[0] At least five people are dead and 18 children are hospitalized after an SUV plowed into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

[1] What do we know about the suspect, his motives, and the reaction to the tragic loss of life?

[2] I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire Editor -in -Chief John Bickley.

[3] It's Tuesday, November 23rd, and this is Morning Wire.

[4] Thanksgiving travel is expected to reach near pre -pandemic levels this week.

[5] What can Americans expect as staff shortages, potential pilot -teenths?

[6] strikes in a brewing storm all aimed to derail holiday travel.

[7] And we'll take a look at how the Biden administration's attempts to fix supply chain issues might not be helping the ongoing crisis.

[8] Thanks for waking up with Morning Wire.

[9] Stay tuned.

[10] We have the news you need to know.

[11] This show is sponsored by Dwell.

[12] The wisdom of the Bible has stood the test of centuries, and reading it is well worth everyone's time.

[13] But having the time to read anything these days is increasingly difficult.

[14] Dwell is a five -star app that makes it so easy.

[15] easy to get into the Bible by providing a world -class listening experience.

[16] And today, you can try Dwell for free by going to Dwellap .io slash morningwire.

[18] After a man drove an SUV through a crowded Christmas parade on Sunday in Waukesha, Wisconsin, at least five people are dead and over 40 are injured, including 18 children.

[19] Here with more on this developing story is Daily Wire's Cabot Phillips.

[20] So Cabot, a really horrific incident here.

[21] What do we know so far?

[22] Yeah, the details of this were just awful.

[23] The parade was an annual tradition in Waukesha, a suburb of Milwaukee.

[24] Thousands of people were there lining the streets as local marching bands, dance teams, and politicians walked the parade route.

[25] Then around 440 local time, a red SUV plowed through a police barricade and started barreling down the parade route, running over attendees, including members of a quote, dancing grandmother group and children from a local Catholic school.

[26] Authority said the five people killed were between 52 and 81 years old and that 18 children including three sets of siblings were hospitalized and two of those children are still in critical condition as of Monday evening.

[27] Originally there were reports of gunfire so people thought it may have been a shooting as well but police did later confirm those shots were fired by an officer trying to stop the driver.

[28] Kaylee Starrell was at the parade and here's how she described the aftermath.

[29] And it was just a scene of pure chaos after that, you know, people running around, screaming and crying, people trying to get into the stores lining the parade route.

[30] And then you have other people going to help those that were hit in the street.

[31] So it was really just, it was chaos and it was very scary.

[32] Yeah, it's just tough to imagine.

[33] What do we know about the suspects so far?

[34] Shortly after the incident, police detained the driver of that SUV, a 39 -year -old black man from Wisconsin.

[35] I'll withhold his name, as the Daily Wire doesn't publish the names of mass killers, but he's now being charged with five counts of intentional homicide.

[36] Police now say, just before the parade, he was involved in a domestic dispute, where he was allegedly wielding a knife.

[37] Police were called, and he fled in that SUV before going on his rampage.

[38] But it is worth pointing out.

[39] Authorities have been clear this was an intentional act on his part.

[40] He was not in a high -speed chase, and he did go out of his way to run through barricades to make it on to the parade route.

[41] And on the video, which is really difficult to watch, it's clear that he was intentionally swerving his car into people.

[42] And another thing, police actually noted this was not the first time that this suspect had run someone over with his car.

[43] Yeah, there's been a lot of talk about his prior record.

[44] What can you tell us there?

[45] So at the beginning of the month, he was convicted of intentionally running over a woman with his car after a fight in a gas station, that it's left her hospitalized.

[46] He was arrested, but released after posting a thing, thousand dollar bond a thousand dollars yeah not a lot of money and a lot of people were furious that a violent criminal was let off with such a small bail especially given his history he's been charged with 16 different crimes since 1999 a lot of them violent including one where he nearly ran a police officer over with his car while fleeing a traffic stop and another last year where he fired a gun at a man during a fight in that case he was let off on just 500 dollar bail after firing a gun at a man yeah and details of the that criminal record do have a lot of people furious.

[47] And they're asking why he was even walking free in the first place and why he was let go on just a thousand dollar bail for a serious violent felony.

[48] The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office actually agreed.

[49] They announced Monday evening that they'd be investigating the, quote, inappropriately low bond that was set for him.

[50] We heard a lot of people on Monday bringing up his social media history.

[51] Do we have any more details there?

[52] Are there any answers on motive?

[53] So we don't have any answers.

[54] officially about the motive.

[55] Police have been clear on that front, though they did rule out an act of terrorism.

[56] But the suspect appeared to have a few social media accounts that were fairly active over the last year, and there was speculation that they could offer some insight into a motive.

[57] One post from 2020 that reportedly came from his Facebook account talked about assaulting white people, including one line that said, quote, the old white people to knock them the expletive out.

[58] Another post expressed anger over the Kyle Rittenhouse trial this week, leading some people to speculate that the two could be connected.

[59] But again, we still don't have confirmation on that front and police urge people to wait until the investigation was finished.

[60] Yeah, just an awful crime.

[61] Yeah.

[62] Cabot, thanks for the reporting.

[63] Absolutely.

[64] That was DailyWire's Cabot Phillips.

[69] With the holidays approaching, airports across the country are preparing for a return to normal travel.

[70] But with the airline system already under strain, many are worried about travel plans being impacted during this Thanksgiving holiday.

[71] Here to tell us more is DailyWire's Ian Howarth.

[72] So, Ian, what have we heard so far?

[73] Well, first off, in news that shouldn't really surprise anyone, travel this Thanksgiving is going to be very hectic.

[74] The TSA put out a press release last week saying that they expect the Thanksgiving travel period, which runs between Friday, November 19th and Sunday, November 28th, is going to be, you guessed it, busy, with the agency expecting to screen around 20 million passengers.

[75] That's up 80 % compared to last year with the TSA anticipating travel close to pre -pandemic levels.

[76] And the potential for plunging temperatures and a significant storm during Thanksgiving week is only increasing the concern that it's going to be a chaotic few days at the airport.

[77] And so what are the busiest travel days that we should try to avoid if we can?

[78] Well, according to the TSA, the busiest days are the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday afterwards.

[79] The highest travel day in TSA's history was actually the Sunday after Thanksgiving two years ago in 2019, when nearly 2 .9 million people were screened at TSA checkpoints across the country.

[80] And AAA predicting that a total of 53 million people are going to be traveling by plane, car, or train this holiday.

[81] So a few weeks ago, I think a lot of listeners are going to remember, there were massive delays and thousands of flights canceled.

[82] I believe it was Southwest and American that were most impacted.

[83] And there was a lot of speculation that it was caused by vaccine mandates.

[84] So should we expect similar staffing issues now that those OSHA orders are lifted?

[85] When it comes to the federal mandate, which includes TSA staff, they are expected to be fully vaccinated by the Monday of this week.

[86] But as of last month, 40 % of TSA workers were not vaccinated or had not submitted their vaccine documents.

[87] David Pocoski, who is the TSA's administrator, rejected the worry that this is going to throw this Thanksgiving travel season into chaos.

[88] And I don't think they should expect chaos.

[89] We work very closely with the airlines, with the airports.

[90] We have travel projections for the coming week.

[91] and we're very confident that this is going to be a very smooth operation over the next several days.

[92] And on the subject of the vaccine mandate for TSA employees, he's said that the number of people who had been vaccinated has increased and that he didn't expect the mandate to have any impact on travel.

[93] He was also pressed on a question concerning a lot of people, which is whether those who don't get vaccinated will lose their job.

[94] So we'll go through the process of looking at each one of those individual cases and make a determination over the next several weeks.

[95] So, yes, there is the potential, you do not have an approved exemption and you are not vaccinated, that you will lose your job because it's very important that we have our workforce fully vaccinated.

[96] Okay, so what about pilots?

[97] They've been at the center of a lot of these delays that we've seen with protests against vaccine mandates.

[98] Are there any updates there?

[99] Well, with some airlines postponing mandating vaccines, there has been some pressure released on that front, but there are a lot of other areas of friction.

[100] Southwest Airlines Pilots Union, for example, is reportedly considering picketing on Thanksgiving and Christmas, worried about increased schedules, lack of hotels, and general fatigue.

[101] But should Southwest Airlines continue its current trajectory, you can expect one or more pickets sometime in the fourth quarter.

[102] So it's really looking like vaccine mandates are just one piece of a much more complicated puzzle and one that's not going to get solved before the holidays.

[103] Right.

[104] Ian, thanks for the update.

[105] Thanks for having me. That's Daily Wires, Ian Howarth.

[106] The Biden administration has been trying to push ports in California to open for 24 hours a day in an attempt to fix some of the supply chain issues.

[107] But now, we're hearing their efforts might not be having their intended effect.

[108] Here to tell us more about the supply chain port issues is Daily Wire's Charlotte Pence -Bond.

[109] Charlotte, give us an update on this crisis with the ports.

[110] Sure.

[111] So as you guys have covered on this show, the U .S. is facing major supply chain issues, and Americans are definitely feeling it across the country.

[112] The pandemic caused massive backups in the system, and now everything is kind of thrown off.

[113] Of course, this is only adding to the increase in prices and inflation.

[114] Yeah, we've seen the reports that inflation was the highest in 31 years in October.

[115] That's exactly right.

[116] And many experts are concerned that the Biden administration's policies are making it worse.

[117] It seems like some of the solutions the Biden administration put forward are turning out to either be ineffective or just too slow.

[118] Turns out that having the ports stay open 24 hours doesn't exactly work.

[119] if other members of the supply chain don't work those times.

[120] The Southern California Ports Complex is a main focus because almost 40 % of the country's container imports, at least by volume, arrived there.

[121] One terminal expanded its hours to be open all the time Monday to Thursday, but when no truckers arrived at those times, they had to create restrictions.

[122] In September, it said it would only be open at night if 25 trucks created appointments.

[123] That's only happened one night, and just five big -rig trucks arrived.

[124] It's pretty expensive for these ports to stay open that many hours, And some truckers actually want to use the longer hours, but they say the appointment rules are too strict.

[125] Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently spoke about the 24 -hour opening in a discussion with the executive director of the port of Los Angeles.

[126] He essentially said it takes time to move to this kind of work schedule.

[127] First of all, let's recognize it's, of course, not flipping the switch.

[128] There are so many players, even just on the grounds of the port.

[129] And what we know is that that opening of the gate, so to speak, necessary but not sufficient.

[130] So the 24 -hour port idea doesn't appear to be working.

[131] Is there anything else being done to help with this?

[132] Well, other corporations like Walmart, Target, FedEx, and UPS have said they'll utilize weekends and nights to collect containers at the ports in Southern California.

[133] The ports also said that starting at the beginning of this month, they'd start charging for containers sitting on marine terminals for nine days or longer.

[134] They've put off charging the payment, but by November 8th, the amount of those containers had gone down by 20%.

[135] So some improvement there.

[136] Yeah, but the broader issues remain.

[137] The Biden administration has said the inflation Americans are experiencing is transitory, and hopefully these bottleneck issues will be fixed soon.

[138] But like you said, inflation is at a high and continues to climb.

[139] So Americans are watching their prices go up around the country, and they're waiting to see just how long this lasts.

[140] Definitely.

[141] And this is all heightened with the holidays coming up to.

[142] Yeah.

[143] Thanks for the reporting, Charlotte.

[144] That's Daily Wire's Charlotte Pince Bond.

[145] Other stories we're tracking this week.

[146] According to reports, the Taliban has told Afghanistan TV stations to stop broadcasting shows that feature female actors, while female newscasters have been ordered to wear headscarves.

[147] When the group initially toppled the Afghan government, the Taliban assured the public that they'd be less restrictive of women than they were during their previous reign.

[148] And in response to new Florida legislation blocking vaccine mandates, Disney announced on Friday that they will pause enforcement of their COVID -vaccination mandate for Florida -based employees.

[149] An internal memo sent to Disney employees states, as we assess the full impact of this new legislation, we are immediately pausing enforcement of our mandatory vaccination policy for Florida -based cast members and employees until further notice.
