[1] It's Wednesday, November 9th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
[2] In a follow -up to this morning's episode, projected winners have still not been called in key Senate races in Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada, as control of the U .S. Senate hangs in the balance.
[3] In Georgia, Senator Raphael Warnock will officially head to a runoff on December 6 against GOP challenger, Herschel Walker.
[4] In Arizona, GOP candidate, Blake Masters, has not.
[5] not been counted out yet in his race against Democratic candidate Mark Kelly.
[6] In Nevada, incumbent Senator Democrat Catherine Cortez Mastow is trailing GOP candidate Adam Lacksalt.
[7] But the New York Times reported that election officials in Nevada say they have been flooded by thousands of mail -in ballots and that it may take several days to count the votes and upload the results.
[8] Meanwhile, Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson has claimed victory in his close election against Democrat challenger Mandela Barnes.
[9] As for the governor's races, in Arizona, Democrat Katie Hobbs and Republican Kerry Lake remain in a tight contest as counting continues.
[10] Both candidates had about 50 percent of the vote with 70 percent of the vote counted.
[11] Final results are expected by the end of the week.
[12] In Nevada, Republican candidate for Governor Joe Lombardo was ahead of Democrat Steve Cicillac by about five points as of midday Wednesday.
[13] In a major upset, the Democratic Congressional Caucus Chair Sean Patrick Maloney of New York lost his race to GOP challenger Michael Lawler in New York's 17th congressional district.
[14] In Pennsylvania, the Keystone State's longest -serving state representative, who died last month, was re -elected during the midterms.
[15] At age 85, Democrat Anthony Tony DeLuca passed away October 9th after succumbing to a third battle with lymphoma.
[16] And in other tragic news, Mayor Velma D. Hendricks of Melville Town, Louisiana, was up for re -election this year, but was killed as a result of a car crash on Election Day before polls closed Tuesday.
[17] Hendricks was 84 years old.
[18] And in some non -election news, evacuations have been announced in South Florida ahead of Tropical Storm Nicole.
[19] The storm grew stronger Tuesday night with sustaining winds at 70 miles per hour.
[20] It is expected to make landfall as a category one hurricane with winds of 75 miles per hour off the east coast of Florida Wednesday night.
[21] And WNBA star Brittany Griner has been transferred to a Russian penal colony after being sentenced to nine years in prison for allegedly possessing cannabis oil.
[22] According to her legal team, Griner was moved from a detention center on November 4th, but they do not know where the facility she will be transferred to is located.
