Morning Wire XX
[0] Former President Donald Trump continues to hold an edge over his newly minted presidential opponent, just ahead of dueling rallies in Georgia.
[1] I'm Daily Wire, editor -in -chief John Bickley with Georgia Howl.
[2] It's Wednesday, July 31st, and this is Morning Wire.
[3] Kamala Harris tries to pivot from her positions on immigration, fracking, and other unpopular policies as Trump unleashes a new ad.
[4] Kamala Harris failed, weak, dangerous.
[5] and a seemingly coordinated attack on J .D. Vance by Democrats and legacy media.
[6] Super weird idea from J .D. Vance.
[7] Yeah, it's not.
[8] I mean, it's quite weird.
[9] They're just plain weird.
[10] Just plain weird.
[11] Just plain weird.
[12] Will voters buy it?
[13] And how is team Trump responding?
[14] Thanks for waking up with Morning Wire.
[15] Stay tuned.
[16] We have the news you need to know.

[24] With three months to go until election day, both parties are in a best of battle against time to define the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris.
[25] Here to discuss those efforts and how voters are responding so far as Daily Wire Senior Editor Cabot Phillips.
[26] Hey, Kavitt, so a historically fluid race now coming more into focus and coming down to the wire, really.
[27] What's the latest here?
[28] Yeah, we are now 97 days away from Election Day and just a month away from the first mail -in ballots being sent out one month.
[29] Wow.
[30] So the home stretch is on.
[31] And with a new candidate top their ticket, Democrats have.
[32] this air of confidence that simply was not there earlier in the summer.
[33] You can get a sense of that shift by looking at which states they're campaigning it.
[34] For example, a month ago, Democrats had all but written off the state of Georgia, but now the Harris campaign believes it is back in play.
[35] At that point, the VP held a large rally in Atlanta last evening with an appearance from rap star Megan the Stallion.
[36] Not to be outdone, Donald Trump announced just ahead of the event that he would be holding his own rally there in Atlanta on Saturday at the exact same venue.
[37] We're also seeing dueling campaign messages begin to hit the airwaves.
[38] Remember, the Trump team spent almost no real money on the airwaves last two months, opting to save up for the final sprint, and now they are finally tapping into that quarter billion dollar war chest.
[39] This week, they launched a $10 million blitz in six battleground states going after the VP for her role in the border crisis.
[40] Amanda will place some of that ad later on.
[41] For their part, the Harris campaign launched a $50 million ad buy of their own, promoting the VP's role as a prosecutor, going after her criminals, big banks, and ultimately her political rival, Trump.
[42] Donald Trump wants to take our country backward to give tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations and end the Affordable Care Act.
[43] But we are not going back.
[44] All right.
[45] So to the big question, who seems to have the lead as things currently stand?
[46] Well, polling still shows a very tight race with Donald Trump seemingly holding a slim lead.
[47] But there are reasons for optimism on both sides.
[48] We'll start with the Democrats.
[49] First, there is no doubt that Kamala Harris has invigorated their base.
[50] Back in February, just 62 % of Democrats said they were enthusiastic about voting for Joe Biden.
[51] Today, 88 % say they're enthusiastic to vote for Harris.
[52] That number exceeds even Donald Trump, who is at 82 % among Republicans on the same question.
[53] Harris has also seen a significant shift in her favorability ratings.
[54] A month ago, she was 15 to 20 points underwater, with a rating in the mid -to -high 30s.
[55] The latest Harvard Harris polling has her at 47%.
[56] And then there is fundraising.
[57] The Harris camp brought in a staggering $200 million in their first week.
[58] That is a historic hall.
[59] And finally, the VP has really dominated the national media discussion in a way that we haven't seen on the left since the Obama days.
[60] And that is likely to continue in coming weeks as she prepares to announce her VP next week and then accepts the nomination at the DNC in mid -August.
[61] So a lot of momentum for her, at least for now.
[62] And what about for Republicans?
[63] Yeah, there are still plenty of reasons for the Trump team to be optimistic.
[64] Remember, the Trump team warned Harris would see a honeymoon phase early on.
[65] They actually predicted she would take the lead.
[66] And that still might happen, but it has not happened yet.
[67] The day Joe Biden dropped out, Trump was ahead nationally over Harris by three points.
[68] Today, he's ahead by two points.
[69] And there still is not a single battleground state where Harris leads.
[70] Another reason for optimism on the right is that Harris really has not been tested since becoming the nominee.
[71] She has yet to debate, yet to hold a press conference, or even sit down for an extended interview.
[72] Republicans say there's a reason that she did not make it to Iowa in the 2020 primary, and that voters will soon be reminded once more of why she fared so poorly.
[73] And finally, Trump has the advantage of actually having been president before.
[74] He can ask that all -important question, are you better off now than you were four years ago?
[75] And poll after poll shows the majority of voters say no. Yeah, a powerful counter to the Democrats' messaging, no doubt.
[76] Cabot, thanks so much for reporting.
[77] Anytime.

[84] Vice President Kamala Harris is under mounting pressure over her handling of the border crisis and her shifting positions on other top line issues.
[85] Here to discuss is Daily Wire reporter Amanda Prestizakamo.
[86] Hey Amanda.
[87] So the mainstream media have notably worked pretty hard recently to give kind of cover to Harris on the border.
[88] They've even reversed course on their own reporting about her position as border but we're seeing now the issue is clearly not going away.
[89] No, now with these historic levels of border crossings under this administration, especially as we inch closer to November.
[90] With Biden and Harris in office, border crossings have reached historic levels.
[91] They're averaging around 2 million per year, and that doesn't include Godaways or the more than 1 million parole migrants.
[92] The total number of encounters is expected to hit 10 million by the end of this fiscal year.
[93] Now, trying to cut through some of that media spin for Harris, former President Trump, released a 30 second ad on the issue.
[94] Here's some audio of that.
[95] This is America's border czar, and she's failed us.
[96] Under Harris, over 10 million illegally here.
[97] A quarter of a million Americans dead from Petnor, brutal migrant crimes, and ISIS now here.
[98] Do you have any plans to visit the border?
[99] You haven't been to the border.
[100] And I haven't been to Europe.
[101] I mean, I don't understand the point that you're making.
[102] Now, the audio of Harris in that ad is from an ABC interview she did back in 2021.
[103] At that time, despite her position as borders are, as she was widely referred to, she had not visited the border a single time.
[104] She was ultimately pressured into going to El Paso, Texas in June of that year, but that was her only visit.
[105] And it was also not without criticism.
[106] In that six -hour trip, Harris never actually toured the border wall on foot and said she visited a processing center.
[107] Harris also did not meet with the then Border Patrol chief Raul Ortiz, who publicly complained about that.
[108] In fact, Harris has not met with either of the Border Patrol chiefs who've held the position during her tenure, nor has she met with the Border Patrol Council or with the governor of Texas Greg Abbott, the state hardest hit by the crisis.
[109] Abbott criticized Harris for being MIA on the issue and noted that 383 known terrorists have been apprehended at the border during her tenure.
[110] Here's Abbott on Fox News.
[111] Kamala is now running to be the president of the United States.
[112] Their job is to guard our national security.
[113] When it concerns guarding national security, Kamala Harris has been an abject failure and has endangered Americans.
[114] If we have a 9 -11 style attack, it is on the hands of Kamala Harris.
[115] We know the border and immigration is a top line issue for the American people, and Trump is polling far better on that issue.
[116] So have we seen a shift in Harris and other Democrats?
[117] as we get closer to November?
[118] I mean, yes and no. First of all, we did see Democrats Senator Elizabeth Warren say just on Sunday that a President Harris would work to basically give amnesty to the millions of migrants who've crossed into our nation illegally under Harris's watch.
[119] Here's Warren on CNN.
[120] I believe we need to create a pathway to citizenship.
[121] Kamala Harris will work with Congress and get that done.
[122] Harris is also on record saying that the U .S. should not treat those who cross.
[123] the border illegally as criminals.
[124] More recently, though, the Biden -Harris administration is claiming that they're the ones who are tough on the border and it's actually Republicans who are soft here.
[125] Following a House resolution condemning Harris' work as borders are, the White House issued this statement, quote, President Biden and Vice President Harris are leading on border security, while congressional Republicans sabotage it by disgracefully siding with Donald Trump, that null traffickers, and human smugglers over our national security.
[126] But the Border Patrol Union sees it far differently.
[127] They held a press conference this week, placing blame for the ongoing crisis directly on the Biden -Harris White House.
[128] The men and the women of the Border Patrol continue to be in this precarious position.
[129] They're stuck between their desire to do the job that they were trained to do and the White House's policies that prevent them from doing that job.
[130] I'll also note that the border is not the only issue Harris is publicly flipping on.
[131] She's on video supporting an outright ban on frag.
[132] during her last presidential run, but she's since backed away from that.
[133] She also pushed for gun confiscation through a mandatory gun buyback program.
[134] That would confiscate up to 10 million guns in the U .S. She's backed away from that, too.
[135] She oversaw thousands of convictions for marijuana violations as California AG, but is now for marijuana legalization.
[136] And she's also distanced herself from statements supporting the defund the police movement and her promotion of a controversial bail fund to bail out violent rioters.
[137] was sort of a dizzying series of reversals there.
[138] Yeah, make your husband.
[139] Amanda, thanks so much for reporting.
[140] You're welcome.
[141] J .D. Vance is just three years into his political career, but he's already a top target of Democrats and their allies in the media.
[142] And they're trying to characterize the Ohio Senator as weird.
[143] Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce is here to talk about the attacks on Vance and how they could play into the election.
[144] So, Tim, first off, tell us about the attack line against.
[145] against Vance that we've seen crop up all across the media this past week.
[146] Well, it's weird, as in that's what the Harris campaign has called him, and that's what numerous pundits and others on the networks have parroted it as well.
[147] According to data from Gravian, CNN and MSNBC broadcast some form of the Vance is Weird line more than 150 times over the weekend.
[148] Here's a bit of what that sounded like put together by Gravian.
[149] These guys are just plain weird.
[150] Vance as weird?
[151] You know, as the campaign said, weird?
[152] It really is just plain weird.
[153] Jady Vance playing weird.
[154] It is kind of weird.
[155] Trump and Vance are just weird.
[156] One clip of Vance in particular that has resurfaced since he joined the Republican presidential ticket is a 2021 clip of Vance on Tucker Carlson tonight before Fox News canceled Carlson's show.
[157] In the clip, Vance spoke out against, quote, childless cat ladies that run the United States.
[158] Here's some of it.
[159] We're effectively run in this country via the Democrats, via our corporate oligarchs, by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their.
[160] their own lives and the choices that they've made.
[161] And so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.
[162] Now, we should note that that was before Vance began his political career, and he likely wasn't watching his words as carefully as he does now.
[163] And has Vance responded to this new level of scrutiny and or this attack?
[164] Yeah, Vance is a fighter.
[165] So over the weekend, he posted this clip of Kamala Harris, sarcastically captioning it, Vance is weird.
[166] And my pronouns are she, her, and hers.
[167] She, her, and her?
[168] Mine, too.
[169] All right.
[170] He's also become a more polished and more careful speaker since his quip about childless cat ladies.
[171] Here he was on Megan Kelly's podcast recently.
[172] It is interesting to sort of hear how fascinated these people were with my story five, ten years ago.
[173] And now that I am on the presidential ticket, they've decided that I'm the worst possible guy in the world.
[174] It's not surprising, Megan.
[175] And it's kind of what I signed up for, right?
[176] I mean, I want to make people's lives better.
[177] My whole idea here, and the reason I accepted President Trump's invitation to join the ticket, is because I think that Americans have been screwed over by a lot of stupid policies.
[178] I'd like to change that.
[179] And at the cost of changing that, as people like Joy Reid used to say nice things about me, and now they lie about me, whatever.
[180] Well, Vance has also been under attack for his approach on policy as well.
[181] What's happening on that front?
[182] Yeah, he's gone on record pushing a number of policies that incentivize Americans to have more children and to make those children easier to raise, such as special tax breaks for parents.
[183] That view has been ridiculed in the press by people such as MSNBC contributor, Molly Jong -Fast.
[184] This is this natalism that comes from an authoritarian playbook, right?
[185] That there need to be more white children, right?
[186] So don't misunderstand it for him wanting more children.
[187] He wants a certain kind of, you know, racist thing.
[188] That, of course, is on the extreme end of what's been said of Vance's policies.
[189] I should also note that Vance has three biracial children.
[190] So Jong Fas' criticism is at the very least not well thought out.
[191] Well, you know, I consider myself to be pretty weird and my friends as well.
[192] So I don't know, it's an interesting criticism.
[193] I'm not sure if it necessarily lands.
[194] Tim, thanks for reporting.
[195] Thanks for having me on.
[196] And in a developing story, the top leader of Hamas has reportedly been assassinated while in Iran.
[197] Iranian officials confirmed last night that Ishmael Haneo was killed in Tehran during the inauguration of Iran's new president.
[198] Many details are still unclear, including who carried out the attack, but it was publicly known that Israel has been hunting down Hamas officials since the October 7th attack.
[199] We will have more on this story as more details emerge.
[200] Thanks for waking up with us.
[201] We'll be back later this afternoon with more news you need to know.
