[1] It's Thursday, January 26th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
[2] The National Archives is now officially requesting that former U .S. presidents and vice presidents review their personal records for any classified documents or other presidential records.
[3] In a letter sent Thursday to presidential representatives from the last six administrations, the National Archives asked that they checked their files for, quote, inadvertently retained presidential records.
[4] The letter states that, quote, the responsibility to comply with the Presidential Records Act does not diminish after the end of an administration.
[5] The man who killed eight people by driving his truck into a popular New York City bike path back in 2017 has been convicted of 28 federal crimes and may face the death penalty.
[6] The 34 -year -old Uzbekistani citizen is accused of being an Islamic extremist, which is what motivated his horrific attack.
[7] A San Francisco judge has ordered that police body cam footage related to, to an October attack on Paul Pelosi be released.
[8] The order comes after a coalition of news outlets filed a motion to release the footage on January 11th.
[9] The coalition included The New York Times, Washington Post, and Fox News.
[10] Russian forces hit several Ukrainian provinces with missiles and self -exploding drones early on Thursday, that's according to Ukrainian officials, and killed at least 11 people in all.
[11] The attacks follow Russia's apparent strategy of striking power plants and other critical infrastructure about every two weeks.
[12] The most recent attack comes after both Germany and the United States promised Wednesday to send high -tech battle tanks to Ukraine and green -lit other allies to do the same.
[13] After 19 months of speculation, prosecutors presented their evidence Wednesday in the murder case against South Carolina attorney Alex Murdof, who was accused of murdering his wife and son.
[14] Prosecutors showed gunshot residue on a seatbelt and bullets pulled from bodies that matched ammunition boxes from around the home.
[15] The defense said prosecutors incorrectly locked in on Murdoz's guilt from the start and that bits of the evidence can be explained away or leave an incomplete picture in a story that frames the wrong man. Here's a bit from each of those opening statements.
[16] The evidence is going to be such that you're going to reach the inescapable conclusion that Alec murdered Baggy and Paul that he was the storm, that the storm was coming for them and the storm arrived on June 7th, 2021, just like the storms that are heading here right now.

[19] They're his theories, his conjecture.
[20] He didn't do it.
[21] He is presumed innocent.
[22] As you sit there right now, when you look at him, you have to believe he is innocent.
[23] Five officers involved in the death of Tyree Nichols are in custody, according to the Memphis police.
[24] All five former.
[25] officers face several charges, including aggravated assault, official misconduct, and second -degree murder.
[26] Officials say Nichols was pulled over in Memphis on January 7th for alleged reckless driving.
[27] Police say a confrontation followed, and then Nichols ran off, eventually leading to another, quote, confrontation, in which Nichols complained about being short of breath.
[28] Attorneys for Nichols family, who reviewed the footage, claim that Nichols was beaten, quote, like a human pinata for three minutes.
[29] was transported to a hospital in an ambulance and died three days later.
[30] The Memphis police chief condemned the incident.
[31] This is not just a professional failing.
[32] This is a failing of basic humanity toward another individual.
[33] This incident was heinous, reckless, and inhumane.
[34] A 55 -year -old dual citizen of Canada and France pleaded guilty Wednesday to a failed attempt to poison numerous public officials by mailing threatening letters containing homemade rhizzen toxins to their homes.
[35] including the former President Trump at the White House in 2020.
[36] According to the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis, the American economy grew at a 2 .9 % annualized rate in the fourth quarter of 2022, slightly surpassing expectations as recessionary concerns loom.
[37] Republican Senator Ted Cruz put forward legislation this week that would ban non -citizens and illegal aliens from voting in local D .C. elections.
[38] In October, the D .C. City Council passed a bill that would let non -citizens, cast their vote in municipal elections.
[39] Americans are projected to spend almost $26 billion on Valentine's Day.
[40] That's according to the National Retail Federation.
