Morning Wire XX
[0] A string of attacks on crisis pregnancy centers and churches over the past month has prompted the DHS to issue a heightened threat warning.
[1] We have the details on the attacks and how the White House is responding.

[21] Violence and vandalism aimed at churches and crisis pregnancy centers has escalated since the leak of the Supreme Court draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade.
[22] Daily Wire reporter Mary Margaret O 'Lean has been reporting on these increased threats, and she joins us now.
[23] Mary Margaret, what kind of attacks and violence are we seeing, and how frequent are they?
[24] Well, over the past month, since the release of the leaked Supreme Court document, we have seen dozens of attacks on churches, pregnancy centers, and pro -life organizations.
[25] Crisis pregnancy centers typically provide free health care services, adoption referrals, as well as resources like diapers and formula.
[26] Now, these attacks typically happen at night, and they involve graffiti, slogans including Jane was here or fake clinic or force birth is murder.
[27] A review conducted by the Morning Wire found that in addition to 12 pregnancy centers, at least 11 churches have also been targeted with protests and vandalism.
[28] Some of the worst attacks include firebombings with Molotov cocktails.
[29] The Family Action Center in Madison, Wisconsin, that was set on fire and the threat if abortions aren't safe, then neither are you, was spray painted on the wall.
[30] And Compass Care in Buffalo, New York was also firebombed and destroyed.
[31] The activist group, Jane's Revenge, has claimed responsibility for a majority of these attacks.
[32] I spoke with Capitol Hill Crisis Pregnancy Center Director Janet Durek, whose clinic was vandalized last week.
[33] I'm very sad that people don't understand what we do and how it helps so many.
[34] Does it make you feel unsafe at all?
[35] I mean, at this point, not terribly unsafe, but a certain amount of trepidation.
[36] There are people who don't like the fact that people who choose life have a place to go.
[37] During that same period of time, we've also seen activists gathering to disrupt Mother's Day weekend masses in Los Angeles and in New York.
[38] And Republicans have urged the Department of Justice to investigate these instances as religious hate crimes.
[39] Now, just this past week, the Department of Homeland Security issued a warning about a heightened threat environment due to political extremists, and they specifically mentioned churches as a potential target.
[40] What other targets did they mention?
[41] Right.
[42] So the Department of Homeland Security said that a variety of public gathering places may face increased risks.
[43] They mentioned churches, schools, religious minorities, as well as media organizations and ideological opponents.
[44] And earlier in May, a leaked DHS memo showed that government officials were investigating threats to the justices, the clerks, to places of worship, and to abortion clinics.
[45] And this is all specifically related to the Roleek.
[46] The most alarming incident thus far is, of course, the would -be assassin, 26 -year -old Nick.
[47] Roski, who was arrested near Justice Kavanaugh's home on Wednesday night.
[48] The suspect was carrying a gun with two magazines of ammunition, a knife, and burglary tools, and he said that he had planned to kill Kavanaugh to stop him from ruling on abortion or on Second Amendment decisions.
[49] Despite the thwarted assassination, protesters still gathered outside of Kavanaugh's home that very night, which underscores just how contentious this issue is right now.
[50] Now, where do things stand right now with that legislation that was intended to protect the justices.
[51] So the Senate unanimously passed the legislation that would offer increased security to the justices and to their families.
[52] That bill is currently stalled in the House.
[53] House Speaker Nancy Pelosi initially delayed a vote saying that law enforcement should handle the threats on a case -by -case basis, but the vote is expected to happen next week now.
[54] Her office did not return my request for comment on this point, but they did confirm that she denounces the attack on Justice Kavanaugh.
[55] Now, the White House has condemned both the attacks on pregnancy centers, as well as the attack on Justice Kavanaugh.
[56] Here's White House Press Secretary, Corrine Jean -Pierre.
[57] The president condemns the actions of this individual, attempts to intimidate justices have no place in our society.
[58] All right, well, Mary Margaret, thanks so much for reporting.
[59] Thank you.

[66] The bid for Latino voters is heating up.
[67] Until recently, Democrats banked on the block to routinely show up at the polls and check all the blue boxes.
[68] But with President Biden's poll numbers continuing to plummet as inflation soars, Republicans stand to peel off a large chunk of the group heading into the midterm elections.
[69] Now, new media outlets are arising on both sides of the political aisle to battle for those Hispanic voters.
[70] Joining to discuss is Daily Wire Culture Reporter, Megan, Basham.
[71] So, Megan, I know there's been a lot of movement on the Spanish language media front.
[72] Let's start with conservatives.
[73] What are the folks on the right doing to sway Latinos to their side?
[74] Well, they're doing a lot of talking.
[75] The first conservative Spanish language network just launched a couple of months ago on Sirius XM.
[76] Now, fitting the network, which is called Americano, broadcasts out of Miami, a city with a very large Cuban population that does typically vote Republican.
[77] So with its satellite connection, they're aiming for the whole country now, though.
[78] And over the summer, they've been rolling out TV streaming over social media.
[79] So Americano figures it has a large audience to tap into.
[80] Just last year, President Joe Biden held a two to one advantage to Trump at the polls.
[81] But a Quinnipiac poll, shows 60 % of Hispanics now disapprove of the job Joe Biden is doing.
[82] Now, polling shows that, contrary to the conventional wisdom, Hispanic voters largely don't approve of weak borders.
[83] And new data from the Wall Street Journal actually indicates that Latinos living along the border have shifted significantly to the right between 2016 and 2020.
[84] Right, we've tracked some of those shifts and they're rather dramatic.
[85] Have Democrats changed their messaging to Latinos in response?
[86] Well, you have to say they're definitely ramping up outreach, and there's a lot of donor money being thrown at that.
[87] As you might expect, a familiar name is popping up left and right, and that's billionaire liberal activist George Soros.
[88] He bankrolled a group of Hispanic investors to buy up 18 radio stations in 10 cities.
[89] So that's definitely putting Republicans on the defensive.
[90] This was Florida's Republican lieutenant governor, Jeanette Nunez, talking about the Soros development on Newsmax.
[91] week.
[92] Hispanic voters, the one thing they care about most is being able to live out the American dream.
[93] So when George Sorrows and all his cronies scoff at the American dream, that is when Hispanic voters wake up, they realize what he's about, and they're not going to stand for his propaganda and for his desire to control the narrative.
[94] Now, Latina Media Network was started by a former Obama staffer, Stephanie Valencia, and Jess Morales, Ricketto, who had stints working for both Obama and Hillary Clinton.
[95] So they made the deal for $60 million, and there's some big names, obviously big money involved.
[96] And one of the stations they gobbled up is Radio Mambi, a top talk radio station in Miami.
[97] So Democrats have long accused that anti -communist station of spreading what they call misinformation.
[98] And so they effectively took out a big media player on the right right there in South Florida.
[99] Now, Latinos have been a bedrock constituency for Democrats for a long time.
[100] What are the chances of that actually changing?
[101] Well, you know, as you mentioned earlier, inflation has skyrocketed to the top of concerns for Latinos.
[102] So that's good news for Republicans.
[103] And more good news is the latest Axios -Ipsos Latino poll that shows Hispanics trust the Republicans more on the economy.
[104] So Latino voters now make up about 12 .5 % of the population, a significant shift to the right.
[105] would really be crushing for Democrats.
[106] And I guess you can see from that why each side is taking that demographic so seriously now.
[107] As they should.
[108] Thanks, Megan.
[109] Always a pleasure.
[110] That was Daily Wire Culture Reporter, Megan Basham.
[111] A recent study confirms what many have long believed.
[112] Playing team sports is good for kids' mental health.
[113] Here to give us the details is DailyWire's Charlotte Pence Bond.
[114] So Charlotte, tell us about this study.
[115] Sure.
[116] So Dr. Matt Hoffman of California State University analyzed data on the sports habits and mental health of more than 11 ,000 children ages 9 to 13.
[117] The data was self -reported by parents and guardians who filled out a child behavior checklist, which asked questions about signs of depression, anxiety, or social withdrawal.
[118] Children were broken up into four groups, kids who participated in team sports, kids who played both individual and team sports, children who played individual sports only and children who did not play sports.
[119] Team sports included soccer and basketball where individual sports included things like tennis, gymnastics, and wrestling.
[120] And the results were published in the plus one journal.
[121] So what were the results?
[122] Well, surprisingly, the only category that led to a positive effect on mental health came from playing team sports.
[123] The top line results are that kids who played team sports had much better mental health than kids who played individual sports and kids who did not play any sports.
[124] Surprisingly, kids who did not play any sports had better mental health than kids who played individual sports.
[125] So individual sports are associated with worse mental health outcomes.
[126] Exactly.
[127] Kids who played team sports scored a 10 % lower in anxiety in depression, 19 % lower on measures of depression, 17 % lower on measures of social problems, and 12 % lower on attention problems as compared to kids who did not play any sports.
[128] Another interesting finding, girls who played sports, both team sports and individual sports, were also less likely to show rule -breaking behavior than their non -sport counterparts, but that effect was not seen in boys.
[129] Surprisingly, the study found that playing an individual sport led to a higher incidence of mental health issues compared to those who didn't play any sports.
[130] Children who played individual sports scored 16 % higher on the anxious depressed scale and 14 % higher on withdrawn depressed scale.
[131] Plus, they had 12 % more social problems.
[132] 14 % more attention problems.
[133] The researchers pointed out, though, that other studies have shown that playing individual sports can be good for mental health and is even linked to less social phobia and symptoms of panic in young adults.
[134] So they said more research is needed on that front.
[135] Importantly, the study also doesn't assert anything about causality.
[136] There may be differences in the temperament between kids who go out for soccer versus tennis, for example.
[137] Now, you mentioned gymnastics as an individual sport that's associated with higher anxiety.
[138] Now, I'm just, I'm just thinking within the last year we saw Simone Biles make headlines for dropping out of the Olympics over mental health issues.
[139] Right.
[140] The issue got a lot of attention when that happened.
[141] And interestingly, Biles cited an intense pressure to achieve perfection as one of the reasons for her mental breakdown.
[142] I wouldn't even say it started in Tokyo.
[143] I feel like it was probably a little bit deeper rooted than that.
[144] I think it was just a stress factor.
[145] Kind of built up over time and it just, my body and my mind just said no. Other Olympic level athletes, including gold medal winning swimmer Michael Phelps has spoken up about the pressure of competition.
[146] Swimming is another example of an individual sport.
[147] Dr. Sue Varma, a board -certified psychiatrist who works with children, spoke to News Nation about the virtues of playing team sports at a young age.
[148] You gain a sense of community, a sense of cohesion, a sense of togetherness, your social skills are better, you have to negotiate, you are relying on other people for your success.
[149] She also explained why playing individual sports could lead to adverse mental health outcomes.
[150] Perhaps because there is more pressure because you are the individual.
[151] You're the sole person responsible for both the success and the losses.
[152] And that if you don't do well, quote, a person feels like it's all my fault.
[153] Fascinating.
[154] Well, Charlotte, thanks so much for reporting.
[155] Thanks for having me on.
[156] That was Daily Wires, Charlotte Pence Bond.
[157] Another story we're tracking this week.
[158] Pools and beaches across the country are experiencing a lifeguard shortage.
[159] Authorities in Austin, Texas said they have not found lifeguards for half of the 750 rolls, and in Cincinnati, only eight of 23 pools were able to open due to low staff.
