Morning Wire XX
[0] I'm Daily Wire, editor -in -chief John Vickley, with Georgia Howe.
[1] It's Thursday, September 14th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
[2] Hunter Biden was officially indicted today on two counts by special counsel David Weiss for allegedly lying about his drug usage on a federal form when purchasing a gun in 2018.
[3] He also faces one count of being under the influence of narcotics while using a firearm.
[4] It's the first time a current or former president's son has been federally indicted.
[5] Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, is working with members of his own party to craft an agreement to continue funding the federal government to avoid a shutdown.
[6] The government is set to run out of money on September 30th, but some members want McCarthy to use the power of the purse to hold the Biden administration accountable for a litany of issues.
[7] McCarthy met with his conference today and afterwards spoke to the press.
[8] Nobody wins in a government shutdown.
[9] But what we want to do is we want to be able to win the policies that we've been fighting for and telling the American public.
[10] We want to make sure our border becomes secure.
[11] We want to stop the runaway spending.
[12] We've been able to save quite a bit.
[13] We've been able to save quite a bit.
[14] The judge presiding over the Georgia election case involving former President Donald Trump has ordered that 17 defendants in the case be tried separately.
[15] 17 defendants, including Trump, will not be tried alongside defendants Kenneth Cheesebro and Sidney Powell on October 23rd.
[16] Cheesebro and Powell have opted for speedy trials.
[17] Sixteen of the 17 other defendants in the case have until October 22nd to waive their right to a speedy trial, something former President Trump has already done.
[18] The judge did not rule out the possibility of future trial divisions.
[19] Time is ticking for the car industry's big three, General Motors, Ford and Stalantis, to agree to a new contract with the United Auto Workers Union.
[20] The current contract expires at midnight tonight, but so far neither side has been able to come to an agreement.
[21] The UAW is demanding a 40 % pay raise for its members over the next four years, a four -day work week, automatic pay raises tied to inflation and other changes.
[22] If a deal isn't reached, more than 140 ,000 workers could begin targeted strikes starting tomorrow.
[23] UAW President Mike Fain released a video to union members today.
[24] We are preparing to strike these companies in a way they've never seen before.
[25] But this plan only works if the locals who are called to strike and do so.
[26] And if the locals who are not yet called do not strike and keep working.
[27] This is going to create confusion for the companies.
[28] On Wednesday, a federal judge in Texas ruled against the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, saying that the policy, which provides, prevents people who are brought illegally into the U .S. as children from being deported was unconstitutional.
[29] Here with more as Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce.
[30] In his 40 -page opinion for the Southern District of Texas, federal judge Andrew Hannon ruled that the executive branch cannot usurp congressional authority.
[31] More than half a million illegal immigrants have been shielded from deportation because of the Obama -era rule, which was later adopted and amended by the Biden administration.
[32] The fate of DACA will likely be determined by the Supreme Court, which barred the Trump administration from ending the program in a 5 -4 vote in 2020.
[33] The Biden administration said it was disappointed by the decision, adding that it would push Congress to pass DACA -style legislation.
[34] After a Wisconsin judge ruled in July that a state law from 1849 does not outlaw abortion, Planned Parenthood announced it would resume offering abortions next week in the Badger state.
[35] The organization stopped performing the procedures in 2022 after the Supreme Court of the United States struck down Roe v. Wade, reverting the issue back to the states.
[36] Prolifers argued that the 1849 law in question made abortion illegal.
[37] The issue will continue to be challenged in state court.
[38] Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that his administration is looking at the prospect of starting, quote, municipally owned grocery stores.
[39] Daily Wire investigative reporter Marita Lorty has more.
[40] The government -controlled stores will be placed in certain urban areas of the city where private grocery chains have either failed or have not established shops for one reason or another.
[41] Johnson says the move may be needed to eliminate, quote, food deserts.
[42] The new mayor added, all Chicagoans deserve to live near convenient, affordable, healthy grocery options.
[43] The city would use certain grants and private public partnerships for the efforts, according to Johnson's policy advisor, Umi Grisbee.
[44] What we're also going to be able to access is the funding that exists at the national level, at the state level, and so it's not necessarily about profitability.
[45] it really is about what is the impact on Chicagoans.
[46] Coastal New England is preparing for heavy winds, rainfall, and surf this Saturday as Hurricane Lee travels up the Atlantic.
[47] Though it is not expected that the storm will directly hit the coast, many areas can expect wind gusts between 40 and 50 miles per hour with wind topping 60 plus in northern Maine.
[48] Beach erosion is expected through the region as well as coastal flooding.
