[1] It's Monday, January 2nd, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
[2] A Ukrainian strike on a facility in the Eastern Denedzstanetsk region where Russian military personnel were stationed has reportedly caused mass casualties.
[3] The Russian Defense Ministry reported 63 casualties, whereas Ukrainian media is reporting 400 Russian casualties with 300 injuries.
[4] Actor Jeremy Renner is being treated.
[5] for serious injuries that occurred while he was plowing snow on Sunday at his home in Reno, Nevada.
[6] A representative said that the 51 -year -old actor is in critical but stable condition.
[7] According to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, Renner was the only person involved and was airlifted to a hospital.
[8] Renner is known for his role as Hawkeye, the sharpshooting member of the superhero Avengers Squad in Marvel's sprawling movie and television universe.
[9] Approximately 300 migrants landed on uninhabited islands in the Florida Keys over the weekend.
[10] The group made at least 10 separate landings.
[11] According to Customs and Border Protection, at least 88 of the migrants, are Cuban nationals.
[12] At least 51 have died and 19 remain missing in the Philippines after catastrophic flooding over the Christmas holiday.
[13] At least 4 ,000 homes were damaged and some areas are still without power and water.
[14] A second major earthquake in less than two weeks jolted Northern California on New Year's Day.
[15] The 5 .4 magnitude quake struck at 1035 a .m. on Sunday with an epicenter about nine miles east of Rio Delle in Humboldt County.
[16] That's according to the U .S. Geological Survey.
[17] No deaths or injuries have been reported.
[18] President Biden's first big trip of the year is set to feature the president appearing alongside Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in Kentucky.
[19] The event is scheduled to take place Wednesday and is expected to center around the $1 .2 trillion infrastructure bill that Biden signed into law last year.
[20] Things are going to turn around in a big way.
[21] Because of this law, next year will be the first year in 20 years.
[22] American infrastructure investment will grow faster than China's.
[23] We'll once again have the best roads, bridges, ports, and airports over the next decade.
[24] A law signed in September making California a transgender sanctuary state, took effect on Sunday.
[25] The law gives kids from other states access to, quote, gender -affirming care in the Golden State.
[26] The legislation also states it will block the enforcement of other states' laws that hinder access to transgender medical procedures and drugs.
[27] Republican State Senator Melissa Melendez said while she thinks transgender youth deserve protection and mental health care, she said the law takes the wrong approach.
[28] I don't think the state of California should be stepping in and facilitating that.
[29] That's not our place.
[30] At least 14 people have died and more than a dozen others were injured on Sunday during an armed attack on a state prison in the Mexico border city of Juarez.
[31] Attackers reportedly converged on the Saraso state prison in armed vehicles around 7 a .m. and opened fire on guards, killing 10 guards and three inmates.
[32] At least 24 prisoners escaped before authorities regained control of the prison.
