The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz XX
[0] You're listening to Draft King's Network.
[1] Hello, welcome to The Hockey Show.
[2] My name is Roy Bellamy.
[3] That's David Druck of the Hockey News.
[4] We are going to get into the Oller's side of what happened on game seven of the Stanley Cup final.
[5] And we're also going to...
[6] Yeah, we know that.
[7] They lost.
[8] That's what happened.
[9] Like, I've been getting complaints that we are, quote, unquote, the Panthers show instead of the hockey show from some guy named Mango on YouTube.
[10] and to that guy I can say you can kiss my ass But anyway Mango like the character from S &L?
[11] Yeah, I don't know.
[12] I don't know SNL, there's an S &L character name Oh no, back in the day, Chris Gittam, Mango Like you don't remember that guy?
[13] No, no, no For another time, we'll do it.
[14] I stopped watching after Norm and Donald got fired but that's Neither here nor there.
[15] That's neither here nor there.
[16] Norm was great, weekend update host.
[17] Very underrated.
[18] Yes, he was excellent.
[19] He was excellent.
[20] And I stopped watching once he left.
[21] But again, Here or no there.
[22] We're also going to talk about it's wedding season right now.
[23] It's the summer.
[24] Yeah, it's the summer.
[25] When hockey players get married.
[26] It's cuffing season right now.
[27] So that's what's going on.
[28] We're going to talk about that in a second.
[29] But first, we're going to get into a bit of hockey news.
[30] Coming out of Toronto right now, we have a new captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
[31] The 26th captain in team history is now Austin Matthews.
[32] And his mustache.
[33] Yeah.
[34] He needs a haircut and a shave, really.
[35] I mean, they went from the veteran guy and John Tavares to, you know, the heir apparent.
[36] I mean, Austin Matthew, he's, what, you know, the best goal store in the lead right now.
[37] You have like 70 whatever goals or, you know, 69 goals.
[38] Nice.
[39] Hear no dare.
[40] No, but I get it, right?
[41] He's a good leader.
[42] Like, I feel like he's a guy that kind of steps up.
[43] He takes responsibility.
[44] Like, he's a good captain candidate.
[45] You know, it makes sense.
[46] It's a little strange when a guy hands the sea to another guy when they're both still playing.
[47] on the team.
[48] It doesn't happen all that often.
[49] Right.
[50] Yeah.
[51] But, I mean, you know, I think it's a good choice.
[52] I assume that John Tavares is going to end up being an alternate captain and get the A on his jersey, but him losing the captaincy is, uh, that's weird, man. Yeah, it doesn't happen very often.
[53] Like, I was looking up, like, past times where a guy was stripped or gave off the captaincy.
[54] It actually happened kind of back -to -back times in San Jose back in, like, the late 2000, early 2010s, when first Patrick Marlow lost the, you.
[55] to see after one of their many playoff collapses.
[56] Remember, the Sharks back then, they were in the playoffs every year.
[57] They were a cup contender every year.
[58] They finally got to the Cup.
[59] But, yeah, so after one of their collapses, they stripped Patrick Marlowe, gave it to Joe Thornton.
[60] And then the same thing happened to Joe Thornton a couple of years later.
[61] So it's rare, right?
[62] Like, I remember what happened with the Panthers, Mango.
[63] But that was to Derek McKenzie was retiring, right?
[64] Yeah.
[65] And they had that whole, like, mountain top, you know, it was like an Army Mountain Top thing where, like, they had a ceremony.
[66] where they gave it to Barkoff, so that was kind of cool.
[67] But I don't think there's any, like, you know, bad blood or ill will in this situation.
[68] Like, I don't think it's one of a situation where, you know, John Tavaar's, like, wringing his hands, like, oh, they took my C. Like, you know, I think it's okay.
[69] I mean, usually when you see that happen, it's usually the captain ends up moving on to another team that's traded or goes away in free agency.
[70] Like, window Clark, that happened to him when he left Toronto.
[71] He went to Quebec, I believe.
[72] Ah, the Nordicues, as I called them, when I was a little kid before.
[73] I knew anything.
[74] Right Rose, the Quebec Nordicues?
[75] No, I don't know.
[76] I mean, you don't know French, do you?
[77] Oh, yeah.
[78] Bon Joom, mademoiselle.
[79] Okay, well, there you go.
[80] Do you know what Nordique is?
[81] North.
[82] There you go.
[83] Yeah, the Quebec Northman.
[84] That's the name of what was the Quebec Nordique's.
[85] Yeah, the Colorado avalanche now.
[86] Before they moved to Colorado.
[87] They had great uniforms.
[88] Yes, yes, I love those uniforms.
[89] The Joe Sackic days in those white Nordic's uniforms.
[90] Like it's so clean.
[91] Even when they redid, I mean, they rebooted that alternate jersey for Colorado.
[92] Oh, for the reverse retro thing?
[93] Yeah, they made it in the avalanche colors.
[94] Yeah, the purple or whatever.
[95] It was okay.
[96] I thought it was great.
[97] Yeah.
[98] When I went to Colorado for the Cup Final against Tampa, I was looking for that cap.
[99] All they had was, you know, the state flag C with the sun in the middle.
[100] Yeah, I'm not a fan of that.
[101] Yeah, I'm not a fan of that.
[102] I wouldn't mind if they had just the foot logo.
[103] You know, they used to have the foot on the shoulder.
[104] Like, they don't even have the Sasquatch anymore, the mascots of St. Bernard.
[105] I thought that used to be, like, it was the most appropriate thing.
[106] When they had a guy named foot wearing a jersey that had a foot on the jersey, like, that felt right.
[107] Yeah.
[108] And Mike Ritchie, who looked like a foot.
[109] Yeah.
[110] And then he went to play for the Sharks.
[111] Yes.
[112] Of course.
[113] You never captained in that team.
[114] No, Mike Ritchie, fun player to watch?
[115] Yeah.
[116] Maybe not Captain Material.
[117] No. Moving on to the New York Rangers who would be losing San Roe.
[118] who's been in the broadcast booth for them for 40 years.
[119] And this will be his 40th and final season coming up for them.
[120] And he's had, I would say, two of the most famous calls in league history.
[121] Yeah, definitely Rangers history.
[122] In the same year, in the same year, mind you.
[123] And the first one, which we will throw to here, is the overtime goal from Stefan Matoe that won the Eastern Conference final against the New Jersey Devils.
[124] sent them to the Stanley Cup final against the Vancouver Canucks.
[125] Here it is.
[126] Batisov, it went off the leg, stays in the devil's zone.
[127] Matt Toll goes for the park.
[128] Mattel around the net.
[129] Matt Toll put it.
[130] Very cool.
[131] Obviously, everybody remembers Howie Rose's called.
[132] Yeah, I would say that would be the more famous up to.
[133] But as far as video is concerned, on television, I would be one of the most famous.
[134] And both of them, what I love, and you heard it there in Rosen's voice, and we'll hear it again in a minute, is just you can hear the, I don't want to say the unprofessionalism, the emotion, the personal, how, like, important it is to him, the Rangers are going to the Stanley Cup.
[135] You felt it.
[136] Like, we felt something like that, like a month ago or whenever it was, you know, when the Panthers won.
[137] It was.
[138] When was the previous time that they won the Stanley Cup before that?
[139] 1940.
[140] Yeah.
[141] That's why.
[142] That's exactly why.
[143] Like, the Panthers are 31 years old now.
[144] Yeah.
[145] As they head into the new season, they had never won the Stanley Cup in their three appearances.
[146] they've won one this season.
[147] So, I mean, from that aspect, I mean, we've been waiting 30 years for that to happen.
[148] Just think about Rangers fans.
[149] Think about that famous sign of the guy holding up in the stand saying, now I can die in peace in game seven, which we will get to in the second.
[150] Think about that.
[151] For them to go to the Stanley Cup final, that was a big thing.
[152] Oh, yeah.
[153] And they were favored to win, although that Vancouver Canucks team, that was a pretty stacked team.
[154] No, that was half Cinderella, half Pavelberry, Trevor Linden, Kirk McClain played out of his mouth.
[155] Yeah, that game one, I think like 56 or 57 saves in game one at MSG that year.
[156] Yeah, it's too hot goal that's going into that series.
[157] It was a great playoff.
[158] It was a great final.
[159] Like that Eastern Conference final that we just saw end against the Rangers Devil series, like, you know, Messier's guarantee in game six.
[160] Kenan benching Richter.
[161] I think it was game four.
[162] Yeah, he had a – he benched a lot of players in his career.
[163] Well, you remember what he did.
[164] Don't give me start on that one, by the way.
[165] Remember what he did with the Panthers goalies?
[166] I think it was like 0 -1 -02 with Luongo and Trevor Kidd when he literally was platooning them every whistle.
[167] And literally treated one of them.
[168] Oh, my God.
[169] Anyway, we're getting off topic.
[170] Don't get me off topic.
[171] Yeah, we're getting off topic about Iron Mike Keenan.
[172] So, that's how he rose.
[173] Just, it's sad, dude.
[174] I'm going to miss him.
[175] One of the first times I saw him in the press box, like, you know, when I covered Panthers back in, like, 2018 or 19.
[176] Like, I had to take a picture with him.
[177] Yeah.
[178] Like, it was just cool.
[179] He's been around for.
[180] forever, and he's so good.
[181] The first thing I think when you say Howie Rose, it's a power play goal.
[182] San Rosen.
[183] Yeah.
[184] What did I say?
[185] You said Howie Rose.
[186] You said Howie Rose.
[187] Right now, Harry Rose, I feel bad for him because he has to cover the Mets.
[188] I'm sorry, Howie.
[189] Well.
[190] But, yeah, San Rosen, it's a power play goal, which is.
[191] Yeah, man, it's iconic.
[192] Yeah, keep overman always makes fun of San Rosen about that.
[193] I don't know why.
[194] It's a power play goal, but, you know.
[195] It is a power play goal.
[196] But, yeah.
[197] And it sounds great when he says it.
[198] Yeah, it does.
[199] It does.
[200] It puts a lot of emphasis on that one.
[201] The other, I would probably say one of the most famous calls in league history from St. Rosen, is Game 7, the one that, the final call, the one that won at all for the Rangers.
[202] Let's hear that.
[203] See, now, the thing about this is, simply the best wearing on the loudspeaker.
[204] That's John Davidson.
[205] Now, we are watching right now.
[206] Mark Messia lifted cup.
[207] It's cool.
[208] seen this after kind of you know as I said a minute ago like kind of experiencing our version of it um you know the the Panthers have their Sam Rosen in a man who listened to Sam Rosen growing up yeah Steve Goldstein so it's it's cool to have that kind of like a not connection but it's like you know the similarities just makes you feel like you're part of it a little bit well here's the thing about that call uh the clock was winding down and the Rangers ended up icing the puck with two seconds left.
[209] And Sam was just about to go into his...
[210] Actually, he started the final call early because of that icing call.
[211] So when you hear him say, the waiting is over, this will last a lifetime.
[212] It's because of that icing call.
[213] Yeah.
[214] So yeah, he...
[215] One of the most famous calls of all time was affected by an icing.
[216] Yeah, and a lot of toilet paper.
[217] Yeah.
[218] Because people with fans were throwing it all on the ice.
[219] It was like, It was celebration time.
[220] They had to clear it all off, had to get ready for the face off.
[221] That must have been excruciating for every Rangers fan in that building.
[222] Because you've been waiting 54 years, and all of a sudden it's like, oh, my God.
[223] It's up to a face -off.
[224] It's about to get taken away from us with one point, whatever seconds left.
[225] Yeah.
[226] Oh, God.
[227] Speaking of Game 7s in a Stanley Cup final, the Emerton All is lost.
[228] That's a good segue.
[229] Yeah, well, you know, it just happens to be that way.
[230] That's good.
[231] We planned these things.
[232] We had pre -production meetings for such a thing.
[233] So, the Oilers lost game seven of the Stanley Cup final this season to the Florida Panthers.
[234] And a couple of things happened.
[235] First thing was Connor McDavid won Kahn -Smith.
[236] He won the Kahn -Smite trophy.
[237] He did not go out to accept it.
[238] No. And we actually do have a video of that.
[239] And you can play the B -roll on that one.
[240] You can see the dejected faces of Aldermanton -Ollors.
[241] In the background, you can actually hear Jerry Bettman announcing Connor McDavid's name.
[242] Yeah.
[243] Actually, you can hear it right now.
[244] I can hear it because the pot's up.
[245] There it is right there.
[246] And there he is, sitting in the locker room.
[247] I wonder if, like, when they heard that, if, like, they all kind of looked at him, if anybody glanced over to see, like, I know how I handle losses.
[248] Like, there was a time in my life where if the dolphins lost, you did not want to be near me on a Sunday.
[249] And granted, my adult life has been a lot of rough Sundays.
[250] Yeah.
[251] And that has no, it's nowhere close to what any of these men are feeling right now.
[252] so I can't even imagine.
[253] You know, I would hate to be...
[254] That cameraman?
[255] Whoa.
[256] How awkward must that have been?
[257] Yeah.
[258] I would hate to be the locker room attendant, having to fetch the Kahn's Mike trophy, and then walk into the locker room and just dump that right in front of Khan of McDavid, like, there you go.
[259] Like, feel bad for the locker room attendant in Edmondson after Panthers lost team six.
[260] That was...
[261] I don't think we can talk about that, but...
[262] All we can say is...
[263] It took a while for us to get in the locker room.
[264] Yeah.
[265] It took a little while.
[266] Yeah, it took a little bit.
[267] I mean, if I was in locker room, I would have done the same thing.
[268] Yeah, no, no. Not judging them or calling it anything other than what it would.
[269] Edmonton probably feeling much worse than that.
[270] Yeah.
[271] But the exhaustion.
[272] Like, they were all so dejected, so tired.
[273] And then, in the midst of all that, Zach Hyman took it upon himself to speak to his teammates.
[274] It's, I liked what he said, Roy.
[275] Let's play it.
[276] Let's hear it.
[277] And then we'll talk about it.
[278] Hey, there's nothing that's going to make this feel better.
[279] Again, I have nothing we say.
[280] But I, I know we're going to be back.
[281] I go it.
[282] I just know we're going to be back to us.
[283] I know it in my heart.
[284] This is the worst feeling of the world.
[285] I hope everybody comes back.
[286] It's special.
[287] Well, Stan Bowman.
[288] now the general manager in running the team before I got that they made a little bit of change changes to the club but yeah for the most part they're still there and they most likely would win the once in conference final this upcoming season but I mean that remains to be seen but he's absolutely right like it doesn't make him feel any better but in the moment that's something I would actually love to the here.
[289] Yeah.
[290] You know what that reminded me of?
[291] Matthew Kichuk from a year before.
[292] Yeah.
[293] When he went to everybody and said, we'll be back.
[294] We're going to get there.
[295] That's what he said when they had the training camp.
[296] When I first saw that video, I'm like, wow, this is very, very familiar.
[297] And I don't know if Zach Hyman is, you know, him and Matthew Kichuk are maybe not the same guys, but to hear him kind of make those claims in that moment.
[298] And as you said, something that you'd want to hear if you were sitting there like that, you know, it says something about who that player is, what kind of man he is.
[299] And I like that.
[300] This is a learning experience for the Yemen to know as much like the Florida Panthers the season before.
[301] If they wouldn't the Stanley Cup final, good on them this upcoming season.
[302] And we'll see.
[303] We will see once the season starts in about a month and a half.
[304] So, moving on to something a little bit lighter.
[305] Alex Oveskin is a fat guy now.
[306] We've seen him play soccer just recently.
[307] and Dave, he looked pretty plump.
[308] I mean, as a person who used to be skinny and is now pretty plump, I can sympathize.
[309] Again, with the Dynamo Rita sweater, their jersey there, it's not a sweater, but look, at this point, I mean, Alex Ovechin, you write his own ticket.
[310] Yeah.
[311] Especially back home in Russia.
[312] Like, that man is beloved there.
[313] He's, you know, he's made no secrets about, you know, he's got love back, he's got love for everything back home.
[314] and, you know, it's fine, whatever.
[315] I don't know.
[316] It's funny.
[317] I saw on maybe draftings, I'm not totally sure, but somebody had a future bet out for Ovechton to break Gretzdy's record this season.
[318] What is he, like, 42 goals, 41 goals, something like that?
[319] Just about, yeah.
[320] I want to say it was plus 1 ,300.
[321] Oh, that's going to end up getting lower.
[322] What seems unbreakable is within reach.
[323] Yeah.
[324] That's unbelievable, really, man. That's incredible consistency by Ovechkin.
[325] Yeah, I mean, seriously, like multiple seasons of scoring 40?
[326] Man, if...
[327] I get it done.
[328] If only the NHO would have let the Panthers draft him with that a whole leap year malarkey that they tried.
[329] Yeah.
[330] Yeah.
[331] But good for you, Ovi.
[332] You play soccer after the hockey career, maybe break some Russian soccer goal records because, you know, obviously he's got a knack for putting the biscuit in the basketball.
[333] Alasovskine, like, you know, like, I wouldn't be surprised if he bought a KHO team or whatever the leagues in Russia right now.
[334] I wouldn't be surprised, like, be like Yarmier yager over there.
[335] Yeah, Sergei Fedorov.
[336] He took over his GM of CSCA.
[337] Pavel Burry.
[338] So, that'd be cool.
[339] Yeah, I would imagine he's going to stay in hockey.
[340] Yeah.
[341] Oh, absolutely.
[342] And maybe you'll see his son grow up to be the next generation.
[343] Yeah.
[344] Yeah, the next one.
[345] Yeah, the next one would be the next great eight.
[346] Yeah.
[347] That'd be cool.
[348] That would be cool for him.
[349] We did see a video of his son.
[350] As usual, playing hockey.
[351] I mean, that guy, that little guy can go at any rink.
[352] He's had a stick in his hand since, like, before he could walk.
[353] Yeah, he came out of the room with a stick.
[354] He's probably going barred down, like, you know, before his first birthday.
[355] Yeah, he's going to be sending up one time.
[356] It's on the face off so going to power plays.
[357] As I said before, it is cuffing season.
[358] And these mofos are getting married now, man. Like, they are getting hitched.
[359] And this is the only time of year that they can actually do it.
[360] Right.
[361] You know how it is with weddings.
[362] You have the long planning.
[363] A lot goes into it, so you can't do that during the season.
[364] And the most recent addition to the husband club right now in the league is Connor McDavid.
[365] Connor McDavid.
[366] So this is the whole reason that we're talking about this is like as I watched the McDavid wedding pictures and I've been thinking about other weddings that I've seen recently and maybe not so recently, what is up with hockey players like taking their shirts off or opening their shirts at weddings?
[367] Like I've been to a ton of weddings, so I get it.
[368] It's hot.
[369] you're dancing you're drinking like okay but when did it become appropriate to just start you know flaunting everything I you know I get it they're they're all cut you know they're good so I was wondering has this been a thing for a while and then we found this video that you see here this is ovechkin's wedding back in 2017 not quite as plump as he is now oh yeah years later six years later um but yeah so I guess it's it's an acceptable thing for hockey players I know know, recently, like Adam Fox got married, Panthers, Carter for Hage, got married, he too was Sturainen.
[370] Last summer was Sam Reinhardt.
[371] I don't know.
[372] Do I take my shirt off at the next wedding?
[373] Are they going to kick me out if I try that?
[374] Most likely, yeah.
[375] Like, you know, I'm actually looking forward to the pictures of Matthew Kachuk's wedding coming up.
[376] That's a bit wild.
[377] Yeah, that's going to be insane.
[378] Between him and his brother, hell.
[379] Maybe we'll see Keith Kachuk.
[380] What are the odds on Walt?
[381] Getting topless.
[382] Oh, yeah, absolutely.
[383] Rose thinks we're going to get an invite.
[384] No, they, no. Most likely, I mean, we would try to drink them under the table, except they'll probably lift the table.
[385] No, I don't think we could hang.
[386] I mean, maybe the only chance we could have is that these guys don't drink a lot during the season.
[387] So the tolerance could be lower if we get them early enough in the summer, that there'd be a chance.
[388] Yeah, it's going to have to be like mid -June.
[389] or at least the very first week of the off season like before the draft maybe we can get them then well now we got some dolls all right that was the hockey show for this week next week there is no hockey show because I will be in Key West cooking basically Rose will be there I'll be waiting for leftovers here if there are any yeah I wasn't saying it maybe not if there are any so I'll hope so because that's going to be That's going to be wild.
[390] Being out in the open ocean and fishing, catching lobster, and I can, we got tri -tips, New York strip, turkey breast, baby bag ribs.
[391] Those are four proteins that we are going to be cooking that Sunday.
[392] Season, season, season.
[393] Yep, yep.
[394] It won't be dry.
[395] It won't be unseason.
[396] It'll be very flavorful, much like this show.
