Morning Wire XX
[0] I'm DailyWire, editor -in -chief John Bickley, with Georgia Howe.
[1] It's Thursday, October 5th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
[2] The Biden administration will begin building some of the southern border wall, the same wall it once blasted as not a serious solution.
[3] Here with the details is Daily Wire reporter, Zach Jewell.
[4] This week, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it will be waiving 26 federal laws through power granted by Congress to construct a border wall in Star County, Texas.
[5] That's the Rio Grande Valley sector where there have been over 245 ,000 migrant encounters in this fiscal year alone.
[6] In his announcement, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that it is, quote, necessary to waive certain laws to ensure the construction of the border wall.
[7] Opposing the wall was one of Biden's signature issues on the campaign trail and in office.
[8] Shortly after his inauguration in January of 2021, President Biden stopped construction of the border wall after promising as a candidate that there would not be another foot of wall constructed in my administration.
[9] Biden condemned Trump's construction of a wall along the southern border as misplaced priority and a failure to manage migration in a safe, orderly, and humane way.
[10] Now the White House is saying that they have to use the appropriated funds from Congress by law to build the structure.
[11] What I can say is that there's a law that the DHS is complying with.
[12] We believe in the rule of law and that's what we're moving forward to with.
[13] House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio said this week that if he becomes the next Speaker of the House, he's against sending another aid package to Ukraine.
[14] Why should we be sent an American tax dollar to Ukraine when we don't even know what the goal is?
[15] No one can tell me what the objective is.
[16] Is it some kind of negotiated peace?
[17] Is it driving them out of the eastern Ukraine?
[18] Is it driving them out of Crimea, which they've had for 10 years now?
[19] Until you can tell me the goal, I don't think we should continue to send money there, particularly when we have the problems we have on our border.
[20] George's remarks come after Congressman Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the role of speaker following an historic vote on Tuesday led by Florida Republican Matt Gates.
[21] So far, the only other Republican to announce his run for the job has been House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana.
[22] An 18 -year -old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of Brooklyn community activist Ryan Thorson Carson.
[23] Carson was stabbed on the street while waiting for a bus with his girlfriend at 3 .50 a .m. on Monday morning.
[24] No motive has been released, but the suspect has been described as mentally disturbed by family and has a reported history of threatening behavior.
[25] The wife of indicted New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, Nadine Menendez, reportedly hit and killed a man with her car in 2018 while driving in New Jersey.
[26] The incident would later lead to her acquisition of a 2019 Mercedes -Benz that prosecutors alleged was part of a bribery scheme.
[27] Daily Wire's senior editor Cabot Phillips has more.
[28] The incident occurred in December of 2018 while Nadine was driving through a poorly lit area at night and resulted in the near instant death of 49 -year -old Richard Coop.
[29] Just days after that crash, Nadine allegedly reached out to a businessman connected to the senator about her need for a new car.
[30] Prosecutors claimed Senator Menendez came to an agreement with that unnamed businessman, agreeing to, quote, intervene with a federal prosecutor to influence the prosecution of the New Jersey defendant in exchange for a car.
[31] An American fighter jet reportedly shot down a Turkish drone in Syria on Wednesday.
[32] Military sources told Reuters that the flying device was deemed a threat to U .S. forces in northeast Syria.
[33] It's the first time in history that the U .S. has shot down an aircraft from Turkey, which is a NATO ally.
[34] And amid growing legal pressure, California repealed a misinformation law this week that attempted to punish doctors who gave information about COVID -19 that the state deemed false.
[35] The law, which went into effect in January, empowered the state's medical board to revoke licenses of any physicians who did not parrot what they called, quote, contemporary scientific consensus on COVID.
[36] The law was quickly suspended by a federal judge and face being fully struck down in federal court before California Democrats repealed it this weekend.
[37] It's unclear if any doctor was ever punished as a result of the now defunct law.
[38] Those are your drive home updates this afternoon.
