[3] In 2011, something strange began to happen at a high school in upstate New York.

[4] A mystery illness, bizarre symptoms, and spreading fast.

[5] What's the answer?

[6] And what do you do if they tell you it's all in your head?

[7] Hysterical.

[8] A new podcast from Wondry and Pineapple Street Studios.

[10] We were in bed at night, phone rang, and it was Amy on the other end, and she was in tears.

[11] Anytime your children call you in tears, your first reactions to panic and to fear that something significantly wrong.

[12] She was just trying to survive day to day.

[13] Living in a constant state of fear and anxiety, was this person going to show up?

[14] Where were they?

[15] What was going to happen?

[16] He has used this technology to do evil and to abuse and to terrorize.

[17] It is terrorism and it is violent.

[18] It has an impact beyond the dating app, beyond the internet.

[19] This is a life sentence for all of us.

[20] When the additional personal targeting came in, that's when a lot of this escalated and how we needed some of that outside law enforcement help.

[21] We were locking the doors to our offices.

[22] There was a fear of really a lack of understanding of what is this individual's motive, because it was never clear to us.

[23] Did he have violent plans for further down the road, or did he just get joy out of taunting his victims?

[24] Whenever this beast of prey decides to go on a hunt, he utilizes calculated webs of deceit, vicious malice, and without any regard to the fact that Amy is an act.

[25] actual living, breathing female human beings.

[26] Then he started going after my wife and her employee.

[27] What we were concerned about is how aggressive he was being and was he actually going to do something to physically hurt someone.

[28] I remember when he finally found me, you're just so dumbfounded and taken back from it.

[29] But then to realize that this was all part of this and connected, that anger just comes back.

[30] I don't understand how someone gleefully and surgically, with great skill, cuts through somebody's life like that and puts them at risk for evil to be done by other people who are sick.

[31] I loaded my Glock 19, drove to her place, and set up in case this person was going to try to harm her.

[32] She was definitely scared to death, and that was the first of many nights I spent at Amy's place.

[33] Comments on this post have been limited.

[34] Hugo says hi.

[35] Amy.

[36] Amy, where are you?

[37] I know.

[38] He was very smart, and I knew that.

[39] He wasn't as smart as I was and he fucked with the wrong person.

[43] She struck him with her motor vehicle.

[44] She had been under the influence and she left him there.

[45] In January 2022, local woman Karen Reed was implicated in the mysterious death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O 'Keefe.

[46] It was alleged that after an innocent night out for drinks with friends, Karen and John got into a lover's quarrel en route to the next location.

[47] What happens next?

[48] Depends on who you ask.

[49] Was it a crime of passion?

[50] If you believe the prosecution, it's because the evidence was so compelling.

[51] This was clearly an intentional act.

[52] And his cause of death was blunt force trauma with hypothermia.

[53] Or a corrupt police cover -up.

[54] If you believe the defense theory, however, this was all a cover -up to prevent one of their own from going down.

[55] Everyone had an opinion.

[56] And after the 10 -week trial, the jury could not come to a unanimous decision.

[57] To end in a mistrial, it's just a confirmation of just how complicated this case is.

[58] Law and crime presents the most in -depth analysis to date of the sensational case in Karen.
