[205] Molly Shannon, first of all, I adore you.

[208] And I am very happy today to be talking about your book because a lot of celebrities, famous people write books and a lot of them just do it because, okay, I can do this.

[209] You have such an amazing story to tell.

[210] Just an incredible story and it's beautifully told.

[211] So I'm happy about that.

[212] And I'm also thrilled about a million different things that you've been doing on television.

[213] And so you're at my house.

[214] not long ago at a party.

[215] And I just, I think, if you recall, I was just talking to you about how you're just hitting on all cylinders and it made me really happy.

[217] Yeah, and then I tried to hug you and you were like, hey, whoa, remember that?

[218] And then Liza said, you know, Conan, you've got to go upstairs now.

[223] It was, it was, it got a little uncomfortable.

[225] Wait, you know what's so funny?

[226] I held you and you said, think that's long enough and I said just a little more just a little more and you said hey whoa and then I didn't you blew a whistle remember and I was escorted out of my own home oh no which is embarrassing to be taken to be ejected from your own own but it wasn't the first time it was the ninth time and that was just that holiday season constantly being thrown out of my own own but you did the right thing you stood up to me I'm just crazy it was important I don't know I've always felt a very special kinship to you.

[227] You and I were both hit over the head at birth with a massive sack of Irish Catholic.

[228] Oh my God.

[229] Heavy on the Irish, heavy on the Catholic.

[230] And I think we have similar craziness running through our brains.

[231] And so I've been very happy to get you on the show.

[232] But another thing is that we, I'm over here on this side of town a lot.

[233] And I'm here because we do the podcast here.

[234] And our headwriter Matt O 'Brien lives over here.

[235] So a lot of times I'll hook up with him and we'll get a bite to eat and we'll walk around.

[236] And every single time we pass this beautiful house and he goes, oh, that's Molly Shannon's house.

[237] And every time, what a weird.

[238] I love that.

[239] No, no, he does it because I think you've met him a few times, but he's just like, oh my God, it's such a, and he points out the house.

[240] And then he knows your security code, which is weird.

[241] It's not enough you get kicked out of your own house.

[242] You've got to drive by hers.

[243] Yeah, I know.

[244] Whenever I get kicked out of my house, I walk over in this part of town.

[245] I won't say where it is, but I will say the street on the number.

[246] But no, we pass it and it's just very nice house.

[247] And I always think the same thing, which is I have this urge to go up and knock on the door because you're that kind of person.

[248] Yeah, I would never do that.

[249] I would never do that with anybody.

[250] It would be like you and Jean -Claude von Damme.

[251] Those are the two I feel comfortable knocking on the door.

[252] Well, I just would walk on the door and he'd answer, and he'd probably wearing like some silk robe, and I would start fighting him.

[253] But you, you should do that sometimes.

[254] Here's the thing.

[255] Here's the thing.

[256] And I want to explain this to all our listeners around the world.

[257] This is something that nobody does in L .A. Yeah.

[258] It's an unwritten rule that you never do that.

[259] And it's considered weird.

[260] And I'm always thinking, oh, I just want to go knock on the door because it's Molly.

[261] I love Molly.

[262] Yeah, yeah.

[263] And I've met your husband, a bunch of times and I love him, Fritz, and I just am like, knock on the door and maybe you'll answer.

[264] And then I see us like playing a board game or something, no matter what you're doing.

[265] Is this the same with Jean -Claude Van der?

[266] Oh, Jean -Claudevon.

[267] We play Twister.

[268] Okay.

[269] But again, that turns into a kicking fight.

[270] I don't know.

[271] You know what's so funny, Conan?

[272] I've always wanted to be the type of person that's so relaxed that if somebody did that, I'd be like, come on in.

[273] Like, it's a very Irish thing.

[274] Like, come have a spot a tear.

[275] or a glass of whiskey.

[276] You know what I mean?

[277] Or have several bottles of whiskey.

[280] I just put some peat on the fire.

[281] We'll just sit around and tell stories.

[283] But I feel like everybody's so busy nowadays and this and that.

[284] We're both parents and we work in this.

[285] But I do fantasize about being that type of person who's like really in the moment and like, come on in.

[286] But you know what's so funny, Mike White's producer Dave Bernard does do that.

[288] He'll be like, ding -dong!

[289] He'll be like, Molly, Lucas Gage and I are driving around.

[290] Can we come over?

[291] And they do come over.

[292] They do still call first.

[293] And they stop over.

[294] I mean, he does text first to say, I'm nearby.

[295] Are you there?

[296] The one person I know in Los Angeles who will crash into my house and not call ahead or anything.

[297] Adam Sandler?

[298] Yes.

[299] I knew it.

[300] How did you know that?

[301] Because I just know.

[302] Oh, my God.

[303] That's crazy.

[304] Adam, right?

[305] So I've been in my house and I hear.

[306] Colney!

[307] And he doesn't even ring, there's like a bell.

[308] He doesn't even ring the bell.

[309] He doesn't even ring the bell.

[310] He'll come in and he's always wearing the same thing.

[311] He'd be wearing it, you know, walking down the street or playing basketball or if he gets a Nobel Prize and they put a medal around his neck.

[312] He'll be wearing those kind of long basketball gym shorts and big puffy sneakers and like a tank top.

[313] He comes crashing in the house.

[314] He'll be with his kids.

[315] He'll be like, come on.

[316] Hey, Connie, Connie, Connie, and he'll immediately say, we can't stay, we can't stay, we can't stay, we got to go.

[317] I know you don't want us here.

[318] And I'll be like, no, Adam, this is great.

[319] Have a seat.

[320] We'll watch you, no, no, no. And then within 30 seconds, we got to go.

[321] This man, we're not wanted.

[322] He and his kids were co -piling out of the house, and I won't even know what happened.

[323] But I can't believe you guessed it.

[324] I guessed it.

[326] I know that.

[327] You know why, too?

[328] Because I was just in Hawaii and with my kids, Stella Nolan.

[329] and all their friends.

[330] I took a bunch of kids to Hawaii and we were all having so much fun.

[331] And Adam was there too and I was like, come over.

[332] And they did.

[333] They came to the hotel.

[334] And, you know, Adam is very much like that, I think.

[335] Oh, he's sort of like, he's sort of like a more deranged version of Zorba the Greek.

[336] Like, he's, he's just when he's around, he's like, hey, let's go.

[337] Come over here.

[338] Let's have cookies.

[339] Let's get a milkshake.

[340] You know, he's, you know, so high on everyone getting together and having a good time.

[341] It's so funny that you just mentioned Hawaii because you mentioned it and I pictured you in White Lotus.

[342] Yeah.

[343] And it's so funny because I just now, I don't know how Hawaii feels about that show, but everyone's fantasy is going to Hawaii.

[344] And since that show, if anyone mentions Hawaii, I think, oh my God, white lotus.

[345] Someone's going to poop in my suit face.

[346] And then you were in it.

[347] And fantastic.

[348] Oh, thank you.

[349] you.

[350] One more thing I was going to say about Adam is that Adam is always like you.

[351] Adam has like that thing in him where he's always worried about everyone else to like make sure he takes care of everyone.

[352] So he would be very thoughtful if he was intruding or not wanting to bust in on your time.

[353] So he's a good person to do that.

[354] You know what I mean?

[355] He's great.

[356] He almost overdoes it because I'd like it.

[357] I love that guy.

[358] And so it would be nice if he stayed.

[359] So he has the impulse to come in and crash in.

[360] And then I'll say, oh, come on.

[361] Let's sit.

[362] Let's let's talk.

[363] How are you?

[364] I gotta go.

[365] I know when I'm not one.

[366] No, please.

[367] I've literally made a pillow that stitched a pillow that says, Adam, please stay.

[368] It's on the couch.

[369] That's so cute.

[370] I know you don't mean it.

[371] No, I stitched it myself.

[372] It took six weeks.

[373] I'm out of here.

[374] He's out of the door.

[375] But yeah, White Lotus, we were back there in Hawaii visiting when the show was airing.

[376] And I was like, oh my God, this is so crazy because it is like White Lotus.

[377] And I was reminding myself of the character that I played, but we had so much fun shooting that.

[378] Oh, my God.

[379] Adam makes almost all of his movies in Hawaii, and I think he sets, I mean, if Adam was going to play a soldier fighting in World War II in, like, France, in Paris, he'd insist they shoot it in Hawaii.

[380] And they'd put up a cardboard, Eiffel Tower in the background, and it'd be like palm trees, and people would be drinking, you know, mitis with flowers in them and saying, oh, it's Paris.

[381] Yeah, exactly.

[382] It's so true.

[383] He knows how to do it right.

[384] There's so much to talk about, first of all, I want to start because you've written this incredible memoir.

[385] And I've known your story.

[386] I think there are a lot of people out there that don't know your story.

[387] Yeah.

[388] And you tell it really beautifully, and there's some real darkness, but you tell it without pity.

[389] You know, you're someone who's just saying, hey, here's what happened.

[390] Yeah.

[391] You and your family was in a terrible automobile accident when you were four years old.

[392] Yeah.

[393] And in that crash, you lost your mother and a sister and a cousin.

[394] Yes, yes.

[395] And so you literally come to in the hospital, you know, I know we're taking a real hard turn here, but there's no other way to get into it.

[396] Yeah.

[397] There's a part that's just heartbreaking in the book where you don't know where your mom is and no one will tell you.

[398] Yes.

[399] They keep saying, everyone keeps saying, well, we'll get to that, you know, and your thought was she's in another room.

[400] Yeah, my thought was exactly conant.

[401] I was like, people were bringing us all these gifts, like toys, and, you know, trying to act really cheery.

[402] There were a lot of relatives.

[403] And I was just like, I want to see my mom.

[404] And my sister, Mary, was six at the time, so she and I survived.

[405] But I was like, where's my mom and where's Katie?

[406] And they wouldn't tell us.

[407] So I got myself dressed.

[408] finally because I was like, nobody's telling me we're there.

[409] And I figured they must be in another section.

[410] I was like, my mom must be up there with Katie in the baby section.

[411] Katie must be with all the babies because she's three and I really need to see her now.

[412] So I just insisted.

[413] So I put the robe on and I thought if I can just get up that ramp, I'll go through those double doors and they're probably up there.

[414] So I walked up and they were like, no, no, no, no, no, no. You can't go in that section.

[415] and they escorted me back to my bed.

[416] And I was just, yeah, so upset.

[417] And then finally a relative did tell me that they had died and gone to heaven.

[418] They pretty much told you, because I think in the book, which you say they, I don't know, even though they say initially that she died, they just say she's in heaven.

[419] Yeah, she's in heaven.

[420] And you're just trying to figure out, well, how do I, because it's a very strange thing to tell any child that information.

[421] but to go right to there in heaven, you were thinking, well, I don't understand.

[422] I mean, how do I get there?

[423] Because I need to go be with my mom.

[424] Yeah, exactly.

[425] You know what I mean?

[426] That to me was just like, it's not like, okay, check that box.

[427] We solve this problem because she knows she's in heaven because to you that just meant like, well, no, I still need my mom.

[428] So how do I get there?

[429] What do we do?

[430] Exactly.

[431] Yes, exactly.

[432] And I think that, right, they were trying to really tie it up like it's a good thing.

[433] Like, no, no, no. She's in heaven.

[434] Like with the angels.

[435] And I was like, you know, I really did, yeah, my thought was, please, how can we get there?

[436] Like, could we fly there or could we somehow see them or visit them or?

[437] Because I think you cannot understand at that age.

[438] It doesn't really make any sense.

[439] I think there's a big difference in losing a parent when you're four versus even seven or ten.

[440] And at that time, I was just like, it's like almost there was no way that I could accept that or grieve her at that time.

[441] because I think it would have, like, annihilated me, truly.

[442] So I just was like.

[443] It's almost protective that you didn't.

[444] Yeah.

[445] There's something maybe, I don't know, in our makeup or a biology, but a four -year -old can't possibly understand yet, which might be a blessing.

[446] Exactly, which might be a blessing, right?

[447] So it came up later in life, much later, grieving my mom through, like, dating and falling in love.

[448] I grieved my mom through relationships with men more.

[449] That was strange.

[450] if that didn't come up till then.

[451] But I was going to say that, yeah, right, it's like this fantasy that she'll be back at the house.

[452] So I made stuff up still waiting, hoping, like, you know, for a long time.

[453] Like, you know, I don't know.

[454] It was strange how a child's brain works.

[455] Yeah.

[456] I remember very early on you talking about your dad, I don't know if it was because of this experience he went through or if he was like this way anyway, but he had kind of a go for broke attitude, not conventional.

[457] almost rules don't apply attitude towards how you kids should see life.

[458] Yeah.

[459] Your sister.

[460] So it was, I mean, I remember you telling me this a long time ago, but you recount it in the book, this time that he just kind of dared you and your sister at a young age to get on a plane by yourself.

[461] See if you can get on a plane by yourselves and go somewhere.

[462] Yes, exactly.

[463] With no plan and no...

[464] Nothing.

[465] He didn't even think that you would do it, did he?

[466] No, he did not think that we would do it.

[467] It was actually me and my friend.

[468] Ann Rampt, who was my childhood friend, he was like, you should do that.

[469] That would be the greatest dare.

[470] And we were like very young.

[471] I think maybe like 11 and 13 or we were really young.

[472] I actually told the story in NPR so they had to fact check it and call Anne Rampton and Jolene Rampton, all that.

[473] But we don't fact check here.

[474] So just go for you.

[475] I wanted to get the age, right?

[476] I think it was 11 and 12.

[477] But basically, yes, he dared us and he never thought we would do it.

[478] And one summer day, we were like, we're going to do it.

[479] And so we told Anne Ram's brother, Tom, we're going to do it.

[480] We're going to try to hop a plane.

[481] And so, but we figured if that didn't work to get on a plane, get on some flight, we would go back and take a ballet class.

[482] So we were dressed in leotards because we were really into ballet.

[483] So we had pink leotards on with skirts and we had a change of clothes in a plastic bag and a few dollars.

[484] That was it.

[485] But how did you even buy a ticket?

[486] We didn't buy tickets.

[487] So basically what we did was we took the Rapid Transit and Shaker to Cleveland Hopkins Airport and we looked at the monitor and there was like a flight going to San Francisco and a flight to New York and I was like, let's take the one to New York.

[488] And we were like, yes.

[489] And this is before, you know, 9 -11.

[490] There was no security.

[491] So you could walk straight up to the gate.

[492] And then we went up to the gate and we said to the stewardess who was checking passengers on the plane.

[493] We just said, oh, would it be okay if we go say goodbye to my sister?

[494] It'll just be so quick.

[495] And she was like, oh, sure, go ahead, girls.

[496] So we just like sprinted down the runway in our pink leotards with our hair and buns.

[497] And we were like, and it wasn't a very crowded flight.

[498] So we just went to the back and then we ducked down so she couldn't see us.

[499] And then she forgot about us.

[500] And then all of a sudden it's like, you know, the plane's getting ready to take off.

[501] And we were like, oh my God, oh my God.

[502] And so we grabbed one of those hands and we were like just silently like, Hail Mary, full of Grace, Lord is with you.

[503] And then it was like, shh, up in the air.

[504] And we were like squeezing one another, dying.

[505] And we were so excited.

[506] And then she came over, you know, like 15 minutes later to ask us what we wanted to drink or eat as a snack, that same stewardess.

[507] And she was like, she looked like she was going to faint.

[508] She was like, can I get you, ladies?

[509] something to drink.

[510] Oh, she knew that she had been had.

[511] She knew.

[512] And then we thought we might get busted on the way out when the plane finally landed.

[513] We were like, are we going to get in trouble?

[514] But we did not.

[515] We just like, you know, went down the runway.

[516] And then we got to the front to exit the plane.

[517] And she was just like, bye, ladies.

[518] Oh, my God.

[519] She didn't want to get in trouble.

[520] I would do the same thing.

[521] I know.

[522] Like this.

[523] She looked really scared.

[524] We were like, we're in New York City.

[525] And we, yeah, we were 11 and 12.

[526] Because in a way, I could see this flight attendant thinking, if I don't acknowledge this, it's not my screw up.

[527] Yep.

[528] So maybe these two kids are never heard from again, but it doesn't come back to me. Doesn't come back to me. Bye -bye.

[529] Bye -bye.

[530] And we didn't have any money.

[531] So we were like, I had never been, you know, I'd heard about places in New York City on the television.

[532] So I was like, let's go to Rockefeller's.

[533] center.

[534] That's where we wanted to go.

[535] Isn't that weird?

[536] So we just asked strangers, like, how do you get to Rockefeller Center?

[537] And they were like, so we had to take the subway from the airport.

[538] So we walked, it's like a 30 -minute walk.

[539] So we walked and we jumped the turn to house because we didn't have any money.

[540] And then we got to New York City.

[541] I love that you're in, and keep in mind, you're dressed in ballet tutus the whole time.

[543] It was like two little ballerinas on a crime spree in New York City.

[544] It's amazing.

[546] And then we were hungry.

[547] And we went to a diner and we dined and dashed.

[548] We were like, we were just really bad.

[549] We stole things all day.

[550] Like, I love New York T -shirts.

[551] And then we called my dad.

[552] And how did that go over?

[553] It was fine, because he couldn't be mad because he had dared us to do it.

[554] So he was like, oh, my God, Malley.

[555] Oh, gosh, oh, wow.

[556] But he was excited, but he was also like he couldn't believe we'd pulled off the prank.

[557] So he couldn't be mad because he'd given us permission.

[558] Yeah.

[559] And then he called Jolene ramped Anne's mom.

[560] and she broke out and cold sore.

[561] She was like, oh, my God.

[562] And then my dad said, listen, why don't you try to find a place to stay for the night?

[563] And Mary and I will drive.

[564] You're 11.

[565] You're like 11 and 12.

[566] What years is this, too?

[567] Like what kind of New York?

[568] Are you talking about 70s, 80s New York?

[569] Yeah, well, it's like 76.

[570] Yeah, this is taxi driver.

[571] This is right.

[572] This is taxi driver.

[573] This is a French connection.

[574] You're driving around.

[575] Yeah, this is the worst.

[576] Sid Vicious is in the hotel room next to you.

[577] Oh, this is in New York.

[587] So where did you stay that night?

[588] So we went and checked into a couple of nice hotels, like in the Times Square, area.

[589] And we would ask, you know, could we stay?

[590] And my dad would call the hotel and say, we're going to be there.

[591] We'll arrive like at midnight tonight.

[592] But of course, the hotel said, no, we can't be responsible for two minors.

[593] He goes, but they'll wait in the lobby.

[594] No, no, no, no. We need an adult in person with a credit card.

[595] So basically, we tried multiple hotels and they would not allow us.

[596] So then my dad said, well, you got to come back home.

[597] And he was like, and I'm not paying for it.

[598] So figure it out.

[599] Oh my God.

[600] Wow.

[601] So we had a full fun, crazy day in New York City and the best day ever.

[602] And then when it started to get dark, we headed back to the airport.

[603] And again, no cash.

[604] So we just sprinted over the turns out back to JFK, looked for flights to Cleveland.

[605] But now in New York City, these flights were much more crowded.

[606] So we got up to the gate of one, tried to get on a seat, but sneak on a seat.

[607] Same thing.

[608] Can we say goodbye to my sister?

[609] and then people kept coming up.

[610] I'm sorry, this is my seat.

[611] Is there some except that we moved to another seat?

[612] Excuse me, this is our seat.

[613] It was a fully pet flight.

[614] So we came back out, called my dad, and he was like, all right, I'll put it on my credit card, but you need to pay me back with your babysitting money.

[615] So we did lie home, and he picked us up, and we did celebrate, and then we did eventually pan back with all our babysitting money.

[616] What?

[617] Yeah.

[618] This is insanity.

[619] It's not funny.

[620] It was so fun.

[621] You know, I have to say it's funny because we live in this era.

[622] I mean, I contrast it with my childhood.

[623] And I had no experiences like that, but I was one of six.

[624] You know, my parents were busy.

[625] And I think there were a whole swaths of time where they weren't quite sure where I was.

[626] Yeah.

[627] Because that was the time.

[628] Now my wife knows where our kids are every second of every day.

[629] There's no such thing as like, oh, I don't, you know, in third grade, I was taking a, you know, waiting for a bus on Route 9.

[630] to take me home.

[631] But it was not thought of as crazy at the time.

[632] What you're describing is insane in any era.

[633] Maybe in the Middle Ages.

[634] You know, you could, I dare you to attack that castle in Scotland.

[635] I'm 11.

[636] Go ahead.

[637] But we live in the south of England.

[638] Go see if you can do it.

[639] Oh, my God.

[640] I love that.

[641] Yeah.

[642] But I mean, because this leads to the next thing I wanted to talk about, which is in your comedy and your performance and, and particularly in Mary Catherine Gallagher, the physicality of it was what really made it special.

[643] Do you know what I mean?

[644] And it doesn't, if you submitted a Mary Catherine Gallagher in a script, you wouldn't understand.

[645] You have to see you become that person and then hurl yourself into iron folding chairs.

[646] It's so funny because there was no faking it.

[647] You would, am I right?

[648] I mean, it looked like you were getting hurt all those years you were playing her.

[649] I like the way it felt kind of because it made me feel like, I think I was in a reckless place in my life where I didn't care.

[650] I was just like, ah, I liked bleeding and getting cut and bruised and, you know, I kind of thought of it like punk rock.

[651] Like it was a way to express anger and it felt good that it was really physical.

[652] And I didn't care.

[653] I just didn't care.

[654] I would never do that now.

[655] I was in a different place in my life where I didn't mind bleeding and being cut and getting bruised.

[656] And, you know, it was like very reckless.

[657] And it has to do with losing my mom and anger.

[658] And I was expressing myself.

[659] Does that make sense?

[660] It does.

[661] Yeah.

[662] It totally makes sense that it is a release.

[663] Yeah, release.

[664] They're breakaway walls, but what people don't understand is it still hurts.

[665] Yes.

[666] Like if you, you know, the times that you would go through a wall, and then rise up, you know?

[667] Superstar, you know.

[668] But that hurts, you know, and I've done it enough to know that that hurts and you were doing it at three times the velocity.

[669] That's so amazing.

[670] Brian Smy, they eventually got like a stunt guy because when I would first do it, I, yeah, I would just throw myself with the metal chairs and stuff.

[671] And then S &L hired a stuntman and Brian Smoj.

[672] And they would, they were like, She's fucking out of a mind.

[673] Oh, my God.

[674] Yeah.

[675] And then it set a barometer for other stunt women where they would have to copy that.

[676] They go, we want that and more.

[677] So it was like, they thought it was crazy.

[678] They were hated by stunt people.

[679] Yeah, yeah.

[680] They thought it was crazy.

[681] But I would never do that kind of thing now.

[682] But what I want to say, too, is it just, it also felt good to wake up Sunday morning.

[683] I like my muscles hurt.

[684] It made me feel like I worked really hard and I feel like I poured myself into the characters.

[685] So it just felt good.

[686] So there was also not just a dark side to it.

[687] No, no, no, no. But it's also what I mean, what also I have to say it's very Catholic too.

[688] There's a no good can come without some pain and some suffering.

[689] That's instilled in us pretty much at birth.

[690] And so the years I was at Saturday Night Live, I used to try and see, okay, most people stay up two nights.

[691] I'd try and stay up like three nights.

[692] I mean, literally to the point where like I'm crying and a weird gel is coming out of my eyes.

[693] because they're melting, you know, and there's this perverse, I hate to say, it's not sexual, it's not like an S &M kind of thing, but it's a weird, I'm hurting myself from my craft.

[694] Isn't that good?

[695] And I totally agree with you now, the idea of having to go to a physical therapist the next day and work on this for six weeks.

[696] I don't want to do that, no. I know.

[697] And it's so funny, Conan, because now I'm very different.

[698] Like, if I do have to do a stunt, I actually just did a movie.

[699] with Florence Pugh and we had a very physical scene and I wanted to have padding because it was really rough.

[700] I don't want to bust my rib anymore.

[701] It's not worth it.

[702] We're parents and, you know, so now I would never do that kind of stuff.

[703] And I'm so glad I didn't have a serious injury, thank God, because, you know, I could have broken my neck or back or like you're saying, a hip or something like that.

[704] Yeah.

[705] I was reading in the book and there's this part where you you took Mary Catherine Gallagher very seriously and you wrote down different rules for her which were important for you and your approach was almost quite method and quite serious like you went at it is these are the rules for Mary Catherine Gallagher she's terrified she's afraid she's so shy shy shy she starts off shy and I also wrote too that the audience must know what she wants it has to be crystal clear she wants this She wants to get this part, and it has to be life or death stakes.

[706] So it makes that release, like, blast off.

[707] You know what I mean?

[708] Yes.

[709] And then one thing I wanted to say, too, I feel like Hollywood loves an extrovert.

[710] It's like, oh, an extrovert.

[711] Yay.

[712] But I feel like I love introverts.

[713] I love when people are quiet and awkward, and I like when they don't know what to say, or I like when mistakes are made.

[714] I think it's so funny and sweet.

[715] I know that, you know, we're here talking about the book, but you also did this TV show.

[716] I love that for you, which, oh, yeah.

[717] I just finished it last night.

[718] I wrapped.

[719] Yeah, you just wrapped it.

[720] And it's coming out.

[721] And I wanted, I was really curious because I love your work.

[722] And I watched this two episodes of this show they sent me. Yeah.

[723] I mean, I swear to God, I think they edited it an hour beforehand and sent it to me. But this is a show that couldn't have existed 20 years ago because there's such small moments that are so great.

[724] Yeah.

[725] I'm doing that show with Vanessa Bayer, who's also from Cleveland, Ohio.

[726] And she's so funny.

[727] She's so funny and so great.

[728] And Jesse Klein and Jeremy Biler and Mike's show, Walter.

[729] You know, one of the things you talk about in the book that blew me away, which I did not see coming and I did not know.

[730] There was a Saturday Night Live, Mother's Day special.

[731] Yes.

[732] And I did remember at the time that all the different cast members brought their mom on, obviously you couldn't do that.

[733] So you brought your dad.

[734] And then there was some revelations afterwards.

[735] Yes.

[736] Well, my dad was, he always kind of wanted to be an actor himself.

[737] He would have loved to have pursued a career in show business professionally and taken acting classes at the Cleveland Playhouse.

[738] And he did his own writing after the accident to help with the grief about losing his wife and his baby daughter and niece.

[739] So he wrote a lot about how sad he was.

[740] and also the good memories.

[741] And I put that in the book too because I loved his writing and he really loved performing and we would do scenes around the house a lot like acting exercises and I'll get to Saturday Night.

[742] But I became interested in acting because of my dad.

[743] So he would have us do like skits in the house where he'd go, okay, pretend that somebody calls on the phone and you have to trick your friend so they think somebody's really calling.

[744] And we would practice and it had to be very real.

[745] And if it wasn't real, he'd be like, stop, that seemed fake.

[746] So I started with the Jim Shannon School of Act.

[747] So we would be like, hello, Shannon residents.

[748] This is Molly speaking.

[749] Uh -huh.

[750] Yeah, he's right here.

[751] Yeah.

[752] Uh -huh.

[753] Okay.

[754] And then we, so he would really, we would trick our friends so much because the acting was so real.

[755] So that comes from my dad.

[756] But what I wanted to say was, so when I brought him to SNL for their Mother's Day special, it was like making a man's dreams come true.

[757] Of course.

[758] Yeah.

[759] He wanted to be an actor.

[760] But what was so sad was when he came to visit, he did confide in me. He was shivering in the dressing room and Kay Farrell put a sweater on him.

[761] And he was acting a little weird.

[762] Like he seemed so thin and a little shaky.

[763] And he wasn't, you know, he didn't seem, he seemed thinner, like not fully his full energy.

[764] But it was like, I finally got him on SNL.

[765] This is what he wanted his dream.

[766] But he was dying of cancer.

[767] He told me during that trip, we were up there.

[768] Oh, my God.

[769] And he was like, I do have cancer.

[770] And, you know, I do, you know, have a little bit of a death wish.

[771] You know, he just didn't want to go through all the chemo and all that.

[772] He didn't want to do that.

[773] So it was, it was hard having him on there.

[774] No, it was great having him.

[775] But he didn't look his best because he looked kind of thin.

[776] And he also wasn't telling me he had cancer.

[777] So when we filmed our bit, I was like, Daddy, he felt like, he was like a little slow.

[778] It's like, speed it up.

[779] You know, come on, come on.

[780] And.

[781] You know, but he was having fun, too, because he got to, we got to go through hair and makeup, and he got to, he goes, boy, people don't know what goes into this.

[782] This is hard.

[783] I was like, exactly.

[784] So he really got to have the great experience.

[785] But when it did air, he was like, oh, I hated the way I looked.

[786] And he called me. I was in Canada shooting.

[787] I wish you could have told him that's all of us.

[788] Yeah, I did.

[789] Cancer or no cancer.

[790] Anything I do, if I accidentally see it on a screen, I'm horrified.

[791] Horrified.

[792] I told him.

[793] I said, Daddy, we all feel that way every performer.

[794] Or I thought you told him Conan hates the way he looks.

[795] And he has a right.

[796] My dad loved you, Conan.

[797] You and Adam were so nice to him, and I remember he was so excited that he got to see that life through me, like come to parties and meet Conan O 'Brien and Adam Sandler.

[798] I mean, it was like I made his dreams come true, you know?

[799] And I still often ask myself, like, do I really still like this or did I just do this for my dad?

[800] Because I am a quiet person, like, I don't care if somebody who doesn't know what I do or I don't, I don't need that to esteem myself.

[801] I am more serious.

[802] So I do think, I think about that a lot.

[803] Like, do I want to make sure I still like it.

[804] I don't want to just be phoning it in or, you know, if I ever felt like it wasn't right.

[805] I think that the business can be so hard because you can always feel like you're not measuring up or it's never enough.

[806] It's like it's so fucking exhausting.

[807] I just don't like those kind of childhood patterns where you have to keep going to like not feeling like enough.

[808] It's so old.

[809] I don't like it.

[810] Those games are useful for a while.

[811] There's this, you know, this repetitious thought and cycles and putting yourself down and trying to build yourself back up again.

[812] Yeah.

[813] But you can do that.

[814] You can go through those cycles for a long time and these negative thought patterns.

[815] And then what happens is you just get older.

[816] You have kids.

[817] And then you start to realize as they're growing up, oh, this is so much more important.

[818] Yes.

[819] This bullshit I've been completely worrying about all the time.

[820] How's the show?

[821] How's the show doing?

[822] What could be better?

[823] How could I have done that better?

[824] Kids really help.

[825] They help me a lot.

[826] They really do.

[827] It's so true.

[828] I feel like my whole life changed having kids and it becomes about them, of course.

[829] So it's like, it just seems so self -involved to even think about that.

[830] I'm like, this is their time.

[831] I'm like, this is their time.

[832] They don't mind.

[833] They understand showbiz and stuff.

[834] But, right, obviously it gets to where you want, and it's good to have that drive.

[835] But after a while, you're right, it does get old, and I like to feel like, ah, I measure up.

[836] I just don't want to have that map anymore of, like, not feeling like you don't measure up and you're not enough.

[837] I don't want to be doing that when I'm like now and 60 and 70.

[838] It's just, it's exhausting.

[839] Did you get a lot of help getting to that place?

[840] I did, yes.

[841] I've worked hard in therapy on myself.

[842] That's good.

[843] I talk about, I try and encourage people to get help.

[844] because it doesn't go, you can't do it on your own.

[845] You actually need another person in the room.

[846] Some people need medication, you know, you like, you need a little bit of help.

[847] Yeah.

[848] And it's like anything else.

[849] It's like if you want a six -pack, which thank God I don't, you have to do a lot of crunches and repetition.

[850] I don't know which kind of six -pack you were.

[851] I know.

[852] I really want a six -pack.

[853] Anyway, it's all through repetition.

[854] And going at it again and again and again.

[855] And I think that's one of the things that just makes your life better.

[856] Yeah.

[857] I feel like happier and better.

[858] I was never, I think there are some people where they have that flight response where things get too deep in therapy and then they flee because they can't deal with it.

[859] And then they're leaving at a point where they're like walking out.

[860] They're angry or whatever in the world.

[861] But I always, I always wanted to confront stuff.

[862] I like it because I felt like it just made me happier and calmer.

[863] And so I've always been open to doing that kind of work and it just has made my life better.

[864] Yeah, you left SNL and you talk about it in the book, you had encountered people who said, oh, this is going to be great.

[865] You know, SNL's a great stepping stone.

[866] And your reaction was, what are you talking about?

[867] Yeah, a stepping stone.

[868] I was like, what, this is everything.

[869] I could just stop right here.

[870] I could freeze myself.

[871] Like, this is just, I can't believe I even came this far.

[872] I never even dreamed it could be like this.

[873] I could just freeze and that would be enough.

[874] And that's truly how I feel.

[875] But that is unusual because most people, it's very human, but most people, when you get one thing, you immediately make it the very least you should have.

[876] This is something humans just do.

[877] It becomes like, this is the very least I should have.

[878] And I see this in show business all the time.

[879] People go from, oh, my God, I can't believe I'm, this is even happening to me. And within three months, they're saying, I've got this.

[880] Yeah.

[881] How do I get that?

[882] And if I don't get that, I kind of failed.

[883] Yeah.

[884] And the thing is, if you feel inadequate working more is not going to fix that.

[885] You know what I mean?

[886] Like, I always try to think that.

[887] Like, I don't, do you know what I mean?

[888] Yes.

[889] I mean, sometimes if it's bringing you joy, great.

[890] But I think a lot of times people are like, I got a, you know, they're competing with something and they're, and they're, but you may be competing with somebody who has a serious work addiction.

[891] So like, look at it as that, you know, don't.

[892] Mike White says this great thing where he was like, my mom always wins by being the happiest.

[893] And I was like, that's amazing.

[894] because for some people it can be to the point where it's not about, you know, money.

[895] It's about, like, power.

[896] And you know what I mean?

[897] It just can get really unhealthy.

[898] And I love being creative, but I also want to be happy.

[899] I don't want to do it at the expense of my children and being present for them.

[900] And I think because I lost my mom as a kid, I feel really wanting to grab this time now.

[901] I have an urgency about it knowing that you never know how long you have with somebody.

[902] So I really realized, oh my God, you're up to bat, you know, because I lost her so young that I want to do a really good job as a mom.

[903] That's like my number one thing.

[904] Does that make sense?

[905] Yes.

[906] And so I don't want to miss out on that, you know?

[907] Of course.

[908] Yeah.

[909] And I just think, I think because I struggled so long to make it that I really appreciate it.

[910] You know what I mean?

[911] And I think the same with SNL.

[912] I was always like, I could just stop right here.

[913] I knew what that type of gig was, how special it was and it's live.

[914] And I do think Lorne knew that about me. I was just like, oh my God, this is the greatest ever.

[915] nothing may ever top this live performance experience.

[916] And that's true.

[917] It's just spectacular.

[918] There is nothing like that, you know?

[919] So I did know that when I was there and I appreciate it.

[920] Isn't it funny?

[921] And I think that, and we both saw this.

[922] We've seen it time and time again.

[923] But Lauren Michaels has kind of a fascination and real appreciation for Irish Catholics.

[924] He does.

[926] He really does.

[927] And I just keep thinking about all down the line, I think, because he grew up, you know, this Jewish kid in Toronto.

[928] He's just fascinated by like, who are these people?

[929] It's so true.

[930] They're crazy.

[933] But I think he's, he is amused by us.

[934] And thank God, because, you know, he's given us all these amazing lives.

[944] But because I know that you're saying, then you have this whole part where you're trying to get started in show business and you have a scam where you tell people that you work with David Mammoth.

[946] And it's just a lie, but it works.

[949] But my friend Gene Pack and I did study with him at NYU Drama School, Tish School of the Arts.

[950] I wasn't in his class for too long, but when we were trying, struggling actors, trying to get our faces seen out in Hollywood, it was so hard to get an agent you would send your head shut in and nobody would call.

[951] And so we were like, we got to like bust through somehow.

[952] So I thought of this and basically what we did was we would go to AFI Library and study managers and agents we wanted to pursue because there was a big book that said who Joan Cusack's represented by this person or that.

[953] So we would have a list of people we wanted to meet and then Friday night at about a Friday afternoon at about four we would each have a list where I had five people I wanted him to call and he had five people he wanted me to call for him agents and managers to get in and we would say yes can I speak to whatever ex agent.

[954] This is, you know, Liz Stockwell, that was my name, calling from David Mamet's office.

[955] And I would love for you to meet, you know, can you please put the agent on?

[956] They would be so excited.

[957] Oh, my God, David Mamet's office.

[958] And the reason maybe we chose him was because we knew he was on the East Coast, maybe in Vermont wasn't coming, wasn't in Hollywood.

[959] But then people were really delighted that maybe David Mamet was thinking of them.

[960] And they were like, right away, let us put you through to, you know.

[961] know, ex -agent.

[962] And then the agent would get on the phone and I would say, hi, whatever, Barb, you know, this is Listockwell.

[963] So we have this great kid in town.

[964] He's doing David's new show.

[965] We would make him the star of David's new play.

[966] And he's in town taking meetings and he's going to go back to New York because they're in rehearsals, but we would love to have you meet him.

[967] And they would say, you know, oh, sure, we'll have Jane call me when he gets a town.

[968] I was like, you know what, his schedule so busy if I could just set at the appointment now for him to meet you.

[969] and we couldn't hang up the phone until we had the appointment and so we had the appointment in the books and so whatever obstacle there was in the mammoth scam we had an answer because we had both worked in telemarketing so we were like if they say this we say this if they say don't hang up so you got that credit card you know make the sale so basically and I would say David just speaks so highly of your company and you would love to be represented by your company and they'd be oh my God yes let's get an appointment and then Jean would make calls for me saying he was Arnold Katz and we would and we would, right?

[970] And then we would, oh, God, we met everyone.

[971] Bernie Brilstein, we called Bernie, and he was like, you know, have Molly call my daughter Lee.

[972] And he was so nice.

[973] And, you know, so we met everyone.

[974] It worked.

[975] It worked.

[976] And that's how I got my first agent.

[977] Oh, my God.

[978] And Jean got, we got jobs, you know.

[979] But let me just put it out there.

[1008] There was a period of time when I was doing a stand -up tour.

[1009] And at the end, when my set was done, people would ask me questions.

[1010] And people, the question I get all the time is a whole.

[1011] okay, who's the worst guy?

[1012] And I'd say, well, I don't want to say.

[1013] And I go, come on, come on.

[1014] So I just started throwing out a name at random, and it was Willem DeFoe.

[1015] And people were like, gasp, and some people in the audience would be like, I knew it.

[1016] First of all, let me just make it very clear.

[1017] I've met Willem DeFoe and interviewed him a number of times.

[1018] One of the loveliest people you'll ever meet.

[1019] I can imagine.

[1020] But I just, it's one of those names where, who would lie about Willam Defoe?

[1021] No one.

[1022] You wouldn't lie about Willem DeFoe.

[1023] It's too interesting.

[1024] a name and too interesting a choice.

[1025] So I'd go Willem Defoe and people would in the audience would be like, oh, I always liked him.

[1046] But then when I came to terms of that and kind of allowed myself to be depressed for several months, I could enjoy just being creative and enjoy it.

[1048] Now I can really enjoy it if I make people happy.

[1049] But I had to go through a process of grieving my mom and realizing fame doesn't fix anything.
