'Rabbit Hole,' Episode 8: 'We Go All'

[3] I remember before the Internet, and the minute the Internet was available, I had private tutors come over to my house and teach me. From day one, the awe of it, and the whole world is at your fingertips with a few clicks of your mouth.

[4] The power.

[5] I love it.

[6] Takes my breath away.

[7] Would you do me a favor and just introduce yourself real quick?

[8] I don't want to use my name.

[9] Okay.

[10] Can you just introduce yourself maybe just with your first name?

[11] Well, I can't know because that's my name on Twitter.

[12] My nickname is Sam.

[13] So you can just call me Sam.

[14] Sure.

[15] Do you want me to do an introduction?

[16] Like, hi, this is Sam.

[17] I got out of the Q called.

[18] So should you?

[19] Had you ever been attracted to a conspiracy?

[20] theory before?

[21] No. No, not at all.

[22] The 9 -11, the moon, the flat art. No, but I know the financial system is rigged against us.

[23] I've watched it.

[24] I've lived it.

[25] Let's talk about the speed with which we are watching this market deteriorate.

[26] In 2008.

[27] Traders say this is the craziest day they have ever seen it.

[28] I lost everything in the housing collapse.

[29] Houses are in foreclosure in a slump triggered by subprime mortgage.

[30] Many say they've been left in shock and are simply waiting to see what will happen next.

[31] And then $700 billion to rescue the country's failing banks.

[32] The government bailed out all the banks.

[33] The banks got all the money, got all the houses, got all the bailout money.

[34] And you can't help but reflect upon all that you've managed to lose because of the unfair banking system.

[35] And I was, you know, kind of in mourning.

[36] And so I had different stages.

[37] You go through a grieving process.

[38] you go to anger.

[39] I pretty much got stuck in anger.

[40] Holy moly.

[41] And then...

[42] They're calling this the big one, perhaps the worst in a generation.

[43] When Irma came through...

[44] More than six million Floridians have been told to evacuate.

[45] It was just devastated again.

[46] Tonight, the images now emerging of the utter destruction Hurricane Irma left behind.

[47] It was a nightmare.

[48] Buildings and trees ripped apart.

[49] Hundreds now homeless.

[50] I got out with maybe 10 % of my belongings on my car.

[51] And my friend said, well, just come live with me. I'd known him 10 years.

[52] And so I didn't mind coming and moving in as a roommate.

[53] I was here in a new town living in a living room, like the kid that just got out of college and was trying to figure out what to do with their life.

[54] So I was very emotionally fragile at that time.

[55] And I wasn't working.

[56] I had a lot of time on my hands.

[57] I spent a lot of time online I had the whole house for myself all day and I would put YouTube onto giant TV and then YouTube recommended the Q and on to me that's how I found them before you found Q like right before that what YouTube videos were you watching before Q Mm -hmm What a music.

[58] I would listen to whiskey.

[59] I tremble by turtles.

[60] And Panatonic, hallelujah.

[61] I watched Elizabeth Warren.

[62] America has always been some poor, some rich, and a big, big, solid middle class.

[63] She is amazing.

[64] It's part of what gives us our political stability.

[65] It's what affects our economy and drives in our economy.

[66] It affects our self -identity.

[67] It affects who we are in this world.

[68] She did an analysis of how the monetary system is set up to favor the wealthy.

[69] I fear that what's happening and what these data are about is that we actually are going to see a larger upper class.

[70] And then the rest is just one long trail of underclass.

[71] It's about an hour and a half long video.

[72] I've probably watched it four times.

[73] And there it is.

[74] inflation adjusted dollars, a 76 % increase in what a family spends on a mortgage.

[75] That's the mortgage payment.

[76] It gave me an explanation as why it's so difficult to thrive.

[77] And I think what this means is that it's time to realign our political interests and alliances.

[78] It helped me to not personalize it.

[79] I did something wrong.

[80] To talk more about what's happening to these families.

[81] So with that, I'm going to quit and take as many questions as people have.

[82] And then I was watching Lynette Zang.

[83] If you had a $20 bill 20 years ago and you have a $20 bill today, nominally, they're identical.

[84] They're both $20 bills.

[85] But what that would buy you 20 years ago and what that buys you today is vastly different.

[86] She's been a financial analyst.

[87] The original JP Morgan said it best.

[88] Gold is money.

[89] Everything else is credit.

[90] She's definitely all about holding gold.

[107] For governments, the key in this is it's inflation.

[109] I mean, the whole thing is a con and now it's breaking down.

[138] How does the average person who is under constant financial stress by design find time to research and discern fact versus fiction they don't we are the news now she was a deep diver she was what I consider to be a research based analyst would POTUS make a serious accusation if truth wasn't about to come to light let's go back to POTUS's post again so he mentions look at the picture here it's our George Washington crossing the Delaware very impressive lady now DOD uses the same picture crossing the Delaware in my mind okay they're going to go after the bank.

[140] He says Rothschilds, cult leaders, church, banks, financial, so they control the banks and the financial institutions, the worldwide government control.

[141] And the politicians that are on the payola and doing deals behind closed doors that are unaudited.

[185] What got me out was they posted Bible verses and I just immediately knew.

[186] that it was fake.

[187] I was like, okay, let me get this straight.

[188] We're in military intelligence.

[189] We've got a secret channel that we can communicate.

[190] And we're going to processize about the Bible and risk a military channel that's leaking.

[191] No. So it makes no sense at all in me. It's because my father was military.

[192] I grew up in, you know, he was military ops.

[193] I knew that that was just a marketing toy.

[194] I mean, they were hitting their market base.

[195] Their market base are conservative church ladies, you know, the Middle America, the Joe Six -Pack, that's who they're marketing.

[196] And they wanted to bring the religious aspect in so they could broaden their base so they can make more money on the T -shirt and the mugs and the donations and the app membership.

[197] So you felt like Q, whoever it was, had been.

[198] taking a risk by posting these secrets and this classified information and that like if Q were real and really part of this military intelligence operation that they wouldn't post a Bible verse because it was you're either military intelligence or you're a preacher and if you're a military preacher you're in a chapel you're not in next to the president it's just logic it was just an instant, to me, an instant pulling back of the curtain of what they were doing.

[199] And the minute I saw that, I was just crestfallen because I knew that it was all fake.

[200] That was, and it was the instant, it was like a death.

[201] And then I was angry again.

[202] And I said, well, you know, there is no hope.

[203] This is just ridiculous.

[204] This is no way.

[205] This is not real.

[206] I've wasted three months of my life, researching, fakeness.

[207] I really felt like I'd been had.

[208] How much time are you spending online now?

[209] Well, now that the coronavirus lockdown has to be, you know, I'm not working.

[210] I'm spending quite a bit of time.

[211] I've probably spent watching what's going on now probably about four hours a day.

[212] And do you ever worry that you could.

[213] fall into something like Q and on again?

[214] Absolutely not.

[215] I am so cynical.

[216] I am so done.

[217] I just don't believe anything anymore.

[218] Well, say more about that.

[219] I mean, I lost my job because of the COVID.

[220] I was best for retirement this year.

[221] And I haven't worked.

[222] My kids haven't worked because we're all in hospitality.

[223] And I have tried to reach unemployment for three weeks.

[224] I got him on the phone today.

[225] She's been an hour trying to register me for unemployment, and the computer went in letter, and she can't sell, she can't mail me a letter.

[226] She can't call me back.

[227] So I have to spend another three weeks trying to get them on the phone.

[228] In the meantime, my landlord gave me a three -day notice in the middle of a rent moratorium.

[229] I guess I'm...

[230] No, I'm so done.

[231] It's not there.

[232] There's no awakening.

[233] Yeah, I mean, I guess I'm remembering you saying that when you found Q, you were pretty cynical and thought, you know, the government was screwing you and things were unfair and you had a lot of time on your hands.

[234] And I think, I mean, that's sort of what you're saying your life is like now, right?

[235] Yeah.

[236] Full me once, shame on you.

[237] Foll me twice, shame on me. No way.

[238] Q is a lie.

[239] Our system is all set up to be towards the people in control.

[240] But isn't that what Q is saying?

[241] He is saying that, and that's why I got stuck in.

[242] But remember, he's also saying that he talks to the president and that until he's getting his direct from the government.

[243] My thing is the source.

[244] Q's source is a lie.

[245] therefore anything he says or shoe drops say are suspect unquestionable.

[246] Even though you don't think Q is real, you're still allowing that some of what Q has said might be true.

[247] Those things were true before I found Q and those things are marketing tools for Q to grow his client base.

[248] Do you still believe in some sort of global cabal?

[249] It's not whether I believe it or not.

[250] It's true.

[251] QAnon as a movement continues to grow.

[252] And as it does, its message is being amplified by people with real political power, including President Trump.

[253] Although he's never explicitly acknowledged the conspiracy theory.

[254] He has retweeted profiles with a Q &No logo and Q &N messaging in their bios.

[255] He's also met and taken an overall...

[256] Who has used his Twitter account to retweet or respond to Q &N messages or Q &N -related accounts dozens of times.

[257] We're in the, I guess we're in the opening acts of the Trump rally in Sunrise, Florida.

[258] Arena is filling up.

[259] There's still about two hours left to go before President Trump is slated to speak.

[260] And we are looking for Q and on people.

[261] Oh, I see one.

[262] There's one behind.

[263] You see a guy in a Q shirt?

[264] Excuse me. Do you have a second to the chat?

[265] I noticed your shirt has Q on it.

[266] We're talking to people who are interested in Q here.

[267] I actually got this outside.

[271] The Calm Before the Storm, the Great Awakening Justice.

[274] QAnon.

[275] Yeah, it's a great awakening.

[276] Can you explain what's on your shirt?

[277] Well, it stands for Q &ON.

[278] Yeah, Q &N.

[279] Awesome.

[281] It's kind of an alternative that's building up an audience.

[282] What it means is taking back what belongs to you from the government.

[283] Hi, ma 'am.

[284] We're talking to people about Q &ONON.

[285] Have you heard of Q &O?

[286] Yes, I am.

[287] I believe in it.

[288] I don't think it's a conspiracy.

[289] I think that in 10, 20 years, it'll be probably part of history classes.

[290] I mean, it'll probably be something kids are learning in, you know, middle school.

[291] of how it's changing history.

[292] So, Silicon Valley, they want to control what you see.

[293] And they are giving you a myth right now.

[294] They're acting like we are the ones showing an untruthful message.

[295] But they're actually doing the most untruthful thing you can do in America to shut off free speech.

[296] And the media is not doing their job.

[297] They think it's great because it fits their agenda.

[298] These companies try to do it.

[299] They want to suppress your vote in 2020.

[300] What we need to continue to fight back.

[301] And the way we fight back is get online ourselves, we get connected, sign up for emails.

[302] We have to ask your friends and neighbors and sign up to volunteer.

[303] Because their agenda is the president not to win in 2020.

[304] They want to be enshrered.

[305] They get controlled back.

[306] The establishment.

[307] They want the deep state back in control.

[308] Because when President Trump won at 2016, it was at the end of the battle.

[309] It was the beginning of the battle.

[310] The CEO of YouTube, Her Majesty.

[311] Susan Wachiske has decided that she is the arbiter of truth.

[312] Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, stands by decision to fact -check Trump.

[313] You can't just take what you like, Mark Zuckerberg, and get rid of the stuff you don't like.

[314] So these are the people controlling which you're now allowed to think.

[315] can say in America.

[316] Monopolistic power over the public square.

[317] Taking content down off of Twitter, off of YouTube.

[318] That is the modern equivalent of book burning.

[319] All right.

[320] So, Kevin, as you and I are talking today, in June 2020, a year into all of this, kind of a big question, but like, where is it things stand with the internet?

[321] Well, right now we're in this really interesting moment.

[322] All these big social media platforms, they're getting more criticism than they ever have.

[323] They've had unchecked power to censor, restrict, edit, shape, hide, alter, virtually any form of communication between private citizens.

[324] With some of the loudest voices saying that they're exerting too much control over what appears on their platforms.

[325] It's likely we'll see this moment as a turning point in the way we live in this country, a sharp break with 250 years of law and custom.

[326] And as they pull more things down and make more new rules...

[327] Obviously, they have a political motivation for removing information.

[328] That act of control actually fuels this notion among certain corners of the internet.

[329] If anything, that actually makes me want to watch them even more.

[330] Because if there's something in there that the media doesn't want me to see, hell, I want to see it.

[331] That there is this secret forbidden knowledge out there.

[332] I want to know what it is that's so damn.

[333] to the official narrative, that they want to hide it from me. At the exact same time...

[334] The World Wide Web is now more connected than ever before.

[335] Tens of millions of people suddenly forced to stay in and log in.

[336] They have never been more popular.

[337] Social media usage has ramped up significantly during the lockdown.

[338] This is unprecedented that we're seeing this kind of demand.

[339] Twitter just reported that its usage has grown 23 % since last year.

[340] Facebook has said that in some of the countries that were hit hardest by the coronavirus, the time that people are spending on its apps has increased by as much as 70%.

[341] And so many people are watching so much YouTube.

[342] The massive migration online is putting our internet infrastructure to the test.

[343] People are asking, will all of this break the internet?

[344] That the company actually had to lower the quality of its videos to keep the internet from overloading.

[345] YouTube wouldn't tell me exactly how much watch time has jumped up, but one data firm estimated that 15 % of all traffic on the Internet right now is coming from people watching YouTube videos.

[346] That's almost double what it was last year.

[347] Testing, testing.

[348] Testing.

[349] How are you?

[350] I'm Kevin.

[352] Can I ask you a question?

[353] You tell me, honestly.

[354] How much, like, YouTube would you say you guys watch a day?

[355] Too much?

[356] All of my time, every single fucking day.

[357] Too much.

[358] It's like, oh, I got so much to do, and then at 3.

[359] I'm like, huh, look at that.

[360] And then I don't stop.

[361] I'm, like, basically always doing it.

[362] Like, if I'm out on a walk, I'm using my data to watch YouTube.

[363] And just looking forward to what this all means, what do you like about your favorite YouTubers?

[364] Well, they just really inspire me. Like, they give me more ideas of what I should do, because when I get older, I want to at least have a YouTube channel.

[365] In survey after survey over the last few years, when young people around the world are asked what they want to do with their lives.

[366] Honestly, my main goal was I would love to be a YouTuber.

[367] Like, that was the goal.

[368] They respond that they want to be online influencers.

[369] I was stuck in a world where I felt so creative all the time in school, but I didn't know how I could use that.

[370] Everybody was telling me, oh, you have to be a doctor.

[371] Oh, you have to do this?

[372] There was this one survey where they gave kids a bunch of options.

[373] Like, do you want to be a scientist or a lawyer?

[374] or an astronaut.

[375] And the kids basically said overwhelmingly, like, no, I want to be famous on social media.

[376] At first, I did it for fun, but, like, starting to grow older, you can think, like, actually you can turn it into career and you meet awesome people from it.

[377] Last year, I actually went to go talk to some of those aspiring online influencers at this event called VidCon.

[378] So why do you guys come to VidCon?

[379] Mostly to, like, collab with my friends and meet everyone.

[380] Yeah, I just want to meet all my friends that are on the Internet that I haven't been.

[381] Which is the biggest convention of social media influencers in the world.

[382] Why are you guys here?

[383] My goal is to boost my watch time.

[384] So I would just kind of like to learn some of the trends and kind of how to navigate the algorithm a little better.

[385] I'm here.

[386] I'm here to collab.

[387] I'm also here to talk to companies.

[388] Like next year, I don't want to pay to go to Bitcoin.

[389] I want to get invited.

[390] And all these influencers show up.

[391] Oh, we got screaming fans over here.

[392] In Southern California.

[393] People are lining up to take selfies with their entourages, and they do these meet and greets with their fans, and they get courted by agents and all these huge brands.

[394] I'm here at the YouTube party, a bunch of people hanging out.

[395] And then they go off to these, like, lavish private parties.

[396] There must be a thousand people in here.

[397] And it's kind of a big celebration of this multi -billion -dollar industry that a ton of people are clamoring to break into.

[398] and increasingly where they told me they were trying to break in and get noticed YouTube is slowly but surely dying the creators are getting like worse I guess I feel like they're just trying too hard to be like everyone else and not being themselves wasn't YouTube are there more TikTokers or YouTubers here TikTokers there's more TikToks yeah a lot of tick on it was TikTok It was TikTok I'm obsessed with me I'm even know how they did It's full of, like, silly lip syncs and memes.

[399] Irish, British, Indian, a Tiktocker.

[400] People dancing to pop songs, lots of animals, lots of cats.

[401] It's just fun.

[402] Which is exactly how it was designed to feel.

[403] And what do you mean by that?

[404] So unlike a lot of American social media companies, which started off as basically open platforms and have only recently started to implement more rules and restrictions, TikTok is owned by this Chinese company, Bite Dance, which has been way more heavy -handed in curating and controlling what appears on its app, whether that's meant like hiding controversial political speech or more subtle things, like making sure that the people whose posts show up on the main feed look happy and beautiful.

[405] And it seems like what they're really trying to do is to create the most entertaining, light, glossy version of reality that they can.

[406] Does anyone want to be in my TikTok?

[407] TikTok is definitely the place to build an audience right now.

[408] It's so open and creative.

[409] As of right now, TikTok is their ad to be on me. And it's working.

[410] Like, people love TikTok.

[411] They've downloaded it something like 1 .5 billion times.

[412] TikTok is very easy to get followers.

[413] It's the fastest growing app in the world.

[414] I got thousands of views.

[415] Just as a point of context, like, the number one star on TikTok is a 16 -year -old girl who went from zero to 60 million followers in a year.

[416] And we were able to get a viral hit just because people liked the video and it was seen.

[417] Which took PewDiePie on YouTube eight years.

[418] How many hours a day do you think you spend on TikTok?

[419] Too much.

[420] Too much.

[421] I honestly.

[422] If I checked your phone, like would it be like six hours?

[423] Yeah.

[424] Around there.

[425] Maybe more.

[426] Like 10 hours?

[427] 10 hours a day on TikTok.

[428] Yeah.

[429] And of course, a lot of what's fueling TikTok's success is an incredibly sophisticated algorithm.

[430] Just like the ones that run YouTube and Facebook and all the other big social media platforms, TikTok's algorithm is constantly learning from.

[431] people what they want to see and what will capture and keep their attention.

[432] And actually, ByteDance, this Chinese tech company, it doesn't even really see TikTok or any of the other apps it owns as its primary product.

[433] Because ByteDance has this huge advanced artificial intelligence lab, one of the biggest in the world.

[434] And its goal, way beyond just making a fun social media app, is to become the world leader in the development of superpowered AI.

[435] Okay, Kevin.

[436] So in our attempts to better understand what the internet is doing to us, here's where it sounds like we're landing.

[437] First, we know that the internet is largely being run by these sophisticated artificial intelligences that have tapped into our base impulses, our, like, deepest desires, whether we would admit that or not.

[438] And they've used that information to show us a picture of reality that is hyperbolic and polarizing and entertaining and essentially distorted.

[439] Right.

[440] And now there are even more of these algorithms than ever before, and they are getting even smarter.

[441] And they're doing that in part because the technology is just getting better, but it's also because we are giving them exactly what they are programmed to want, which is more of our attention.

[442] Right.

[443] And so in the end, what we have is a situation where the AIs keep showing us this distorted reality.

[444] And then we keep paying attention to that.

[445] And in doing so, we are telling them that we would like to see more of this distorted reality.

[446] And essentially, we're living inside of this loop that's getting faster and faster and showing us a world that is.

[447] getting more and more and more and more distorted.

[448] Right.

[449] And the more and more time we spend online, the more this distorted vision of the world actually becomes our reality.

[450] It spans the globe like a super highway.

[451] It is called Internet.

[452] The Internet gave us a whole world of excitement.

[453] new possibilities.

[454] So I guess this is a story of how it changed our lives.
