The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz XX
[0] You're listening to Draft King's Network.
[1] Now's a good time to remember where the story of tequila started.
[2] In 1795, the first tequila distillery was opened by the Cuervo family.
[3] And 229 years later, Cuervo is still going strong.
[4] Family owned from the start, same family, same land.
[5] Now's a good time to enjoy Cuervo.
[6] The tequila that invented tequila.
[7] Go to Quervo .com to shop tequila or visit a store near you.
[8] Quervo, now's a good time.
[9] owned by Beckley, SAB, the CV.
[10] Copyright 24.
[11] Proximo.
[12] Jersey City, New Jersey.
[13] Please drink responsibly.
[14] This is The Hockey Show.
[15] My name is Roy Bellamy, and that's David Jorke of the Hockey News.
[16] We are going to get into a list that I have an app here of...
[17] Very important looking list.
[18] Yeah, explain this list here, Dave.
[19] Today we're going to be ranking fictional hockey players.
[20] Last week, we ranked hockey movies.
[21] Today we're going in a little bit deeper.
[22] We're going to talk about fictional hockey players from movies and from TV shows.
[23] Roy and I put a decent amount of thought into this list, I think.
[24] You know, we take our hockey and our fiction fairly seriously.
[25] Yeah, yeah, definitely.
[26] We definitely take our fake stuff very seriously.
[27] Well, first we're going to talk about something that's nonfiction.
[28] Yeah.
[29] Actually happened.
[30] News happened in the hockey media world that happened this week.
[31] Jeff Merrick, who is actually pretty much beloved in Canada.
[32] I mean, he started all the way into the bottom of radio, just like we did.
[33] Yeah.
[34] You know, he's been part of hockey media for 30 years.
[35] In the last 13 years, he has been a part of Sportsnet.
[36] He's been a feature voice on SportsNet, and something happened at the NHL draft.
[37] You know how these things go with these draft coverages.
[38] You know, the production truck, they get their information about who got drafted earlier than the audience does before the actual announcement.
[39] Yeah, they get like a minute, two minutes.
[40] Not much time, but they get a little bit of time to get their shit together, to get their videos prepared, their graphics ready.
[41] You know, that's kind of the benefit of being a rightsholder.
[42] But it's also the responsibility of being a rights holder, which happened to Jeff Merrick, who, you know, all the talent, they get the information beforehand as well.
[43] And apparently, Jeff Merrick was tipping these picks to a guy by the name of, I believe it's Mark Seidel.
[44] Correct.
[45] He actually owns his own scouting service.
[46] So when you got that information from Jeff Merrick, he brought that to Twitter.
[47] and pretty much said he predicted this to happen.
[48] I mean, allegedly, this is all kind of, you know, there's a really good article that the Athletic put out that kind of broke everything down.
[49] None of this has been independently confirmed from the league, from Merrick, from Seidel.
[50] So, you know, this is all still like, you have to think, like, when the athletic's going to put out a story, you know, I think, what was it, Katie String was on it.
[51] Oh, especially from Katie String, like, that's somebody to retrust.
[52] So, yeah, I mean, they're not going to put this information out if they're not pretty sure on their sources and on their information.
[53] But, yeah, it's, I wasn't sure how to deal with this, actually, because this kind of crosses a few different lines.
[54] Like the Venn diagram on this is a little convoluted, which, you know, is how they're going to be.
[55] But I don't know, like, this information gets out.
[56] And that's a big part of the industry is, you know, finding out privileged information, you know, journalists trying to source it responsibly.
[57] It seems like, and again, I don't want to say for sure, You know, we live in that kind of a specific world.
[58] But if it is the way that it was, you know, kind of brought up to us in this article.
[59] I don't know, man. Like, I think if you're going to be, because I feel there's an important element to disseminating certain information.
[60] Obviously, nothing that's going to get anybody in trouble.
[61] But in terms of, you know, providing that kind of a service as a journalist, there's a certain line that you have to be very careful not to cross.
[62] And I feel like in this case, and it's not like a dangerous line, but it's like, okay, look what happens.
[63] in here.
[64] He's trying, you know, on the very, very, very light end of it, trying to do his buddy service, trying to help his career.
[65] Like, I get that, you know, fine.
[66] You pay it for it.
[67] Where do you help your friends?
[68] Paying it forward is something that Merrick's done his whole career.
[69] Yeah, but in this situation, there are two problems with this.
[70] This is an HR issue.
[71] You're sharing proprietary information as an insider to somebody outside of the company.
[72] That's something that if you work in a media company, they show you HR videos about this.
[73] Yep.
[74] Like, intellectual property and all that stuff, they show you videos about this, and if you violate that, they will fire you.
[75] The other thing about this is this is a Vegas situation.
[76] This is like sports books are attached to this where people can actually put bets on who goes where in the NHL drafts and the NHL has deals with gambling companies.
[77] So that's not going to be a good look for SportsNet as a whole who has to deal with the league itself as a rights holder.
[78] So those are the two situations that pretty much led to Jeff Merrick's dismissal.
[79] Never seen anything like this.
[80] That's, I think, the other interesting part.
[81] I don't know about that.
[82] Like Adam Schaefter, AJ and Woznorowski, they go to Twitter, they tell everybody before the pick has happened, like seconds before, because this is happening in live, right?
[83] But if they're getting the information themselves, or we don't know where they're getting that information.
[84] Like, we don't know if they're plugged into, you know, the league itself.
[85] They just have a source with every, you know, I'm sure that they're both, you know, Woj and Schefter are the guys.
[86] But I think that's kind of the difference in this case, is in this case, they pulled back the curtain a little bit, allegedly, to see, because it's not like it was Merrick that was putting out the information himself.
[87] He was feeding it to someone else, allegedly.
[88] I just want to keep throwing that out there.
[89] Allegedly.
[90] I'm not accusing anybody of anything.
[91] We're just talking about what this story says, but it's a little bit different, I think.
[92] Yeah.
[93] And with the point that you made, which is, I think.
[94] I think why everybody's on edge about this is the financial, the gambling.
[95] That's a bigger element in sports right now than it's ever been, and it's only going to get bigger.
[96] Yeah.
[97] So that's something that they really need to be watching social media during the draft.
[98] They're like they know what's going on.
[99] Man, I don't know, man. The whole thing just kind of makes me a little uneasy.
[100] Yeah, this is a slippery slope here, man, because you're messing with people's money.
[101] Yeah.
[102] You mess with people's money.
[103] Well, in uncharted areas.
[104] There's no, like, guidebook yet for this.
[105] No. We're writing it right now.
[106] Yeah.
[107] So that's where we are with Jeff Merrick.
[108] I think that he's going to land on his feet somewhere because.
[109] Oh, he's got to.
[110] And, like, if he doesn't do it in Canada with TSN or anywhere else.
[111] Could use some good hockey people down here in the States, I think, you know.
[112] You never have enough.
[113] Yeah.
[114] Yeah, he can go to Turner ESPN.
[115] Yeah.
[116] Call it a day on that one.
[117] So good luck to Jeff.
[118] I think he'll land somewhere.
[119] So we're going to move on to.
[120] to our list.
[121] All right.
[122] Fictional hockey players, first thing I'll do is I'll give you the list that Roy and I considered.
[123] Obviously, we may have left some people off.
[124] If we did, feel free to remind us kindly, politely, as you tend to do on social media, right, Roy?
[125] Very, very polite, everybody on social media.
[126] I thank you for all the kind words.
[127] Yeah, and, like, thank, thank you.
[128] You really make my life a real joy on Twitter.
[129] or what would the hell they call it now whatever anyway off to the list steve that was that was touching all right so here's the list dean youngblood and derrick sutton from youngblood regge donglap and ned barden yep that's from slapshed when i'm saying ned baron ned brayne from the mighty ducks we got a few we got charlie conway we got adam banks we got julie the cat gaffney we got gunner stall from team iceland yeah and we got gordon Bombay as a player.

[131] We got Ross Ray from Gune.
[132] Stevie Wheat's and Connor Banks from Mystery Alaska.
[133] We got Agent Michael Scarn from the office because, look, he did make an NHL All -Star game, so some credit there.
[134] Crying out loud.
[135] We got Jean -Jocque, Francois, Jack John, or J .J. Frankie, JJ, from Shorzie, from Shorzy.
[136] And also, Shorzie, from Shoresy.
[137] We have Bart and Lisa Simpson from the Simpsons.
[138] We've got Darren Roanoke from the Love Guru.
[139] He was amazing for the Maple Leafs.
[140] Auto Rocket from Rocket Power Enough said Derek Thompson from the tooth fairy And finally my personal ad to this list Was Doug Dorsey from the cutting edge Because the dude was the captain of Team USA Before he went to a figure skating career So that's 21 Players on our list So now Roy and I are going to give our top fives Okay All right, so since you gave the list No first off the list this time No OLLI for me either All right Number five is Ross Ross Ray.
[141] Ross Ray.
[142] That was supposed to be fanfare.
[143] Yeah, what happened to the fanfare?
[144] The pot is not on.
[145] The pot is off.
[146] Rose?
[147] Rose, can you turn on Dan FX, please, on the board so I can hit this button.
[148] There we go.
[149] Ross Ray is number five for me. Dave.
[150] All right.
[151] I'm going with the goon.
[152] Yep.
[153] Going with the goon character but also the goon player.
[154] So, all right, fine.
[155] My number five is.
[156] also from Goon.
[157] It's Xavier LaFlemm.
[158] Dude set the world on fire.
[159] He was an amazing player.
[160] A little, you know, he had to get his shit together upstairs, but hockey still wise yeah, yeah, very good.
[161] Danny Benitez in our video booth said to me and my ear, the Bash Brothers, that would be from Mighty Ducks 2.
[162] They are not on my list.
[163] So no. Sorry, Danny.
[164] Number four is Lisa Simpson.
[165] Rose in my ear just screamed Justin Bieber, no. A, not fictional.
[166] B, no. No. No. God, no. No offense to the B. No, a little offense to the Bebes.
[167] Oh, take offense.
[168] Great singer.
[169] Take offense.
[170] I'm not on this list.
[171] That's true.
[172] I'm certainly not on this list because I can't skate.
[173] No, we're going to fix that.
[174] Yeah, we're going to fix that soon.
[175] Dave.
[176] All right.
[177] My number four is from Shorzy.
[178] It's J .J. Frankie, JJ.
[179] This guy can score on demand.
[180] He looks like.
[181] Heavy set.
[182] Yeah, well, that's the thing.
[183] He doesn't look like much, but you put the dude in the ice, and he's magic.
[184] So give me JJ.
[185] Yeah.
[186] I'm not going to spoil things for season three, because I don't think you got.
[187] I have not gotten to season three yet, so.
[188] Yeah, he's in a bit of a slump.
[189] Yeah, so.
[190] Still, good players can slump.
[191] Yeah, good players can slump.
[192] Number three for me is Shorzie.
[193] All right.
[194] I mean, look, he's a glue guy.
[195] He's a captain.
[196] All right.
[197] You're definitely going with the Thumper team here.
[198] Oh, yeah.
[199] I'm going with the All -Star team.
[200] Yeah.
[201] Roy's building his perfect team.
[202] I'm building an all -star team.
[203] We still don't know his first name.
[204] No, we don't.
[205] We got to find that out.
[206] What does this family call him?
[207] Sure.
[208] No, no, they call him like waffles.
[209] Oh, they gave him waffles.
[210] Yeah, they gave him a nickname.
[211] Waffles.
[212] Yeah, it's definitely not his first name.
[213] My number three is from the Mighty Ducks.
[214] It's Adam Banks.
[215] I feel like Adam Banks, he's like the best player on the team in every movie, yet he's not the main character on the team in any movie.
[216] But he always puts up numbers.
[217] He always.
[218] always performs.
[219] So give me Adam Banks, number three.
[220] All right.
[221] Number two for me is one, Douglas Glatt.
[222] Man, I do not want to face your team in a dark alley.
[223] Oh, yeah, man. I got, yeah.
[224] We got the thumpers going, man. We got the fist flying in Doug Glad.
[225] Very lovable.
[226] You've got, like, a team full of character guys.
[227] Bill Zito would love your team.
[228] Oh, yeah, absolutely.
[229] Good guys.
[230] I got a goaltender, so yeah, yeah, good.
[231] All right, number two on my list is another Banks.
[232] It's Connor Banks from Mystery Alaska.
[233] Did you see how accurate this guy And he's fast because they can all fly because they all learned how to walk on states or state on feet or, you know.
[234] They came out of room with skates on, which is very dangerous.
[235] But Connor Banks got a contract.
[236] He got a two -way contract with the Rangers based off of one game of pond hockey.
[237] Yeah.
[238] So there you go.
[239] My number one is Reggie Dunlop.
[240] Slip shots.
[241] Listen, you got to play a coach there, man. Yeah.
[242] So not only did I draft a player, a veteran player, I got a coach.
[243] leadership qualities there so I got a bunch of thumpers, a goaltender and a coach I don't know where that coach is in a lead us based off the track record but I do understand where you're coming from.
[244] He's going to give us inspiration even though the team is folding.
[245] Veteran presence.
[246] Yes.
[247] My number one and I don't think it's really debatable is Dean Youngblood.
[248] What he did with the Mustangs he was already super skilled and then he learned how to kick some ass.
[249] So give me Dean Youngblood.
[250] Rob Oh, Patrick Srazy, Keanu Reeves is a goalie.
[251] Keanu Reeves is a goalie.
[252] He's just like a great guy, right?
[253] It's like the thing with Keanu Reeves.
[254] Yeah.
[255] He's just a good dude.
[256] Oh, yeah, absolutely.
[257] I want to have a glass of scotch and talk some hockey with Keanu Reeves.
[258] Me too.
[259] Does he drink?
[260] Maybe.
[261] Rose sets definitely.
[262] All right.
[263] Well, that was good.
[264] Yeah, that was a good list.
[265] I think everybody would agree that all list is.
[266] is a decent somewhat.
[267] I mean, if we don't agree, then that's, you know, that's cool too.
[268] Just again, be polite about it.
[269] Yes, they probably won't.
[270] Okay, goodbye.
