My Favorite Murder with Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark XX
[0] This is exactly right.
[1] Welcome to my favorite murder.
[2] The minisote.
[3] It's Mimi.
[4] It's so tiny.
[5] It's so tiny.
[6] It's fit to your pocket.
[7] Oh my God.
[8] What's happening?
[9] What is happening?
[10] What's happening to us?
[11] What is happening?
[12] We read you your stuff at you.
[13] You know.
[14] That's Georgia hard start.
[15] Oh, Karen Kilgarra .com.
[16] Talk about my email address.
[17] If you want to write to Georgia, it's .com.
[18] It's a Georgia hard start at Karen Kilgariff .com.
[19] And please, please go to stephen Raymorest .gov to vote early and often.
[20] We want to go first?
[21] Let's do it.
[22] The subject line of this is nurse slash badass story.
[23] Great.
[24] Hey, pandemic pals.
[25] A few episodes ago, you guys asked for nurse mom stories.
[26] And while I'm not a mom, I am a nurse.
[27] I work in a very busy ER in Houston.
[28] I have so many stories, but I thought you guys would appreciate this badass survivor story.
[29] Let's get into it.
[30] Early one morning, a woman was brought into the trauma bay after being held hostage, raped, and beat for almost two days.
[31] I can only imagine what this poor woman went through.
[32] On the second day, her attacker let her have some privacy and use the bathroom.
[33] While in the bathroom, the woman mustered up the courage to attempt to escape.
[34] She took the ceramic toilet tank lid and hit it behind her back.
[35] When her attacker opened the bathroom door, she hit him over the head with it, knocking him unconscious.
[36] Oh, my.
[37] Yeah, starting out strong.
[38] Holy so good.
[39] Mad props to the woman for having the bravery and wits about her to use a toilet lid as a weapon.
[40] Hell yes.
[41] She ran for her dear life, flagged down help on a nearby road, and was promptly brought to RER.
[42] A few hours later, another patient was.
[43] brought into the trauma bay.
[44] This man had sustained numerous facial fractures after being being hit on the head with, yep, you guessed it, a toilet lid.
[45] The attacker and the victim were in the same trauma bay, and neither of them had any idea.
[46] What are the chances?
[47] Houston is the fourth biggest city in America, and these two end up in the same ER in adjacent rooms.
[48] What the fuck?
[49] It literally says that next.
[50] Good.
[51] That's correct.
[52] This same thing happened.
[53] happened in the British series with the hot guy and Gillian Anderson Oh, the the blank.
[54] The blank.
[55] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[56] So many people are screaming.
[57] It's called the hot guy and Julian Anderson.
[58] The fall.
[59] The fall.
[60] Yes, Stephen.
[61] Stephen gets $5.
[62] Remember that, that happened in the fall.
[63] I didn't see it.
[64] I didn't see it.
[65] He gets brought it.
[66] I'm pretty sure.
[67] And you see the victim watch him get rolled in.
[68] And I was like, never.
[69] That would never happen.
[70] Well, it did.
[71] I was wrong.
[72] Luckily, our charge nurse is amazing and put two and two together quickly.
[73] We were able to move the woman to a safe room in another part of the ER before she was further traumatized by seeing her attacker again.
[74] We obviously did not let her know that her attacker was in the same building.
[75] Can you imagine the sheer terror of escaping a brutal attack only to find out your attacker is right down the hall?
[76] Thankfully, the woman was able to be discharged home later that day and the man went to jail after we treated his injuries.
[77] Hope you guys like my survivor story as much as I do.
[78] Anyways, I love you guys.
[79] Your podcast has provided some much -needed distraction during this pandemic.
[80] Wear your freaking masks, people.
[81] SSDGM.
[82] Tiff.
[83] When would you not listen to a nurse?
[84] Okay.
[85] This one is called The Time My Grandma Saw the Devil.
[86] And I'm not going to read you the rest of it.
[87] But it's from our friend of the family, Celine Beth Calderon, the Ted Bundy documentary friend who was on stage, I remember.
[88] She's awesome.
[89] She says, hey, y 'all, since there's been a request for grandparent stories, I finally got all the information about the time my aunt and grandmother saw El Diablo walking past their home in Monterey Park, California.
[90] In 1985, a man was terrorizing neighborhoods across Southern California and seemed to frequent the East Los Angeles area.
[91] As Georgia mentioned in her zootsuit riot story, this part of Los Angeles was heavily populated by Latinos.
[92] one afternoon my aunt and grandmother were doing some work in the garage and noticed a man walking past their house my grandma said she froze and could feel evil radiating off of him my aunt then looked up and felt the same feeling she also claims a crow then cod but lull i'm not sure on that one but clearly the whole family has cinematic tendencies so they know how to tell a good story the crow was like man that guy is scary he's creeping me out and I'm a crow right guys well well they could not figure out how and why this man could give us such a bad vibe they continued on their work the next morning on July 7th one street over Joyce Nelson who was 61 was beaten to death in her home where she lived this was the third murder in their neighborhood in under three months a few months later my in my uncle's hometown a boy Heights, Richard Ramirez was captured by a mob of residence on August 31st, which is today.
[93] Oh, this is the anniversary of the citizens of Boyle Heights rising up together and running through the streets and tackling Richard Ramirez and catching the nightstocker themselves.
[94] On their own.
[95] Incredible.
[96] Happy anniversary.
[97] Boyle Heights.
[98] That's right.
[99] Well, my five.
[100] Thank you.
[101] Go high five of Boyle Heights resident.
[102] Um, while my uncle wasn't part of capture, he still remembers seeing people fleeing to the scene.
[103] I grew up always hearing the story of when my aunt and grandmother saw El Diablo, but I always thought it was actually the devil himself.
[104] Growing up Catholic, you know?
[105] Sure.
[106] I didn't find out it was Richard Ramirez until I told my family I would be starting a project on Ted Bundy.
[107] With blank stares and confusions, my mother responded, why would you pick him and not Richard Ramirez?
[108] We were all scared for our lives during that time.
[109] Come to find out, Ramirez killed in almost every single neighborhood that my family members lived in at the time.
[110] From Montebello to Mission Viejo, Whittier, Rosemede, Monterey Park, and finally ending his spree in Boyle Heights.
[111] Then I was finally given the context of the Diablo story.
[112] And just recently, my aunt told me her version.
[113] So she always thought it was the devil.
[114] She didn't put it yet.
[115] I was picturing a guy walking with a really nice, maybe it's a bit werewows of London of me, but in a really nice shark skin suit, but on a little tiny hoof feet walking by.
[116] Kind of hot.
[117] My grandmother Esperanza passed away in 2005, so I was never able to hear the full story from her, but don't worry, she played a big role in my interest in true crime since she purchased those super graphic Latino magazines that would show the most obscene content on the cover, like when Selena was murdered and there was a picture of her on the autopsy table showing the gunshot wound.
[118] No. And she says, the joys of a Latinx childhood.
[119] Anyway, stay sexy and make sure to search your family's history with well -known serial killers before you research the wrong one.
[120] Sending lots of hugs to you all during this friend of the pod, Celine, Beth, Calderon.
[121] Good one, right?
[122] Celine, nice.
[123] Celine needs to make a documentary about Richard Ramirez now.
[124] That's right.
[125] Dedicated to Esperanza.
[126] That's right.
[127] Esperanza.
[128] What a great name.
[129] So good.
[130] But oh, man, that's, I really, I mean, I just love that story of just like, they spotted him.
[131] They knew who it was.
[132] They were just like, ran him down and get that guy.
[133] They're killing your neighbors, you know, and terrorize and like old people.
[134] I mean, just a horror show.
[135] Okay.
[136] This subject line is espresso martinis and a hometown hitman.
[137] Fun.
[138] What's up, guys?
[139] As a murderino and a bartender, the recent chat about espresso.
[140] Martini's finally gave me an excuse to email the general recipe has equal parts vodka coffee liqueur you were right Georgia and a shot of espresso they combine all the fun of being drunk with the joy of having the caffeine jitters they're super popular in Australia and New Zealand so naturally the pretentious hipster bartenders think they're kind of trashy onto my hometown I'm from Canberra City with a nationwide reputation for being boring and small but we have some pretty cool bars.
[141] There's a popular one in the middle of the city known for its fun tropical vibes.
[142] Think teaky drinks, palm leaves, and lots of hens parties.
[143] Recently, one of my friends was working there, and instead of the usual groups of young women and cocktail dresses, the bar was filled with big, burly, middle -aged men.
[144] But hey, no judgment.
[145] Scary looking men are allowed to enjoy some sweet, sweet teaky drinks, am I right?
[146] That's hell, yeah, you're right.
[147] That's Now everyone has to go watch the kids in the hall sketch girl drink drunk, which is one of the funniest day Foley plays a girl drink drunk where you can't stop drinking like big blue things with pineapple sticking.
[148] It's the best.
[149] Okay.
[150] Later in the night, one of the men was standing in the bar when cool, calm and collectively another man walked up to him and stuck a knife in his throat.
[151] No scuffle, no provocation, just a straight up stabbing.
[152] The man who had been stabbed took a sip from his drink, pulled the knife out of his.
[153] own throat.
[154] This is so Australian and walked out into the street where he died in view of nearly every single person in Camberra trying to have a fun night out during COVID.
[155] Needless to say, oh my God.
[156] So this just happened.
[157] Needless to say, all hell broke loose in the bar.
[158] Turns out, turns out all these big burly men in the tiki bar were in fact two branches of a large, well -known biker gang.
[159] This says bikey gang, but I feel like, let Australian, listeners, please let us know if you call biker gangs, bikey gangs.
[160] Or if they're in like a tricycle.
[161] What it's like they call tricycles, bikies?
[162] There are these big burly dudes in a tricycle gang.
[163] They're big burly fourth graders.
[164] The man who had very calmly cut the other man's throat was the hit man of the group.
[165] It's still a mystery as to why they went out drinking together just before a murder.
[166] So is why they chose to very publicly kill one of their members when usually they just quote unquote disappear.
[167] However, what we have found out is that tiki bars are a great way for gangs to launder money.
[168] Oh.
[169] Tiki bars specifically?
[170] I mean, those are expensive drinks.
[171] Yeah, that's true.
[172] You're like, how did you, how in God's name, do you spend $680 at the tiki bar?
[173] Oh, Tiki bar.
[174] Right.
[175] Yeah, all that pineapple.
[176] Thank you for all the quality entertainment over the years.
[177] As the only female bartender at my bar, the stories you've told have made me fiercely protective of my customers.
[178] Particularly young women.
[179] If you ever see a Canberra bartender wearing an MFM logo pin, please know that you are in safe hands and I might even buy you a drink.
[180] Cheers, Alyssa.
[181] Oh my God.
[182] Did that catch you?
[183] Yeah.
[184] That's so sweet.
[185] I got you in a good place.
[186] I know.
[187] It's very sweet.
[188] I love that idea.
[189] It's so good.
[190] And you know what?
[191] There's this podcast out right now about this woman whose father was in like Hell's Angels.
[192] Oh.
[193] And so I've been listening and like about a lot of bike or stuff.
[194] It's really good.
[195] Hold on.
[196] Let me find out.
[197] It's called bikey gang.
[198] Oh, no, it's called Relative Unknown.
[199] It's good.
[200] Okay.
[201] Okay.
[202] Um, that was great.
[203] You had two fucking hits so far.
[204] I mean, I wrote them.
[205] I'm just giving Alyssa and her friends credit.
[206] That was great.
[207] You ready for a pervert story?
[208] Huh.
[209] I mean, it's, I'm long overdue.
[210] Okay.
[211] This one's called the Kirkwood tickler.
[212] Oh, Jesus.
[213] I'm sorry to laugh.
[214] It's not.
[215] No, obviously.
[216] My reaction is this nervous.
[217] It's like, it's just so bizarre.
[218] These stories do not disappoint in the bizarreness of the fact that there are these errant one -off people that are just weirdo.
[219] They're criminals, but with a big serving a weirdo.
[220] Normally we don't, we don't kink shame unless you're a sexual assaulter.
[221] Yes.
[222] Yes.
[223] It has to be consensuality is the key to kink.
[224] You can't be a tickler, a one -sided tickler.
[225] It has to be consensual Swiss cheese.
[226] Otherwise, which does not exist.
[227] I care to it.
[228] Okay.
[229] Sorry.
[230] Hi, y 'all.
[231] Oh, boy, do I have a hometown for you?
[232] I grew up in a town outside of Boston and come from a big family of mass holes.
[233] My older sister attended Boston College, the fighting Eagles, with their Jesuit agenda.
[234] And during her junior year, she decided to live off campus with some of her friends in an old house on Kirkwood Road.
[235] From 2011 to 2013, there had been several reported break -ins in the neighborhood, including many residential homes around BC's campus.
[236] Nothing was stolen.
[237] There were practically no traces left in any of the homes.
[238] However, in a few cases, it was reported at a dark figure was seen watching over men as they slept.
[239] Oh.
[240] In 2014, these break -ins escalated with up to five occurring in a night.
[241] With many BC students taking up residence on Kirkwood and the surrounding area, doors were frequently left unlocked.
[242] One night, many of the men living on Kirkwood, including some of my sister's neighbors and friends, reported similar break -ins but with a twist.
[243] The shadowy figure instead stood over these men and in some cases tickled their feet.
[244] No. The criminal was then coined the Kirkwood tickler, and continue to strike across campus targeting the feet of young men.
[245] After my sister graduated, there were no other reported run -ins with the tickler.
[246] However, the hysteria of tickler culture shook my sister and the students living on Kirkwood.
[247] The tickler was never caught.
[248] Some say the ghost of the tickler still haunts the area.
[249] And some students report supernatural or not sightings of the tickler out of their bedroom window.
[250] Supernatural.
[251] It's actually a dude.
[252] It couldn't be more real.
[253] It could be more human.
[254] Stay sexy and lock your doors, Julia.
[255] Oh, my, for real.
[256] So that's, that is like the sister purve to remember the petaluma tickler that my friend Audrey Crandall wrote in that's, it's same exact thing, but young girls.
[257] Yeah.
[258] If you haven't seen the 2016 documentary tickled.
[259] Oh, yeah.
[260] Relates to this directly.
[261] I highly, and I mean, I recommend it.
[262] it's a mind -blowing documentary because it starts one spot and friends of the fam Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds are featured because they did this story on the dollup which is it great it's a bizarre history podcast if you've never listened to it it's very funny those guys are great and it's you know and then the stories are real so Dave finds the most insane historical stories and then just kind of walks you through them but they are actually in this documentary because they covered this story and this and this reporter who is either I think he was from New Zealand he went and started investigating it and unraveled a thing that was so much bigger than the original point of the story it's the I swear to you April Richardson and I went and watched this documentary and when it was over it was at the member of the Sundance movie theater in the on Crescent Heights the sunset five no yes yes yes yeah yeah But it, but then it later became, yeah.
[263] So there was, I would say all together, there was like nine people in the theater to watch this documentary.
[264] And when it was over, we all turned to each other.
[265] Like, the whole audience turned to each other and went, what the fuck?
[266] Like, we all started talking to each other because it was that mind -blowing and that, like, yeah.
[267] So if you haven't seen Tickled, it's from 2016, highly recommend that documentary.
[268] Oh, it's so good.
[269] It's so funny.
[270] We did this last night, too, constantly making a. list of things people watched and said they liked because we're always looking for stuff to watch and media to consume.
[271] So bored.
[272] We've watched everything.
[273] Watched it all.
[274] Watched it all.
[275] Okay.
[276] Well, that's a new one.
[277] Have you seen that documentary?
[278] Did you watch it?
[279] Years ago, I completely forgot about it.
[280] Yeah.
[281] Karen, you know I'm all about vintage shopping.
[282] Absolutely.
[283] And when you say vintage, you mean when you physically drive to a store and actually purchase something with cash.
[284] Exactly.

[301] Okay.
[302] This last one is the subject line is postal workers.
[303] because I think we called out for if you're a postal worker, tell us weird stuff.
[304] Yeah.
[305] Hey, I'm FM crew.
[306] I'm a postal worker and I thought I'd share a couple of stories from the processing side.
[307] Okay.
[308] First of all, we are the biggest shipper of drugs in the country.
[309] You're welcome.
[310] We all know those coffee beans and packages are hiding weed.
[311] Props to the ones that straight up send weed without any concealed scent.
[312] You've got some balls.
[313] My God.
[314] Oh, my.
[315] People just putting weed in a box and putting some.
[316] tape on it and giving it to the mailman.
[317] While I was a clerk, one of the funniest parts of my 12 -hour day, six days a week, was when jail mail came through.
[318] Ladies, whoever is taking those picks of you is a good friend, and we've seen parts of you not meant for public viewing.
[319] Remember not to overstuff the envelope.
[320] It gets caught in the machines, and your bits and pieces are out there for the whole post office to see.
[321] Oh, no. So people sending?
[322] Sending in, it's like, hey, you know, you need, this is what you need.
[323] when you're inside, but then if the envelope's too thick.
[324] There's too many photos in there.
[325] There's just too many angles.
[326] Pick three are your favorite.
[327] Yeah.
[328] One of the worst things to happen was when someone sent a fecal sample in an envelope and jammed in my machine.
[329] Someone's shit was everywhere and I vomited in the trash can.
[330] What the fuck?
[331] Oh my God.
[332] Listen, if you're mailing in your ballot this election mail early, don't take chances.
[333] Your new voting date is October 20th, not November 3rd.
[334] make sure your vote gets counted we have an election we have election coordinators in every district in the country we're working diligently to make sure ballots and election mail get clear every day go buy some sweet stamps or merch and clean off your porch steps sidewalk for your carrier i never thought about that's right there's mail carriers who have to run gauntlets of people's garbage and bullshit to get to deliver mail i never thought about that stay sexy and don't forget to seal that envelope of naughty picks be be amazing i love that's exactly what we wanted i love it good inside information so good love the voting info as well yes thank you so much for that that's hilarious yeah um okay my last one is hero cat saves the dog uh so up y 'all a long time ago you asked for hero cat stories and i finally worked up the ambition to actually send this in My in -laws moved to a Rocky Mountains' foothill neighborhood outside of Albuquerque just over 10 years ago.
[335] The house came with a cat flap, which they assumed was for a cat the previous owners had had.
[336] Nope.
[337] Turns out the flap was installed specifically for the common cat that nobody owned but everyone took care of.
[338] He had toys, beds, food bowls, and a different name in every house in the neighborhood.
[339] I love those cats, neighborhood cats.
[340] Tabby, right?
[341] It's got to be, right?
[342] must be my in -laws called him meowie because he liked to talk a lot said meowie without the e so maui he liked to talk a lot it took it took him all of one day to come in and climb all over my highly allergic father -in -law who quickly became his favorite person my in -laws took him to the vet and tried to make him an indoor cat but he was having absolutely none of it instead maui came and went as he pleased spending most of each week with my in -laws made friends with their dog brady and went for family walks in the foothills every single day, meowing the whole time.
[343] I love cats so much.
[344] And as he was meowing, what he was saying is, I love this.
[345] It's so great to get outside.
[346] You guys are fun.
[347] There's two other families that never leave the house.
[348] You guys get the good cat food.
[349] That's why I like you the best.
[350] I'm hanging out here.
[351] One day on their regular walk, Maui did something he had never, ever done before.
[352] He started growling.
[353] He crouched down with his hackles fully raised, staring intently.
[354] at a bush about 10 feet away and made this terrifying, low growling hissing noise.
[355] Now, this is an off -leash area and Brady was wandering close to that bush.
[356] The way Maui was acting totally freaked my mother -in -law out and she called the dog back.
[357] The second the leash clicked on Brady's collar, Maui made the most blood -curdling, yowling noise and charged at the bush, where A, and this is all caps, fully grown bobcat had been hiding.
[358] Whoa!
[359] Maui, a nine -pound semi -stray house cat, chased this 30 -plus -pound bobcat over 100 feet, then came prancing back like the little king that he was.
[360] Save the dog because he would have gotten the dog because he wasn't.
[361] Yeah, it would.
[362] Maui lived for another five years or show after this, getting spoiled with cans of wet food.
[363] The older he got, the more he stayed with my in -laws until he was basically an indoor cat at their place.
[364] He passed away peacefully in my father -in -law's favorite chair, which they still.
[365] call the Maui chair.
[366] Stay sexy and invite the neighborhood cat in for some wet food.
[367] It might just save your dog, Rosie.
[368] Yes.
[369] That is the cute.
[370] I know.
[371] Could we please have pictures of Maui?
[372] Can we please see him?
[373] What if they send us a picture and it's a bobcat?
[374] We're like, oh.
[375] Guys, guys, those were they were relatives.
[376] They were having a family quarrel.
[377] There was no. Now, that's the best.
[378] Also, I love those kind of cats that follow you when you walk and don't like flip out and don't go other places or whatever like that's that weird um i because cats aren't pack animals so when they do stuff like that it's like because they like you it's because they're legit like you and they know that your dipshit it'll walk right by a bobcat bush as if that's your right and privilege when it's not uh watch watch our back from bobcats what a good patch this week what a good bat the word is batch Patches of batches.
[379] Real good ones.
[380] What's the word you guys said last night?
[381] You're a niece and I. What was it?
[382] Stranglers.
[383] She was trying to say stragglers.
[384] So she goes stranglers and I go, no, I think you mean, what did I say?
[385] Oh, no, it is stranglers.
[386] And then I was watching you guys talk about it.
[387] And then I finally waited for you to be done.
[388] I was like, it's stragglers.
[389] Me and this 13 year old and I'm telling her.
