they've definitely got yeah there's a background area where they can keep it warm and stuff and bring it out yeah I guess I just thought they were cooking it all back there which is so stupid she sent me through some stats she said for every meal they serve they get $4 $0 .92 cents reimbursement.

[553] That's from federal and state taxes.

[554] 48 % of that goes towards labor, 47 % towards food, supply, and costs, and the remaining 5 % goes to the building utility.

[555] So essentially, for food and packaging, we need to make a complete meal.

[556] That's entree, fruit, and vegetables, plus milk, plus packaging for $2 .32.

[557] So they're under, like, they're under, like, the gun to, like, make these meals for kids with not very much, which is kind of miraculous, they come out with.

[559] And they're trying to keep it healthy.

[692] It could probably be better, but I think anything could be better.

[713] As we talked about the high school experience, I wondered what they thought of America this country they were here reading themselves for readying themselves to go out and work and make change and do whatever they end up doing it's kind of troubled but at the same time I'm excited for like life in general just to like be positive I think half of us are doing okay but half of the kids here don't want to do anything therefore I'm worried about half of this future for us I made this observation a couple of days ago.

[714] I was talking with my dad.

[715] The kids who actually want to try are placed into college classes, but they're not really prepared for the college level for the work that it entails.

[716] And the kids that don't want to try are just put into normal classes where they can just fail and it wouldn't really matter.

[717] And I found it very unfair that I wanted to try, but I wasn't prepared.

[718] I'm a little bit skeptical in this economy.

[719] I can barely hold my own house if I wanted to, so I don't know.

[720] I'm skeptical about the future of America.

[721] It's definitely not amazing, but it's not bad, so it's just kind of like hanging out and see what happens.

[722] That's all you can do?

[723] Yeah, basically, yeah.

[724] I look out from my tray of borrowed chicken nugs.

[739] With lunchtime about to wrap, a few other kids have gathered around the microphone, and I figure this is the time to raise the question that's been on my mind this entire time, a question about the modern high school experience here in America.

[740] My only reference to American high school recently has been the HBO show Euphoria.

[741] How similar is the experience to Euphoria?

[742] Not at all.

[743] Not even close.

[744] Is that inaccurate?

[745] No, it's so inaccurate.

[746] It's so bad.

[748] Probably depends on who you're asking.

[749] For me it's not accurate at all, but I know there's like some friends who like smoke and stuff or like some friends who drink, yeah, and I also know that there's other people who've definitely screwed around with other people, but I wouldn't say it's like euphoria.

[750] I have never experienced anything like this show and I don't think that's like the actual high school experience.

[752] I do think that there is a lot of drug issues, in school, but it's not to that level.

[753] Not to that extent, in my opinion.

[754] I've seen people do drugs in class.

[766] With an attitude like that, I figure the future of America is in pretty good hands.

[767] And as I drove away from Hemet, I thought back to all the apples my mom, Pam, had packed into my high school lunch back in New Zealand.

[768] With no high school cafeteria, it was all on her.

[769] And it dawned on me how many.

[770] school lunches my mum had made for me over the years, hundreds of them, maybe thousands of them.

[771] So I decided to call her, FaceTiming, my dad picked up, trying to put the call on speaker.

[775] Technology figured out he got mum.

[776] Now, I had a question.

[777] I'm making a podcast episode at the moment about high school cafeterias in America.

[778] But then it occurred to me, of course, in New Zealand.

[779] Certainly when I went to school, we didn't have that.

[780] And I was mainly fed, thanks to years and years and years of my poor mother having to make my lunch for me. I know.

[781] I just, I've never really talked to you about that.

[782] And first I wanted to say thank you, which I don't think I've ever really said, because it's sort of dawning on to me on what a massive task that was.

[783] I know, and it's so good when it finishes.

[784] But it's just something that you had to do It was often hard to know For a bit of variety what to put in your jolly sandwiches I remember peanut butter and jam was a good one Yeah peanut butter and jam ham ham I might do some maths and calculate how many years I was at school And how many meals you would have made me You could calculate it from five years to 17 something like that, 17 years.

[826] It's the first time I'd have clocked in ages how old I've gotten.

[828] In my mind, I kind of stopped at like early 20s maybe.

[830] And suddenly being around kids everywhere.

[831] And there was a DJ DJing loudly and it was just so hectic.

[832] It made me feel so fucking old That part about the DJ We did not have music in the lunchroom I think there was some special thing going on It was Spirit Week Oh sure because leading up to the election And so they had some DJs And they were I sound like an alien describing what I saw As DJs and it's this musical chairs game I think maybe the DJs were trying to be Some sort of social presidents or something To like we're like this I don't know Fun Or it was a campaign bronze I'm going to bring DJs to lunch.

[833] And speaking of Wonderful Maddie, her campaign promise of just wanting to make things more fun?

[838] One other piece in America normally, your mom stops making your lunch at some point.

[844] With that known, my mom still had made my lunch.

[936] But they invented a luncheable's pizza at one point, and it was these tiny doze.

[937] Like, what is that?

[938] It was like a crust, but not really.

[939] Yeah.

[940] Yeah, it was just like chewing crust.

[941] And then you'd have a pouch of sauce that you put on.

[942] And shredded cheese.

[943] So you make your own pizza.

[944] I never did pepperoni, only did cheese.

[945] Because pepperoni could get, girls weren't supposed to like pepperoni.

[946] They had the dessert ones, too, with chocolate, icing, and M &Ms.

[948] Yeah, they had pizza dessert.

[949] I don't think I had that, but I had Dunkeroo's the first time I ever choked.

[951] But the luncheble's pizza in me. middle school, we had a microwave.

[952] So I would microwave the lunchebles pizzas at the school.

[953] I'm surprised I even did that.

[954] That seems outside my comfort zone, but I did.

[955] Where do you get luncheables from?

[956] From a grocery store.

[959] I'd never heard of this before.

[960] I can't believe you haven't heard of it.

[962] I wonder if people still take luncheables.

[963] The culture of school is so funny to me. The other thing I noticed walking around is that, of course, in America, you have lockers.

[964] And in New Zealand, at least when I went to school, there were no lockers, everything went in your school bag.

[965] All your books for the whole day.

[966] So you'd prep each morning, you'd take everything you need, and you would just have these little kids you'd see wandering around with just these huge backpacks.

[967] No lockers, like that's a huge difference.

[968] And then this whole cafeteria thing, DJs, we had vastly different experiences in our school, Monica.

[969] I know, it's really interesting.

[970] Lockers, I will say, are more romanticized in movies and TV shows.

[971] Because they're so big and kids open them and they lean on them and they're full of photos of who they've got to crush on and their books and stuff.

[972] And people get shoved into them and stuff.

[973] You put the nerds in the lockers and you lock them in there.

[974] And I mean, I think things are regional and cultural.

[975] So it all depends.

[976] My high school was constructed a little differently than most high schools.

[977] it was kind of laid out as a college campus.

[978] So we had five buildings.

[979] And so what sucked is if your locker was in the 200 building, you'd have a class in the 500 building, then you have to walk to the 100 building.

[980] You don't have time to stop by your locker.

[981] That sounds so big, like so vast.

[982] It was.

[983] And you had seven -minute changes.

[984] And so you were like rushing around and you didn't really have time to ever go to your locker.

[985] So us, we also just carried our whole fucking these insane, heavy books for the whole day you're just walking around with.

[986] Bad for the spine.

[987] It's probably why my spine is so messed up from those big buddy book bags.

[988] You could sue.

[989] American suing.

[990] Jan Spore was the cool bag of choice.

[991] We talked about this before.

[992] Jan Sport, that was awesome.

[993] The other main difference that I clocked that I hadn't really thought about, in New Zealand, most schools have a uniform.

[994] So everyone looks like a student.

[995] And I think that's partly what I found someone intimidating with these kids is they were all dressed cool cool yeah that's what made me a bit nervous and like so on edge the idea of a uniform is that all the kids are the same so the fashionable kids the nerdy kids no one's going to get teased for like not having the cool shoes because you're all in the same shitty uniform yeah because the new zealand uniforms are also really really expensive so it's kind of like taking the mickey in a way and some parents are like we're sick of spending so much money on these shitty clothes right that they can't wear otherwise Yeah, completely, only at school.

[996] So in America, uniforms aren't really a thing, right?

[997] They are.

[998] Private schools will do it.

[999] Catholic schools, definitely do it.

[1000] So some schools, but mostly and definitely public schools, no. But there was dress code.

[1001] The big thing I remember from my school was girls had to have their skirts a certain length.

[1002] I couldn't be showing too much.

[1003] Fingertips, that was ours.

[1004] Can't be shorter than your fingertips.

[1005] People would, like, scrunch up their shoulders, though, to make it.

[1006] Oh, that's nice.

[1007] Get attention.

[1008] People have like really long legs.

[1009] The bodies are different.

[1010] I feel like that's not a universal measurement tool.

[1011] The other thing that I really glossed over is that Hammett, where I was, when I went to that Starbucks, I bumped into someone that listens to the show, and she was like really lovely, but she said, are you here for Scientology?

[1012] I'm like, I'm doing a story about school lunches, and I'm going to go to high school, and she said, oh, the gold base is here, and I'm like, what?

[1013] And the gold base is essentially the headquarters of Scientology.

[1014] No. And it is the compound.

[1015] So here in L .A., you've got the Celebrity Center and you've got that big iconic blue building.

[1016] Yes.

[1017] Gold Base is the one which all the mystery surrounds it.

[1018] And I just lifted a few facts off the Wikipedia page.

[1019] It's a heavily guided compound, 50 buildings surrounded by high fences topped with blades and watched around the clock by patrols, cameras, and motion detectors.

[1020] Scientology leader David Miscavage, senior church officials, and up to a thousand of the church's elite C -org live and work on the base.

[1021] It's the location of a $10 million mansion built for Al Ron Hubbard.

[1022] And that's where they have that famous thing that they talk about the whole, which is that facility where they basically put members to retrain them.

[1023] Yeah.

[1024] And so I drove past, and it's a public.

[1025] road that goes past but you drive by and suddenly you just see these big quite like it's almost like you're driving past a theme park there's this thing that looks a bit like a castle there's razor wire all along the top wow and i drove into one of the big main entrances and i looked up and there was camera camera camera camera and the security guard absolutely looked at me and because he'd get used to people pulling in all the time locked eyes made like a look that felt Like, I see you.

[1026] Because I was originally thinking, well, I go up and, like, say, hello and say, like, what is this?

[1027] Yes.

[1028] And I was like, uh -uh.

[1029] It's like, I just drove around and, like, turned back.

[1030] Oh, it was too creepy.

[1031] It was full noise.

[1032] And it's in Hemet.

[1033] And Hemet is, as you heard, it's just this sleepy, small town, a lot of trailer parks and the headquarters of Scientology.

[1034] Oh, you know what actually makes me so angry?

[1035] Mm -hmm.

[1036] Of course it's there.

[1037] If that is a low -income area, they are preying upon vulnerable people and saying, I can get you out of this situation, come to science.

[1038] That is what they do.

[1039] That's why the Celebrity Center is right there.

[1040] We are always yet recruiting people who are like trying to figure it out.

[1041] Sag question mark, trying to get it.

[1042] The most vulnerable people in this city who are dying to become actors are like, yeah, I want to be sad.

[1043] You get drawn in.

[1044] Yeah, if you want to go down a real rabbit hole, Google Gold Base, and this just the maddest things ever.

[1045] It's like, yeah, it was so funny.

[1046] I thought I'm in this town doing a story about school lunches and there is gold base sitting right there.

[1047] Are they trying to recruit at the high school?

[1048] No, no recruiting.

[1049] I think it's more like where all their biggest, most important members go.

[1050] You look at it in Google Maps and it's this sprawling beautiful country club in the middle of this really poor neighborhood.

[1051] You know, it's not that far out of L .A., and it's probably cheap to buy And it's just huge and massive and epic.

[1053] Anyway, I just, I breezed over there in the dock, and it was just so strange that it was there.
