[4] Hi, Adom, meet Conan and Sona.
[5] Hi.
[6] Hi, Adom.
[7] Hi, Conan.
[8] Hi, Sona.
[9] Hi, Matt.
[10] Adom, it's very nice to meet you.
[11] And where are you right now?
[12] Where are you calling us from?
[13] I'm calling from Adisaba of Ethiopia.
[14] Oh, the capital of Ethiopia.
[15] Yes.
[16] Wow, that's incredible.
[17] I've never been to Ethiopia.
[18] You should come.
[19] Have you, your English is, uh, seems perfect.
[20] Have you spent any time in the United States?
[21] Yes.
[22] I, I, I went to college in upseat New York.
[23] Oh, you're kidding.
[24] Where'd you go to college?
[25] I mean, I grew up here.
[26] I went to Hamilton College.
[27] Oh, okay.
[28] In Clinton, New York.
[29] Very good.
[30] Okay.
[31] And, and then you, so you grew up in, uh, in Ethiopia.
[32] You did some college in the United States.
[33] Uh, and then you move back.
[34] And what are you up to these days?
[35] I have a business with my friend.
[36] We make fragrances and scented candles and fun stuff like that.
[37] Wow.
[38] How did you learn to do this?
[39] I mean, don't you need to know a lot to make fragrances?
[40] Yes.
[41] I'm very smart.
[42] I'm sure you are, but I'm wondering, did you have to study anything in particular?
[43] Do you have to study chemistry or do you have to?
[44] Yeah, I studied biochemistry.
[45] So it helps a little bit.
[46] But I mean, I had to like, learn a lot of it on my own, too.
[47] I imagine.
[48] Yeah, it's a lot of trial and error where you try and make a scent and it can go terribly wrong, I bet, right?
[49] Oh, yeah.
[50] Well, some of the ingredients for perfumes, like, they don't really smell that good.
[51] So, yeah, if you use a lot of something, then, yeah, can be terrible.
[52] Let me ask you professional opinion, as you know in the United States and across the world, sometimes celebrities have their own scent that they market do you think I could have could there be a Conan scent a perfume just take it easy could there or should there listen I think we're rushing this a little bit first let's begin Adam do you think that I'm the kind of person who could have a scent out on the market I mean why not yeah no okay you could have scent maybe like pumpkin spice I love it.
[53] It doesn't matter where I talk to someone in the world.
[54] This is someone in Ethiopia who's dissing me and doing it very well.
[55] No, no, it's very funny.
[56] Everyone here around me loves you now because you treated me the way I should be treated.
[57] And yeah, pumpkin spice.
[58] I'm not sure that's going to be.
[59] I want something, you know.
[60] manly, you know?
[61] Sexy.
[62] Sexy.
[63] Something that the women are going to go.
[64] Do you remind me of Conan O 'Brien in that sexy way?
[65] Pumpkin vice.
[66] For naughty evenings, it's pumpkin vice.
[67] Wow.
[68] So you making sense, candles, do you make perfumes just do you make sense for men or is it all mostly for women?
[69] We make both.
[70] We make for men and for women.
[71] But I mean, we make a lot more for women than men.
[72] Is there a favorite way that men like to smell that you've noticed?
[73] Is there a certain fragrance that they gravitate towards?
[74] I think people in general like anything familiar.
[75] So like if they smell a scent and it reminds them of like another perfume they've liked or something, they usually gravitate towards that.
[76] I don't know if like people know so much about.
[77] I would like, because I believe I want my scent.
[78] to be something that's familiar to me. So that would be frying ham.
[79] Oh.
[80] I want to smell.
[81] That's sexy.
[82] Like frying ham.
[83] That's what I grew up smelling.
[84] And it's a very, it reminds me of a, of a fascinating time in my life.
[85] Hey, I got news for you, buddy.
[86] That's what you smell like.
[87] Hey, mission accomplished.
[88] It's very hard.
[89] It's basically just bacon grease.
[90] That's all it is.
[91] So, Adom, do you have a shop?
[92] Is this all done over the internet, these sales?
[93] How do you sell your products?
[94] We started online, but now we have a shop.
[95] Where is your shop?
[96] Is it in the capital?
[97] Yeah, yeah.
[98] It's pretty close to where I live.
[99] Okay.
[100] It's in a mall.
[101] Okay.
[102] So you go to every day, do you visit the shop every day in the mall?
[103] I try to, yeah.
[104] But it's a new mall.
[105] So, like, there's very little foot traffic right now.
[106] So we're hoping for like a good turnout.
[107] I'm sure.
[108] In the next coming months.
[109] I'm confident.
[110] Maybe I could get over to Ethiopia and do some kind of personal appearance.
[111] How would that go over, Adom, if you said Conan O 'Brien will be appearing at the mall in Addis, Ethiopia.
[112] Would there be much excitement or would there be no excitement?
[113] I think so.
[114] I mean, I think so.
[115] I know a few people know you here.
[116] A few people are known.
[117] I mean, it's going to be Beatle, it's going to be Beatlemania.
[118] You know, I'm worried about, I'm worried about just, based on that alone, I'm just worried about people's safety and security.
[119] I mean, people know how many like.
[120] Okay, again, you're getting way ahead of things here, Gorely.
[121] I mean, I just worry that with a few people, you could get as many of seven or eight people might show up.
[122] And then what if pushing and shoving starts?
[123] There's no way to control a crowd like that.
[124] Oh, yeah.
[125] I don't know.
[126] I don't know about, you know, like, what people are into these days.
[127] You know what?
[128] Clearly, neither do I. Neither do I. But who cares?
[129] I've got you.
[130] I've got you.
[131] And that's what's important.
[132] Yes, you do.
[133] But this is, this is very cool.
[134] So you do that.
[135] You manufacture, um, scented candles and, uh, and you sell these different perfumes.
[136] Have there other things that you do, you know, using your skills?
[137] I mean, now we're trying to, like, all our products are natural.
[138] So we're trying to move to, like, natural soaps and lip glosses and things like that.
[139] So around the same area, I guess.
[140] That's a big movement.
[141] Yes.
[142] People don't want to put anything artificial on their bodies.
[143] They want it all to be natural.
[144] I prefer anything artificial.
[145] Oh, no. Why is that exactly?
[146] I just trust in exotic chemicals.
[147] I've always been that way.
[148] They've never done us wrong.
[149] I don't think they have.
[150] I mean, I'd like to see more information on DDT and various pesticides that were banned in the 60s by some kooky hippies.
[151] I actually freshen up every morning with little DDT under each arm.
[152] Guess what?
[153] I've had no insects underneath my arms.
[154] We did it.
[155] Yeah, we did it.
[156] Before there was a lot.
[157] And you're also, you're writing.
[158] Aren't you writing something on, I'm told that you are writing something on the internet?
[159] What are you writing?
[160] I'm trying to, oh, so I write blogs.
[161] So I work for this other company that has like luxury homes across the U .S. So I write blogs for them, like recommending people on like places to go to when they're staying at the homes.
[162] Wait.
[163] And I haven't been to any of the places.
[164] Oh, wait a minute.
[165] Hey, Dome, you're saying, you're saying that you're sitting there in Ethiopia, and you are writing, you are telling people, oh, my God, you're going to love this house.
[166] It's a split -level modern, and it's in Park City, Utah, and oh, my God, the views, and I loved it here, and you've never been there.
[167] Yeah, I recommend them restaurants and, you know, pet -friendly activities.
[168] So, so, and basically, so you just Google.
[169] So you just Google.
[170] Google everything.
[171] That's incredible.
[172] That's awesome.
[173] Listen, I have to say, Adom, I really admire your, I mean, first of all, chicanery.
[174] I like your scamming.
[175] No, but I think it's actually, you've got so many things going at the same time, which is impressive.
[176] What else are you working on?
[177] It sounds like, I bet you you're a good writer.
[178] If you can write those blogs, do you use, do you try any other kinds of writing?
[179] Yeah, I try.
[180] I'm trying to write fiction.
[181] I think you already are in those blocks.
[182] Yeah.
[183] So far, you are one of the better fiction writer.
[184] You might be the most fiction, most prolific fiction writer I've ever met.
[185] Every day you describe luxurious places where you've had a blast and brought your pet dog, even though none of this is true.
[186] Absolute bullshit.
[187] Yeah.
[188] So what kind of, what kind of, if you are to write a novel, do you think it would, um, you'd spend a lot of time describing the homes where the character lived.
[189] And the smells.
[190] The smell, the smells, the beautiful homes and, uh, the places nearby that serve a vegan burger and are, and are rabbit friendly.
[191] And then you'd spend very little time on the characters, right?
[192] Yep.
[193] I mean, you've given me an inspiration.
[194] I think that's going to be like, yeah, it's going to help me write my next novel.
[195] That's great.
[196] Do you come back to the United States often or not?
[197] No, I haven't been back since I've been back, but I plan to go next year because my sister is going to graduate.
[198] And is she going to Hamilton as well?
[199] No, she finished her undergrad.
[200] She's doing urban planning at Rutgers.
[201] Wow.
[202] Very impressive.
[203] That's very cool.
[204] Did you enjoy your time?
[205] Did you have a good experience?
[206] going to college in the States?
[207] I did, yeah.
[208] I met a lot of great people from, like, all over the world.
[209] Yeah, made lifelong friends.
[210] So, yeah, I had a good time.
[211] Well, that's, I have a daughter in college.
[212] She's a freshman.
[213] And I told her, it's the people you meet and the friendships you make that are going to stick with you more than so much what you learn.
[214] Do you know what I mean?
[215] Yeah, absolutely.
[216] Yeah.
[217] Yeah, I can't even remember a lot of the classes I took.
[218] but I keep in touch with a lot of...
[219] Okay, you got to remember a little bit of it.
[220] I mean, it's important.
[221] I remember, yeah.
[222] I remember the basics, but...
[223] It's funny when you talk to a doctor, and he's like, I don't remember anything from medical school.
[224] I mean, it was in one ear out the other.
[225] Anyway, we're going to put you under now.
[226] And I'm an ear doctor.
[227] And I'm going to go through your eye and into your brain.
[228] And just wing it.
[229] So what's your day like?
[230] When you wake up in the morning, do you go, do you start working on sense right away?
[231] Or do you go to the mall right away?
[232] I'm just curious, a day in the life in, uh, no, I wish I would go right away.
[233] I just, I wake up.
[234] I go to the gym sometimes.
[235] I listen to you guys a lot.
[236] Um, well, I'm at the gym and I smile, like, laugh like an idiot.
[237] Isn't like running on the treadmill.
[238] That's the universal sign that someone's either in distress or listening to our podcast.
[239] and then yeah i go to the mall a few times um a week and then i work from home so i'm like you know at on my computer most of the day is you're a family and then i play with my dog a little bit are you dog friendly do you go oh yes i am good i'm looking you up on google right now and yes it says adome is dog friendly for sure what's your dog's name uh boochie Bucci.
[240] Does that mean anything or?
[241] Yeah, I mean small dog.
[242] I guess I had that coming.
[243] Your dog's name is small dog.
[244] Hey, small dog.
[245] Come here.
[246] That's fantastic.
[247] I got, yeah, when I was, like, I was supposed to, when I got him and I wanted to name him, I just like started overthinking about like what's the best fit for the dog.
[248] And then I was like, you know what?
[249] Let's just stick with the generic name.
[250] Is it possible you underthought it?
[251] I know, that's what I was going to say.
[252] No, no, no, no. But I was thinking the same, I was thinking the same thing, which is there's overthinking and then there's, I'm going to call my dog, dog.
[253] I want to call my next dog, bad dog.
[254] Hey, bad dog, come here, bad dog.
[255] And he'll just constantly think.
[256] And then when you does something right, you go, good dog, bad dog.
[257] Good dog, bad dog.
[258] And then he'll just, eventually just run away.
[259] I don't blame him.
[260] I don't blame him.
[261] I don't know to be renamed by someone else.
[262] Wow, okay.
[263] So, and, and, And family, do you have family that lives around you nearby?
[264] Yes.
[265] Yeah, I live with my mom.
[266] You live with your mom?
[267] So just me, yeah, me, my mom and my dog.
[268] Okay, that's her name, mom.
[269] Yeah, that's her first name is mom.
[270] Yeah, that's what I call her.
[271] Her first name is my and her last name is mom.
[272] My mom.
[273] And does she know what you're doing right now?
[274] Does she know that you're calling into our podcast or no?
[275] She does.
[276] Because what time is it there now?
[277] It's midnight.
[278] Midnight.
[279] Is she asleep right now?
[280] She is, yes.
[281] wake her up go wake her up say Conan's on the phone I got to Zoom with Conan and he's got Gourley and sooner with him too would she know what you were talking about Yeah exactly that's okay trust me Hey I'm feeling pretty good about you know the seven people that are going to create a stampede when I visit them all in Addis Ethiopia You're just going to run It's not going to...
[282] It's a stampede the other way.
[283] Okay, okay.
[284] All right, that's not nice.
[285] Do you have a question for Conan?
[286] I do, but I think he answered it.
[287] I was going to say, I was going to ask what he smells like.
[288] Oh.
[289] I don't know, you know, I mean, in serious, I joked about frying ham, but I don't know that I have.
[290] I mean, you could answer that sona because you'd spend a long time.
[291] I don't think I have an odor.
[292] You don't have an odor.
[293] Sometimes you smell like freshly applied sunscreen.
[294] There may be a reason for that.
[295] You know what, though?
[296] It's not a bad smell.
[297] You don't have a bad smell.
[298] You're a, you know.
[299] Nicest thing anyone said to me in a while.
[300] You know, you don't have a bad smell, Conan.
[301] I think I don't like putting on scents, but I do have to put on sunscreens because, you know, my people are from Ireland and I live down by the Mexican border.
[302] Nobody needs an explanation.
[303] Yeah, we understand.
[304] No, no, I think you really need to understand.
[305] A -dom, why I may be sun -sensitive.
[306] And I think you really do have to hear this.
[307] Because you only got a biochem degree from a great school.
[308] Yeah, I don't know.
[309] Yeah.
[310] And so sometimes I probably do smell like that.
[311] No, but also, I mean, what I'm trying to say is it's not unpleasant to be around you.
[312] You know what I mean?
[313] What about my behavior?
[314] That's different.
[315] That's different.
[316] Right.
[317] You're not unpleasant to be.
[318] around.
[319] Do you have any behavior perfumes you can recommend?
[320] Yeah, is there any perfume I would wear or scent that would make me behave myself a little more?
[321] Behave yourself, no. I mean, I don't know.
[322] Sandalwood might calm me. Oh, yeah.
[323] You know, something like that.
[324] I like cedar.
[325] I like I love cedar.
[326] Yeah, handsome sense.
[327] I like, there are certain sense like that like if I wish I smelled like an old cedar closet.
[328] Oh.
[329] You know, they had a little bit of sandalwood in there.
[330] and maybe some, just a touch of vanilla.
[331] Oh, interesting.
[332] Just a little hint of vanilla.
[333] Can you work on this for me?
[334] That's nice.
[335] Hey, Dom, I will, I will contract you to make my scent.
[336] And then we will market it.
[337] I'll do that.
[338] We will market it in the mall in Ethiopia, in the capital.
[339] And we will say, smell like Conan O 'Brien.
[340] And then just watch the people come running.
[341] Watch the people come running.
[342] Would you do one of those sexy, You bet I would.
[343] Ads and stuff that are in like black and white.
[344] And what's the name?
[345] Yeah, Adom, you could direct it.
[346] You could direct a video with me where it's black and white and a dove is released.
[347] And then I turn to camera and say, well, we can't use Coco because that's been used.
[348] What's the name of it?
[349] It's not just co. Yeah, Coco is a pretty famous one.
[350] How about old cedar closet?
[351] Cobb.
[352] Old cedar.
[353] Cobb?
[354] How about cedar cobb?
[355] Cedar Cobb.
[356] Cedar Cobb.
[357] No. Just, no. I'm sorry.
[358] Okay, I'm not budding in.
[359] This is your, your smell.
[360] No, we got to figure out what my sense name is.
[361] No, it's not calm.
[362] Desperation.
[363] Oh, let's go with pumpkin spice.
[364] I like that.
[365] Need, need.
[366] Yeah, need.
[367] Need by Conan O 'Brien.
[368] Need by Conan O 'Brien.
[369] Oh, God.
[370] People around you should smell need.
[371] It's need.
[372] And then doves are released.
[373] Are there some good areas around, at us that we could shoot this, you know?
[374] Yeah, a lot of areas, yeah.
[375] Okay, all right, well.
[376] Yeah, it's a lot of, like, there are a lot of mountains you can visit.
[377] I love this.
[378] You run through the mountains.
[379] Yeah.
[380] And I think, release the doves.
[381] Yeah.
[382] All right, you're going to have to make the scent and then we're going to try and sell it.
[383] Easy.
[384] And, um, let's do it.
[385] I'll have, I'll get my best people on this, which means, um, well, I don't, I just have people.
